DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

LECTURER: CIVIL ENGINEERING (P-08) PERMANENT

Key Performance Areas:

· Teach and assess students at Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels for the subjects/modules in the discipline of Water Engineering and Engineering Drawing within the department of Civil Engineering.

· Ability to teach at all levels (Diploma and Advanced Diploma) and supervise research projects.

· Coordinate all student programmes within the department as per required standard operating requirements.

· Develop and improve on the curriculum content of the teaching materials and also the student module guide (SMG) for the subject/modules taught in line with industry trends and HEQSF requirements.

· Participate in departmental activities as required, including research, continuous professional development, Community engagement, partnerships, and collaboration strengthening.

· Contribute towards Faculty and Departmental research initiates.

· Contribute to Academic citizenship and provide Faculty and University service.

· Assist with Academic administration and Quality Assurance initiatives.

· Liaise with industry including consultation work / collaborative research and other community service projects / engagements;

· Participate in the continuous development and improvement of tools for effective assessment of Graduate Attributes as stipulated in the ECSA Qualification Standards of the Programmes running in the department.

· Performing and carrying delegated administrative duties of the department

 

Minimum requirements

Qualifications:

· A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering majoring in Water Engineering and Engineering Drawing.

· Professional registration with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is an added advantage.

Experience:

· Minimum of 2 years lecturing experience in an institution of higher learning or industry experience

· Evidence of research publication/conference presentations will be an added advantage.

 

Skills and Competencies Required:

· Demonstrated abilities to teach undergraduate students.

· Problem Based Learning (PBL) Teaching skill.

· Ability to mentor and guide students in their academic and career development, providing feedback and support for research projects.

· Commitment to ongoing research, staying updated with advancements, and incorporating relevant findings into teaching.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Deliver high-quality tuition across various modules within the Department of Built Environment, specifically within the Diploma in Building Technology, Advanced Diploma in Construction Management, and Advanced Diploma in Quantity Surveying programmes.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to rotate and offer tuition in any module offered by the department, based on qualifications and departmental needs.
  • Coordinate student programmes and related activities in accordance with the university's standard operating procedures and quality requirements.
  • Develop, review, and improve curriculum content, teaching materials, and Student Module Guides (SMGs) to ensure alignment with current industry trends and Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF) requirements.
  • Prepare, regularly update curricula and course material for lecturers in accordance with SAQA, CHE, and DHET requirements and maintain quality assurance.

Minimum requirements

Qualification:

  • MSc/MTech in Construction Management or Quantity Surveying (NQF Level 9)
  • BSc Honours in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management.
  • National Diploma in Building/Construction Studies, or an Advanced Diploma in Quantity Surveying or Construction Management.
  • Registered with either the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP) or the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP), or be willing to register within a reasonable period.

Experience:

  • A minimum of two years teaching experience in a tertiary institution, OR
  • A minimum of two years industry/site experience on construction projects.

 

Skills and Competencies:

  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced computer literacy, including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Knowledge of industry-specific software such as WinsQS, QS Plus, MS Projects, or CCS Candy will be a strong advantage.
  • Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively with students, academic colleagues, and industry professionals to foster a collaborative and engaging learning environment.

DEPARTMENT OF BUILT ENVIRONMENT

 LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

PERMANENT(P10)

REF NO: WSU-BCC-FEBEIT 04/2026/01 

The main purpose of this position is to ensure that practical’s offered to students conform to the highest quality standards and support the teaching, research and community engagement objectives of the Department. The incumbent will be responsible for the Soils, Concrete, and Surveying Laboratories, servicing the Diploma in Building and Advanced Diploma in Construction Management and Advanced Diploma in Quantity Surveying.

 

Key performance areas: 

INSTRUMENT AND EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT

  • Handle, store and maintain all soil, concrete, and surveying equipment in the laboratory.
  • Conduct weekly inventories and order materials/consumables (cement, aggregates, sand) in time for scheduled practicals.
  • Report breakages immediately; arrange for the repair and calibration of compression machines, sieve shakers, and surveying levels/theodolites.
  • Commission new equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

TECHNICAL PRACTICALS: SOILS, CONCRETE & CONSTRUCTION

  • Site Surveying: Conduct practicals on levelling, theodolite traversing, and total station setup.
  • Soil Mechanics: Prepare samples for foundation purposes; conduct Atterberg Limits, sieve analyses, and CBR tests.
  • Concrete Technology: Demonstrate slump tests, concrete cube casting, curing, and compression/tension testing.
  • Masonry: Instruct students on mixing mortar, laying bricks in various bonds (Stretcher, English, Flemish), and testing the strength of mortars.
  • Ensure all practical manuals are updated to reflect current construction technology and industry standards.

HEALTH & SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT

  • Act as the first responder for the laboratory; administer first aid and maintain the first aid kit.
  • Enforce strict compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) .
  • Conduct risk assessments; identify hazards (dust, heavy machinery, wet concrete) and implement immediate mitigations.
  • Maintain a legal compliance safety file for the lab.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT & ADMINISTRATION

  • Prepare laboratory manuals and project sheets for Building Technology Diploma and Advanced Diploma students.
  • Keep accurate records of student attendance, practical work completed, and assessment results.
  • Liaise with Lecturers to align practical work with theoretical curricula.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Demonstrate a spirit of being trainable and a willingness to further your studies.
  • Register with relevant professional bodies (SACICMP, SAICE, IAIASA) where appropriate.

 

Minimum requirements

Qualification

  • National Diploma in Building, Civil Engineering with a focus on Construction Materials/Structures.
  • Advanced Diploma/B-Tech in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Built Environment or Civil Engineering will be an added advantage.
  • Trade Test Certification (Bricklaying/Plastering/Concrete) or Surveying Certification will also be added advantage.

Experience 

  • Minimum of two (2) years relevant laboratory experience within a construction materials testing environment or reputable building contractor site laboratory.
  • Site experience will be considered alongside the laboratory experience.

 

Skills/Competencies required 

  • Technical Proficiency: Must carry heavy equipment and samples (physical strength required).
  • Communication: Ability to instruct diverse groups of students clearly and patiently.
  • Safety Awareness: Proven ability to enforce PPE compliance and lab discipline.
  • Organization: Ability to manage multiple practical groups and equipment schedules simultaneously.
  • First Aid: Valid First Aid Level 1 certificate (or willingness to obtain).

  • Advanced Diploma/BTech in Electrical Engineering at NQF level 7
  • Registration with ECSA will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years relevant experience

 

Skills/Competencies required

  • Competent in IT packages as appropriate to area of specialism; for example, Matlab to simulate and model processes and systems, and simulation packages, such as Circuitmaker, LTSpice, Multisim, or Proteus to simulate electronic circuits and systems.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), as well as email, internet and retrieval of electronic documents Knowledge of computer systems, hardware, and various types of software.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Teach and assess students at Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels for the subjects/modules within the department of Civil Engineering; i.e. Civil Engineering Management, Documentations and Physics within the department of Civil Engineering.
  • Ability to teach at all levels (Diploma and Advanced Diploma) and supervise research projects.
  • Coordinate all student programmes within the department as per required standard operating requirements.
  • Develop and improve on the curriculum content of the teaching materials and also the student module guide (SMG) for the subject/modules taught in line with industry trends and HEQSF requirements.
  • Prepare, regularly update curricula and course material for lecturers in accordance with SAQA, CHE, and DHET requirements and maintain quality assurance.
  • Participate in departmental activities as required, including research, continuous professional development, Community engagement, partnerships, and collaboration strengthening.
  • Contribute towards Faculty and Departmental research initiates.
  • Contribute to Academic citizenship and provide Faculty and University service.
  • Assist with Academic administration and Quality Assurance initiatives.
  • Performing and carrying delegated administrative duties of the department;

 

Minimum requirements

Qualifications:
