POSITION: Senior Production Geologist     
JOB GRADING: D-Lower       
DEPARTMENT: Technical Services            
SITE: South Deep Gold Mine
 
The Senior Production Geologist is accountable for delivering on-mine production geology function support including the design, execution and monitoring of the South Deep integrated operational geology strategy and programme incorporating Exploration and Production Geology.  Drawing off an established mine geology track record, the incumbent is responsible for the technical evaluation and optimisation of existing and new geological methodologies, techniques, and technologies to drive efficient operational delivery of mapping, drilling, sampling, logging, grade control and ore flow reconciliation as well as all associated QA/QC functions.   As a Senior Production Geologist, the successful incumbent assumes responsibility for embedding a values-based culture of safety, productivity, and respectful engagement in all aspects of operational delivery.
 
Minimum Requirements
  • Postgraduate qualification in Geosciences or Mineral Resource Management Discipline e.g. BSc (Hons) Geology, BSc (Hons) Geosciences etc.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in operational Geology / Mineral Resources Management
  • Proven track record in mine production geology, underground mapping, geological modelling, orebody evaluation, sampling/assaying and mine-to-mill reconciliation
  • Established QA/QC capability across the geology value-chain
  • Proven proficiency in applying relevant geological modelling software (Datamine/Leapfrog etc.).
  • Experience in developing and maintaining spatial geological and structural models
  • Proven track record in participating and leading project(s) and/ or operational reviews
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a systematic, knowledge-based problem-solving and structured methodologies to investigate risks and opportunities that will lead to effective, value-add technical solutions and process optimisation
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment
 
Key Competencies:
  • Advanced operational safety leadership experience with demonstrated safety delivery record
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and working with diverse teams and achieving sustained high performance.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Understanding of mining geology Mineral Resource development as well as Research and Development
  • Knowledge of best practice across the different processes withing the geology function
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Participate in and contribute towards the formulation and execution of the mine’s various safety, health, environment and risk management campaigns
  • Lead work teams in the execution of all technical programmes, including mapping, sampling, drilling, grade control, and reconciliation processes
  • Embed and maintain standardized geological practices for mine geology, geological modelling, exploration drilling, ore sampling/assaying and mine-to-mill reconciliation
  • Continuously evaluate and optimise resource delineation and grade control programmes and, implement remediation interventions as required
  • Maintain up to date spatial geological data such as structural block models while maintaining systems to optimise exploration delivery, diamond drilling, resource modelling and estimation
  • Improve awareness of and input into technical risk evaluation at site for geosciences and development of processes and action plans to mitigate such risks
  • Ensure that geoscientific data and documents are appropriately managed throughout the geology value chain and that the most updated and complete version is stored in the appropriate storage location
  • Participate / lead regular and ad hoc short, medium and long-term operational planning and scheduling sessions with a focus on actively identifying and collaboratively solving operational delivery challenges
  • Lead the coordination of geological support to the Mining and Metallurgy departments while ensuring optimal data-driven analysis to enable detailed mine planning, scheduling and ore characterization and extraction
  • Contribute towards compilation and publication of Annual Resource Statement in ensuring alignment with relevant mineral reporting codes and standards such as SAMREC, JORC, ROPOs, etc
  • Conduct appropriate research on emerging geological leading practice to identify potential methodologies, techniques and technologies to optimise application, improve efficiency and geological confidence at South Deep
  • Effective contract management resulting in excellent safety and planned productivities

POSITION: Trackless Diesel Mechanic
JOB GRADING: C-Lower
DEPARTMENT: Engineering

The Trackless Diesel Mechanic will be responsible for the Refurbishment/Assembling/Commissioning of Equipment and maintain Reliability on the Equipment until hander over to the Relevant Section for production.  The role requires safe task execution in respect of Changing of Major Components, troubleshooting breakdowns, performing preventative maintenance, and repairing faults.  Team members are expected to demonstrate a focus on safety, achievement, and team engagement in all aspects of their work
 
Minimum Requirements:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Recognized Diesel Mechanic/Millwright/Fitter Trade Certificate
  • Have 5 years’ experience in a mechanized mining environment as a Diesel Mechanic/Millwright/Fitter
  • Proven working knowledge of Trackless Machines. Sandvik/Epiroc/Aard/Caterpillar
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment
 
Key Competencies:
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Be able to interpret hydraulic drawings and use with fault-finding
  • Extensive experience on Trackless Equipment/Component
  • Proven track record of production achievements
  • Prepared to work overtime/irregular hours and perform standby duties as required
  • Computer literacy with basic MS Office proficiency
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure health and safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedure
  • Perform inspections in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act regulations, manufacturing, and Company standards
  • Responsible for the maintenance of applicable standards and conditions within assigned areas of responsibility
  • Responsible for the safe and proper installation and repairs of equipment aligned to scheduled planned refurbishments and maintenance, breakdown management and ad hoc assignments
  • Accountable for the complete delivery of daily task assignments and, reporting of outstanding or work to be scheduled in accordance with established preventative and breakdown maintenance standards
  • Carry out RCA to eliminate repeat failures and implement remedial actions
  • Collaborate with operational teams to ensure preparation and release of units for planned breakdown and ad hoc maintenance tasks
  • Collaborate with team and planned maintenance teams to ensure optimal preparation, spares, etc. ahead of tasks being assigned and executed
  • Engage in further training and related activities to ensure continuous refinement of own skills and competencies

The Trackless Crew Leader is accountable for executing the safe and efficient delivery of assigned monthly production plan, leading operational teams to achieve prescribed safely goals and ensuring quality delivery according to operational standards.
 
Minimum Requirements:
  • Matriculated or Equivalent with a recognized Blasting Certificate
  • At least 5 years’ production experience in a deep level trackless mine with relevant TM3 equipment/machinery certificates
  • Sound working knowledge of relevant Mine Health & Safety legislation
  • Secure full Gold Fields Security and Related Occupational Screening
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance

The forklift operator is responsible for the safe and effective transport of material cars to and from the shaft in accordance with standard operating procedures.
 
Minimum Requirements:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Forklift driver license
  • Valid driver license
  • At least 2 years’ experience as Forklift operator in a mining environment
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment
 
Key Competencies:
  • Established personal safety delivery record
  • Strong inter and intra-team collaboration skills 
  • Sound spoken and written English communication skills
  • Completion of a machine appreciation awareness programme (O4R/M4R or equivalent)

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintains Safety, Health and Environmental practices according to standards and procedures
  • Does a pre-use inspection on this equipment by means of a checklist and report deficiencies to supervisor
  • Performs basic maintenance on equipment e.g. top up engine oil, water and hydraulic oil, check for oil leaks and clean equipment according to standards and procedures
  • Performs end of shift procedures according to standards and procedures e.g., parks the forklift at the designated area, cleans equipment and reports to supervisor
  • Performs any other activities necessary for the effective completion of his/her work
  • Operates the forklift to safely transport material cars to and from the Shaft in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Assessing weight of loads to be lifted
  • Adhering to Surface Traffic Management plan as set out by the mine standard
  • Safe operation of a Forklift
