Innovation Catalyst for Gauteng City Region
The Innovation Hub Management Company (SOC) Ltd (“TIHMC”), a subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (SOC) Ltd (a multi-billion Rand initiative by the Gauteng Provincial Government for investing in strategic economic infrastructure so as to unlock economic growth in Gauteng). The Innovation Hub is a leading Science and Technology Park in Africa and a provincial innovation agency, established to spur the growth of smart industries in Gauteng to drive the Transformation, Modernisation and Reindustrialisation of the Gauteng economy.
It is now offering the following opportunity to a competent and dedicated person to join a dynamic team in Pretoria East:
GENERAL MANAGER: COMMERCIAL OPERATIONS
(5 Year Fixed Term Contract)
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the successful person will be responsible for providing strategic direction and effective management of The Innovation Hub’s commercial operations which include (i) all aspects of real estate relating to the science park and in particular, business development relating to attracting appropriate anchor companies to take up land parcels in the science park (ii) oversight of facilities management (tenant recruitment and relationships, lease management), Occupational Health and Safety (OHASA), cleaning and gardening services, security), auxiliary services (security, gardening and cleaning), management of contractors, (iii) management of the Property Owners Association (POA) and related aspects, building related issues, (iv) business development directed at new sources of revenue, revenue growth and implementation of customer centric service delivery approaches to optimise revenue generation.
In addition, the successful candidate’s responsibilities include: • Identifying, liaising and building strategic relationships with potential anchor companies / stakeholders for purposes of increasing land development at The Innovation Hub Science Park in Pretoria in support of, and aligned to the cluster development approach, with a focus on technology and innovation companies aligned to The Innovation Hub’s priority sectors • Working with the Department of Economic Development / Gauteng Growth and Development Agency on infrastructure development, including business development, development of tender specifications and related documentation, PPP proposals, project execution and delivery thereof • Business development aspects in respect of future developments as well as liaison with developers, relevant authorities, contractual arrangements • Developing customer centric service delivery approaches associated with execution of a Science Parks Value Added Services • Ensuring space and infrastructure optimisation • Developing and implementing innovative approaches, to optimise revenue recoveries while reducing operating costs in order to maximise surplus • Developing and maintaining strategic partnerships in support of The Innovation Hub mandate and strategic direction, including sourcing anchor tenants for the Science Park • Oversight of the ICT services in all facilities in the precinct • Preparing and presenting reports and updates (including board papers, statutory reports) • Providing leadership and ensure effective management of the resources (e.g. human capital and talent, mentors, and service providers), including implementing the performance management system;
Candidates need to be in possession of a relevant business degree, preferably a postgraduate qualification such as an MBA, at least 10 years relevant experience and good track record in sales and business development, either in a technology sector or infrastructure development; at least 5 years in an executive related position; demonstrated ability to optimise and grow revenue sources; strong and energetic leader, networker and team player; excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to establish rapport and credibility with internal and external stakeholders; proven experience in managing stakeholders often with different and diverging interests; ability to negotiate, facilitate and make sound business decisions
GENERAL MANAGER: SMART INDUSTRIES
(5 Year Fixed Term Contract)
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the successful person will be responsible for providing strategic direction and effective management of the Smart Industries Division (Tech and Advanced Manufacturing) and its initiatives, which include but not limited to, Maxum Smart, Digital and Media incubation programmes, business acceleration, entrepreneurship skills development, government and Smart Industries industry partnerships in support of The Innovation Hub mandate and strategic goals.
The successful candidate’s responsibilities include:
• Provide leadership and management capability to the establishment of a Smart Industries cluster based on demand led innovation • Manage start-up initiatives together with other executives responsible for Green Economy and Bioeconomy sectors • Develop and implement a strategic framework for growth of tech entrepreneurs and skills to position Gauteng as a tech hub and a player in the 4th industrial revolution • Develop and implement end-to-end incubation support to accelerate the impact of tech startup companies in support of industry and government demand for innovation and solutions • Establish and effectively manage relationships with ICT industry and the public sector to unlock market access for incubated entrepreneurs • Establish linkages to government (local, provincial and national) priorities to ensure public procurement / piloting of innovations that address service delivery and improve public sector efficiency • Identify and secure alternative forms of funding in particular leverage corporate enterprise development financing for implementation of incubation programs • Develop and maintain strategic local and international partnerships / relationships to enhance The Innovation Hub’s positioning and standing within the National System of Innovation • Prepare and present reports and updates (including board papers, statutory reports, etc.) • Provide leadership and ensure effective management of the resources (e.g. human capital and talent, mentors, and service providers) to effect the expected outcomes, including implementing the performance management system • Optimise the scope of Enterprise Development including understanding the tech value chains, engaging with decision makers in those private/public companies to unlock market access opportunities • Provide thought leadership for the smart industries, nationally and in the continent;
To qualify for this challenging position, candidates need to be in possession of a relevant qualifications and experience, preferably with a graduate degree in technology and business management supported by 8 – 10 years’ experience in a tech industry (at least 4 years of which have been in a senior management role), coupled with commercialisation of innovations or managing start-ups or technology development; and knowledge of technology development enterprise development services; Strong strategic, business and entrepreneurial acumen; strong and energetic leader, networker and team player; good knowledge of SA’s innovation eco-system; experience in managing stakeholders often with different and diverging interests, financial and human resources; Excellent communication (verbal and written), presentation and report writing skills; ability to negotiate, facilitate and make sound business decisions. Knowledge of PFMA and other relevant legislation will be an advantage.
BUILDING AND FACILITIES MANAGER
Reporting to the General Manager: Commercial Operations, the successful candidate has the following responsibilities: • Day to day facilities management of all aspects of the real estate, including maintenance, management of various contractors including but not limited to security services, HVAC, cleaning and gardening services, and ensuring compliance with various legislation, such as but not limited to OHASA, Public Finance Management Act • Assessing the condition of electrical, plumbing, air conditioning and other essential utilities in order to ensure that not only that such installations comply with regulations but also ensure their maintenance to support the effective and efficient functions of the organisation • Maintenance management of all building operations including electrical, general building structure, wet services, fires and disasters to ensure regulatory compliance, sustainable building, financial sustainability and asset value growth and ensuring necessary backups such as electricity and generators are working to address any downtime • Ensuring statutory compliance for the safety of the building from fire, floods and other hazards including ensuring that all equipment and facilities are operating smoothly • Disaster management and business continuity • Initiation and direction of occupational health and safety programmes and activities to ensure the safety of all persons using the building over and above regulatory compliance • Management of building security and coordination of Property Owners Association precinct management • Responsibility and supervision for all facilities on site contractors including but not limited to cleaning contractors, garden services, air conditioning, electrical services and all contractors related to facilities • Responsibility and facilitation of all procurement related to facilities within operational and capital budgets. Ensure effective execution of building maintenance plan to reduce operational costs and ensure client satisfaction • Audit and supervise facilities related service providers to match The Innovation Hub requirements and manage service levels in line with service level agreements and ensure value for money for The Innovation Hub • Supervise and facilitate tender system in respect of facilities contractors • Management of electricity metering and liaising with finance on billing • Manage the technical facility aspects of all tenant installations in buildings in support of client satisfaction and retention • Manage both security and occupational health and safety • Manage the technical facility aspects of all staff office movements in the buildings; and aspects of all conference venues in the buildings • Prepare and present reports and updates (including board papers, statutory reports, etc.) • Liaison with infrastructure team on future buildings development;
To qualify for this challenging position, candidates need to be in possession of a relevant technical degree, minimum of five (5) years’ relevant experience in commercial property management /facilities management; technical knowledge of modern building management /office equipment, methods and systems and processes; basic understanding of architectural and engineering plans and technical knowledge of construction; building and facility maintenance and operations management knowledge; knowledge of property law, safety , environmental and building regulations and laws; project management experience; basic financial management skills, experienced in service level management for outsourced service providers and contractors in property management; excellent communication (verbal and written), presentation and report writing skills; ability to negotiate, facilitate and make sound business decisions. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ANALYST
Reporting to a Snr Manager and the General Manager: Smart Industries, the role is to provide support in intellectual property (IP) and contracts related issues directed at ensuring effective IP management and commercialisation of technology innovations by entrepreneurs.
The successful candidate has the following responsibilities: • Management of the process including undertaking searches and advising on strategies for IP protection and commercialisation for entrepreneurs within the incubation programmes • Develop and implement IP management workshops and training for entrepreneurs and The Innovation Hub precinct companies • Conduct various types of IP related searches on both propriety and non-propriety patent databases • Management of patent search tools • Conduct IP and legal due diligences and provide draft IP opinions • Evaluate applications submitted to the incubation programmes and participate in various organisational evaluation committees • Writing reports on the searches conducted from time to time, with view of these reports empowering entrepreneurs to make business decision • Conducting intellectual property due diligences and evaluate projects for feasibility and economic viability as well as potential to impact on Gauteng economy and participate in project evaluation meetings • Train entrepreneurs on patent search methods • Monitor and identify contemporary issues and approaches in intellectual property management relation to green economy and environment sustainability projects and innovations • Provide support to entrepreneurs in Intellectual Property Management
To qualify for this challenging position, candidates need to be in possession of a relevant graduate degree (Science or Engineering), completed or studying towards LLB; and preferably have completed all Group 1 of Patent Examination Board curriculum, plus 3 years technical and intellectual property management experiences; experience in project management of technology innovation projects or as a researcher. Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, presentation and report writing skills; ability to work with concepts and entrepreneurs; and be a team player.
EKASILABS PROGRAMME MANAGERS
(x3) (Kathorus; Boipatong, Kagiso)
Reporting to TIHMC’s Senior Manager in the Office of the CEO, the main objective of this position is to manage and coordinate the successful delivery of business support services to start-up companies in eKasiLabs as well as engaging communities on innovation.
The successful candidates have the following responsibilities: • Establish and manage co-creation and incubation centre in a specific township • Establish and manage entrepreneurship support programmes • Recruit youth into the programmes, with particular emphasis on entrepreneurs through outreach for idea sourcing • Engage potential partners for community based development • Support entrepreneurs in the townships to develop and commercialise their innovations (including planning and running Start-up Weekends, Hackathons and boot camps in the townships) • Manage and implement awareness campaigns to further the objectives of entrepreneurial development, with particular emphasis on the Gauteng City Region corridor approach • Initiate and implement local competitions to identify talent amongst township youth • Work with municipality’s Local Economic development programmes in alignment to Transformation, Modernisation and Reindustrialisation (TMR) • In conjunction with Commercialisation Specialists, support entrepreneurs in commercialisation of their innovations / technologies • Participate in events, conferences and on-going developments to stay current with new trends in technology and innovation space to facilitate benchmarking of eKasiLabs Programme
Candidates need to be in possession of relevant business, science or technology degree; demonstrated relevant experience in entrepreneurship and working with start-ups, proven exposure to ICT and/or manufacturing; understanding of innovation ecosystems and passion for innovation and local economic development; must be a self-starter, passionate about enterprise development, entrepreneurial edge, sound administrative and planning skills, demonstrate sound customer relations, good organisational development skills, excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, presentation and report writing skills; ability to work with concepts and entrepreneurs; and be a team player.
