The Faculty of Arts and Humanities offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate learning and research programmes with wide-ranging, diverse and interdisciplinary approaches. The Department of Sociology is one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities as students enjoy the engaging topics and critical debates on contemporary social issues which characterises our programmes across the undergraduate and postgraduate levels of study. These programmes are designed to encourage students to develop their sociological imagination and apply social research methodological approaches towards understanding and addressing various social issues locally and further afield. Teaching in the Department of Sociology is informed by research as the academics are recognised experts in their respective fields of research and scholarship.
The Department is expanding its academic and research programmes and seeks to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced candidate to serve in the position of an Associate Lecturer. Candidates with quantitative research methodology skills and knowledge are especially encouraged to apply for this position.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:
- Facilitate learning and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate (honours) levels.
- Teach quantitative research methodology.
- Participate in research and related scholarly activities.
- Assist with undergraduate and postgraduate research supervision.
- Participate in curriculum development and assessment activities.
- Participate in academic administration and serve on committees.
- Participate in community engagement and outreach initiatives.
Minimum Requirements
- Honours degree in Sociology and confirmed registration for a Master’s degree in Sociology
- Some experience (at least one year) in facilitating teaching and learning as a tutor or teaching assistant/graduate learning assistant in Sociology in a higher education institution.
- Skill and experience in quantitative research methodology.
Recommendations/Added Advantages:
- Registered for a PhD in Sociology with satisfactory progress towards completion.
- At least one scholarly publication or evidence of a completed manuscript.
- At least one local academic conference participation.

CENTRE FOR MULTILINGUALISM AND DIVERSITIES RESEARCH (CMDR) AND LINGUISTICS DEPARTMENT
FACULTY OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES
The Centre for Multilingualism and Diversities Research (CMDR) and the Linguistics Department at the University of the Western Cape has a vacancy (50-50 split) for a suitably qualified candidate for the post of LECTURER.
The CMDR is an established, research intensive and cross-disciplinary unit located in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Its aim is to offer a significant rethinking of multilingualism that will contribute to the development of new discourses on language with which to approach interdisciplinary work in the humanities, and social and educational sciences. The Centre hosts a journal, Multilingual Margins: A Journal of Multilingualism from the Periphery.
The Linguistics Department has strengths in the areas of multilingualism, sociolinguistics, systemic functional linguistics, formal/theoretical linguistics, forensic linguistics, communication, (critical) media studies, social semiotics and multimodality, literacy and critical discourse analysis.
The CMDR and Linguistics Department seek to appoint an individual in the centre and department with relevant experience in Multilingualism in Society including family language policy/family multilingualism and teach courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in linguistics, applied linguistics and/or sociolinguistics. In addition, the candidate is expected to supervise postgraduate students and engage in community outreach activities related to the abovementioned research niche area.
The successful candidate at the level of LECTURER will be expected to:
- Leverage their research to enhance the profiles of the CMDR and Linguistics Department.
- Supervise postgraduate Honours and Master’s students in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, and Sociolinguistics.
- Contribute to the planning and delivery of a cross-faculty seminar series on multilingualism and diversities and linguistics in the CMDR and Linguistics Department.
- Assist with the coordination of workshops, seminars and conferences in the CMDR and Linguistics Department.
- Teach courses at undergraduate level in Linguistics/Applied Linguistics/Sociolinguistics in the Linguistics Department and the CMDR Postgraduate Diploma in Language Practice.
- Contribute to the CMDR’s and Linguistics Department’s community outreach activities consistent with the University’s Institutional Operating Plan.
- Serve on centre, departmental and faculty committees as may be required.
Minimum Requirements
- A Master’s Degree in Linguistics/Applied Linguistics/Sociolinguistics with a specialisation in, among others, family language policy/family multilingualism.
- Experience in teaching Linguistics/Applied Linguistics/Multilingualism modules at undergraduate level.
- Experience in both face-to-face and online teaching as well as how to design teaching and learning material to cater for both modes at university level.
- At least 1 peer-reviewed publication in the area of multilingualism in society or language policy, commensurate with the position of Lecturer in a research-led institution.
- Knowledge and proficiency in or ability to work with African languages (this includes Kaaps also known as Afrikaaps).
