Job Advert Summary
The Masters Research Internship in the HSRC is meant to provide successful candidates with an opportunity to further develop their research expertise by working with subject experts and project specialists. The research internship experience is intensive and seeks mature individuals who can work independently and in a team. While appointees will be exposed to a wide variety of project-related research, they will be expected to complete their Masters degree within 2 years. Time is set aside for this purpose.
 
Minimum Requirements

• Applicants must be in possession of a relevant Honours degree and be registered or about to register for a Masters degree in public health with a recognised South African or other university;
• A sound grounding in research methods will be a strong recommendation;
• Requisite computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office,)
• Working experience with some of the following data software packages: STATA, Epi Info, SPSS, Nvivo, AtlasTI or other relevant statistical packages;
• Ability to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines.

 
Duties & Responsibilities      
In addition to being registered for a Masters degree, at a recognized South African university and currently working on their degrees, or eligible for registration at a recognized South African university, research interns are required to participate in all aspects of the research process as they work with other staff on different research projects.
Among other duties, they will participate in the following activities under supervision:

• Collection and analysis of data;
• Management or supervision of research projects
• Participation in the conceptualization and execution of research projects;
• Participation in the formulation of research questions and writing proposals;
• Assisting with the submission of research proposals for ethical review;
• Writing up of research results, research reports, and manuscripts for publication;
• Presenting results of projects in different forums (webinars, conferences, seminars, and other forums);

The Africa Institute of South Africa in the HSRC wishes to appoint a suitable Research Director. AISA leads and coordinates the HSRC’s engagements in Africa. It, therefore, acts as a catalyst for research and implementation support across the continent.  AISA also undertakes basic, applied policy-relevant and comparative research. The Institute also seeks to build capacity and provide policy advice and implementation support to advance the HSRC’s own Africa Research Partnership and Collaboration Strategy as well as South Africa’s African Agenda, DSI’s Africa Strategy, SADC’s Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan 2020-2030 (RISDP), the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and the key frameworks of the United Nations (SDG’s, UNSCR 1325). It collaborates with a range of national, continental, and international governments, as well as multilateral institutions, research institutes, universities, and civil society organisations in order to achieve its objectives.

Minimum Requirements

• A Ph.D. degree in either the social sciences or humanities or a related field in a relevant subject pertinent to the study of Africa.
• An academic leader with a strong record of published research not less than 20 publications of which several must be international peer-reviewed journal articles
• Ten years of senior research leadership and people and business management experience of which 5 years should be on the Director or equivalent level, i.e., at the Associate professor or Professor level. 
• Fundraising and large-scale research project management.
• Good networking skills and experience in working with senior policymakers;
• Research interests and experience in working on the study of Africa;
• The versatility to apply qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies to challenging subject matter across disciplinary boundaries will be advantageous;
• Proficiency in or working experience with some of the following data software packages: STATA, Epi Info, SPSS, Nvivo, AtlasTI or other relevant statistical packages;
• A track record of experience in conducting large-scale comparative studies.
• Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination, and drive.
• The ability to lead multidisciplinary research teams.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead, and manage the research activities of AISA in the context of the HSRC’s mission and strategic goals;
• Develop research proposals that are in line with the programme’s research agenda. This may include working with other units within both AISA and HSRC as well as collaborate with external researchers both within South Africa, in the rest of the African continent and elsewhere throughout the world;
• Write and publish research reports and publish research findings in accredited peer-reviewed international and local journals;
• Lead policy-related research, analyse data, interpret and report research findings and recommendations in high-level forums;
• Co-ordinate communication about research activities with members of the programme, the research team, the clients, and other stakeholders;
• Develop contacts and interact with policymakers outside the HSRC;
• Support the development of spatial information, its analysis and dissemination;
• Oversee the meeting of project deadlines together with the relevant project managers;

PHSB is looking for a suitably qualified persons to take on project management responsibilities for a community-based research projects implemented in the Saldanha Bay Municipality, but based at the Cape Town office. The successful candidate will primarily manage a community based public health related research project.

The CCBR is looking for a suitably qualified person to take on the role of Pharmacy Assistant (Post Basic) who will work under the supervision of a Research Pharmacist to support clinic and community based research studies. The successful candidate will work in a clinical pharmacy according to South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC), South African  Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAPHRA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Good Clinical and Good Pharmacy Practice Guidelines (GCP and GPP). The Pharmacy Assistant will report to the Research Pharmacist and work closely with cross project units, project team and site support staff to successfully implement their role. Minimum Requirements

• Senior Certificate (Grade 12) and Pharmacist’s assistant (post-basic) certificate of qualification from a provider of education and training approved by the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)   
• Current registration with the South African Pharmacy Council as a Pharmacist Assistant Post Basic  
• Proof of registration with the SAPC as a Post Basic Pharmacy Assistant
• A valid driver’s license.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Comply with the scope of practice of a Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant.
• Prepare, compound, pack / prepack / repack, label all prescriptions
• Stock management – ordering, receipt, issue / distribution, control, maintaining stock levels, record-keeping and storage (including daily temperature checks) of pharmaceuticals and non-pharmaceuticals, expiry checks, stock rotation, stock-take, security, stock management and maintaining stock levels in various sections in the Pharmacy.

• Manufacture / compounding of sterile and non-sterile pharmaceutical products,
• Collection and recording of statistics and information. Assist in the compilation of reports.

• Counselling clients on medicine use and health education, provision of basic primary health education.
• Ensure compliance with Good Pharmacy Practice and norms and standards, Waste Management, Occupational Health and Safety compliance, Infection Prevention and Control.
