JOB DESCRIPTION
Key performance areas include but are not limited to:
▪ Develop the strategic and operational plans of the Department within the vision of the VUT and facilitate its implementation.
▪ Planning and managing the budget, infrastructure, resources and daily operations of the Department to improve financial viability and to ensure achievement of VUT mission
▪ Implement a fair and equitable staff workload
▪ Engagement with internal stakeholders to improve student success and staff development
▪ Managing and monitoring student learning activities to ensure successful completion of qualifications
▪ Attend Senate and related academic committee meetings, and coordinate advisory meetings
▪ Provide academic leadership in teaching and learning especially technology enabled learning
▪ Liaise with industry, professional bodies, and education institutions nationally and internationally
▪ Develop research capacity and research programmes to improve research outputs within the Department
▪ Increase research funding through grants and patents
▪ Manage administrative tasks including student registration and enrolment
▪ Strengthen and engage new community initiatives in the Department
▪ Implement staff development through personal development plans and team development
▪ Provide leadership in the development of new curricular and programmes in line with curriculum transformation imperatives
▪ Implement the performance management system in the Department
▪ Implement employment equity and transformation measures
▪ Increase third stream income through SLP that respond to industry needs
▪ Implement quality assurance; and
▪ Improve the quality of teaching and learning through participation in relevant programmes like tutoring, extended programmes, lecturer evaluation and academic training; and promote the use of emerging technology in T&L including blended learning strategies.
 
 
APPLICATION CRITERIA :
A)
SENIOR LECTURER :
Criteria A (Qualification):
▪ PhD/Doctorate in Electrical (Power) / Electronics Engineering/ Computer Engineering or Systems
▪ Master’s Degrees (MEng/ MTech/ MScEng, NQF9) in Electrical (Power) / Electronics Engineering/ Computer Engineering or Systems
▪ Bachelor (BEng/ BTech/ BSc Eng, NQF8) in Electrical (Power) / Electronics Engineering/ Computer Engineering or Systems
▪ Eligibility for registration with ECSA under professional engineering or technologist category (ECSA registration is compulsory for applicants with foreign qualifications)
 
Criteria B (Academic Experience):
▪ Evidence of academic leadership (one year minimum).
▪ A minimum of two years of relevant teaching experience at senior lecturer level
▪ DHET accredited research outputs (based on past six years)
➢ Two full research output units generated from publications
➢ One full research output unit generated from supervision of postgraduate students (Masters and doctoral)
▪ NRF-rating is an advantage
▪ Evidence of successful curriculum development and academic management
▪ Evidence of active participation in professional, industry and/or community activities
▪ Knowledge and experience of implementing quality assurance requirements
▪ Evidence of research leadership, attracting external funding is and advantage\
▪ Evidence of international collaboration is an advantage
▪ Experience in the initiation and implementation of post-graduate research programmes/ projects is an advantage
▪ Liaison with Industry including consultation work
▪ Evidence of development and management of SLPs is an advantage
 
B) ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
Criteria A (Qualifications):
▪ PhD/Doctorate in Electrical (Power) / Electronics Engineering/ Computer Engineering or Systems
▪ Master’s Degrees (MEng/ MTech/ MScEng, NQF9) in Electrical (Power) / Electronics Engineering/ Computer Engineering or Systems
▪ Bachelor (BEng/ BTech/ BSc Eng, NQF8) in Electrical (Power) / Electronics Engineering/ Computer Engineering or Systems
▪ Registration with ECSA under professional engineering or technologist category
 
Criteria B (Academic Experience):
▪ Evidence of academic leadership (two years minimum) at engineering programme headship or programme coordination level.
▪ A minimum of two years of relevant teaching experience at associate professorship level
▪ DHET accredited research outputs (based on past six years)
➢ Five research output units generated form publication
➢ Three full research output unit generated from supervision of postgraduate students (Masters and doctoral)
▪ NRF-rating is an advantage
▪ Evidence of successful curriculum development and academic management
▪ Evidence of active participation in professional, industry and/or community activities

▪ Master’s Degrees (MEng/ MTech/ MScEng, NQF9) in Electrical (Power) / Electronics Engineering/ Computer Engineering or Systems
▪ Bachelor (BEng/ BTech/ BSc Eng, NQF8) in Electrical (Power) / Electronics Engineering/ Computer Engineering or Systems
▪ Registration with ECSA under professional engineering or technologist category
 
Criteria B (Academic Experience):

Skills and Competencies:
Excellent communication and presentation skills, excellent teaching skills, planning and organising skills, conceptual skills, analytical ability, interpersonal skills and problem-solving skills.

Key performance areas include but are not limited to:
• Manage and provide professional and effective administrative and secretariat services to the University Council, Senate, Management Committee and their respective Committees.
• Ensure coherent and prompt communication for the implementation of decisions as well as the maintenance of the records of decisions taken through the various governance structures.
• Develop and review Standard Operating Procedures for committee administration and maintain the Electronic Decision Register (Resolutions Register) as well as the webpage of the department and oversee the functionality thereof.
• Oversee the compilation of the annual committee meetings calendar and communicate with internal and external stakeholders on matters pertaining to the area of responsibility, and oversee matters pertaining to meetings and reporting, where applicable.
• Manage administrative processes pertaining to the election, appointment and reappointment processes for Council members, where applicable, and maintain Council and Council Committee members’ lists.
• Maintain the electronic Institutional Regulatory Code (policy database) and oversee the review cycles for existing policies and the publication of newly approved policies.
• Maintain the Conflict of Interest Register for members of Council in terms of the Higher Education Act provisions.
• Regulate access to confidential reports and documents and control permission rights to the Committee Section office, databases and member information.
• Assist in managing a comprehensive committee administration service for the Council in support of the decision-making process including compiling and circulating agendas, drafting minutes and related tasks.
• Manage the maintenance of a register of decision making and the maintenance of internal forward plans and similar as required.
• Provide impartial, timely, relevant, and high-quality advice and guidance to members, officers and the public in relation to the Governance Structures’ decision-making processes and governance issues.
• Advise on the procedural recording of decisions, administrative and legal aspects of the meetings, in line with the university prescripts and to assist members and officers where appropriate.
• Assist report authors in the preparation of their reports throughout the lifecycle from drafting to decision stages, providing advice and guidance on report management processes.
• Ensure that the running of council committees and other committees/structures comply with all legislative requirements and provide advice as required.
• Ensure that minutes of meetings are accurate and lead on the co-ordination of follow-up actions and recommendations.
• Proactively review approval processes for committee meetings, drive continuous improvement and implement improvement where necessary for the benefit of the university.
• Utilise and administer virtual meeting technology as required including webcasting and voting software.
• Assist in acquiring, updating and maintaining the committee management system.
• Manage the maintenance of a register of decision making and the maintenance of internal forward plans of council and other committees as required.

Qualification:
• A minimum of an Advanced Diploma or BTech in Metallurgical Engineering.
 
Experience:
