Through its academic project, UWC continues to play a leading role in helping to build an equitable and dynamic society in South Africa. The Department of Higher Education and Training (the Department) is implementing the ninth phase of the ‘New Generation of Academics Programme’ (nGAP) of the ‘Staffing South African Universities’ Framework. nGAP involves the recruitment of new academics who display significant potential for scholarship in teaching and research. The programme consists of a 6-year development programme, including short courses on research and teaching development. As a permanently appointed Academic, employment will commence with a reduced teaching load. The workload will increase to a full load within the 6-year period with a spread of responsibilities and levels. Applicable support will be provided by an appointed coach, mentor and all UWC structures and systems, while progress will be monitored to ensure successful completion of the nGAP. As this is a partnership between the Department and UWC, successful candidates will have to comply with the normal employment conditions of UWC, as well as the requirements of the Department.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Contributing to the learning and teaching programme at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Willingness to explore digital teaching and learning technologies and approaches. 
  • Supervision of Honours research projects and assisting with other postgraduate theses.  
  • Developing an independent research and publications profile;
  • Contributing to departmental academic administration.
 
Minimum Requirements
  • A minimum of 70% for the Master's degree in Women’s and Gender Studies 
  • Demonstrated experience as a Sociology lecturer, graduate lecturing assistant/teaching assistant, or tutor   
  • Familiarity with online teaching and learning platforms 
  • Some peer-reviewed scholarly publications/or evidence of manuscript/s submitted for publication consideration
  • Demonstrable familiarity with feminist and decolonial theory, methodology and pedagogy 
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills 
 
Added advantages include: 
  • The ability to assist with the supervision of postgraduate theses.
  • Fluency in at least one African language 
  • A publication record

Added advantages include:
  • The ability to teach modules on Afrikaans Literature at undergraduate and postgraduate level and assist with supervision of postgraduate theses.
  • Expertise in Postcolonial, Feminist and Critical Race Theory. 
  • Supporting the expansion of the department's research niche areas in Black Afrikaans writing and Afrikaans language varieties by organising seminars and publications.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic reports to the Rector and Vice-Chancellor and as a member of the University Executive shares in the responsibility to drive the institution’s strategic direction in line with the Institutional Operating Plan and effective governance.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic is a distinguished leader with extensive experience in higher education who: fosters and supports strategic cross-institutional collaboration, learning and teaching activities, as well as Scholarship of Engagement for Societal Impact  activities;  supports and initiates activities in support of the academic development, retention and success of a diverse student body; leads discussions and initiatives in curriculum renewal; will encourage and promote the generation of external income through academic activities; will establish national and international partnering and networks through collaboration; facilitates and delivers on the goals as set out in the University’s Institutional Operating Plan;  contributes to the transformational agenda of the University in all areas of responsibility and leads the University’s academic agenda by being responsive to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
 
Minimum Requirements
The applicant must hold a Doctoral degree and be eligible to be appointed at a Professor level, as well as a proven track record of academic excellence, and a well-established publication track record; proven management, leadership and change management skills gained at a senior level in the higher education environment; evidence of international and national partnering relations; experience in managing budgets, projects, funding and grants; demonstrable knowledge in systemic operational matters and governance in Higher Education, as well as challenges faced by universities in South Africa and internationally. Demonstrated experience in fundraising external to the university environment is essential. The applicant must display a good understanding of the integration of various forms of technology into the delivery of programmes and services.

The UWC’s Information and Communication Services (ICS) Department play a pivotal role in delivering ICT services that enable and support the University’s strategic goals and objectives. ICS, in line with growing its capability and supporting the Digital Transformation Strategy of UWC, offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced Specialist: Systems Backups and Business Continuity in the ICS IT Operations and Services Support unit.

The primary purpose of the Specialist: Systems Backups and Business Continuity is to ensure that the University’s production systems are secured through scheduled backups and to ensure the recovery and availability of all critical business systems through best practice implementation of an IT Business Continuity Plan.

The Key Responsibilities of the incumbent include but are not limited to:
  • Assume primary responsibility for the backups, restores, business continuity systems and functions,
  • Ensure backup, and business continuity systems are optimally operated by application of sound best practices, maintenance, operational and administration tasks,
  • Contribute to developing technology standards and best practices for backup and business continuity environments,
  • Contribute to the team in analysing technology industry and market trends, and determining potential impact upon the enterprise,
  • Be familiar with legislation and implementing best practices to manage retention and expunging of data,
  • The role provides 3rd level troubleshooting services in order to quickly investigate, diagnose, resolve, recover and document incidents relating to backups, backup infrastructure and system environments,
  • Plan, implement, maintain and control backup and recovery procedures,
  • Control that these procedures are updated and executed regularly,
  • Test that these procedures perform their functions correctly,
  • Maintain archived data on tape. Change, manage and test backup media (tapes),
  • Monitoring, repairing, reporting and other day-to-day tasks associated with maintaining backup resources in an optimal fashion,
  • Respond to and resolve storage access problems, retrieval issues, backup device status, and other issues,
  • Adhere to ITIL procedures for storage change management, CMDB accuracy, problem management and incident management,
  • Install and configure new and existing backup devices and corresponding software,
  • Collaborate with other team members in capacity planning and provisioning for future backup requirements,
  • Monitor and troubleshoot backup device status,
  • Perform recovery (restores) as required,
  • Work closely with the datacentre Infrastructure team.
 
Minimum Requirements
Minimum Education and Experience required:
  • A NQF level 7 or higher qualification with three years Backup/business continuity/disaster recovery experience in a datacentre environment,
or
  • Relevant accredited (industry recognised) professional certification/s in Backup/business continuity/disaster recovery with demonstrated 5 years’ experience in a datacentre environment at a large organisation or educational institution.
 
Minimum competencies required:
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills,
  • Ability to work across interdisciplinary teams,
  • Ability to analyse and resolve problems swiftly using a range of diagnostic tools and techniques,
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies,
  • Ability to adapt to best practice frameworks to secure ensure Business Continuity over a range of scenarios,
  • Ability to create and maintain technical documentation, policies and processes as related to the backup and BC environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of student generated programming across UWC student communities (residences) as well as to capacitate, strengthen, professionalise and support student structures by offering opportunities for training and development that contribute towards effective and goal orientated leadership, good governance, accountability, transparency and teamwork.
 
This includes but is not necessarily limited to:
  • Collaboration with student leadership structures in the design and implementation of relevant student driven programming and team building in their residences, and maintaining an event/programming diary for student leadership and general SLS programming
  • Coordination of programming procurement related practices in support of the student leadership in the residences
  • Design and implement training and development opportunities that strengthen and support structures towards effective and goal orientated leadership
  • Design and implement initiatives that professionalise student leadership and maintain grounds for good standing in the student community through the development and maintenance of practices related to good governance, accountability, transparency and teamwork
  • Implementation of monitoring and evaluation processes for student leadership service and programme delivery and general SLS training initiatives
  • Coordination of Student Leadership Election processes
[The incumbent will share the university’s strong focus on research-related and reporting processes through monitoring and evaluation practices and compilation of databases and will be required to be flexible around work hours as most activities take place after hours and in terms of the availability of the students serviced by the office]
 
Minimum Requirements
  • Honours Degree in the Social Sciences 
  • Evidence of involvement in training/workshop/seminar development and facilitation with large groups is essential (minimum of two year’s demonstrated experience)
  • Familiarity with working in an academic/residence environment in the context of Higher Education as well as working directly with tertiary students in the co-curricular space
  • Prior experience must demonstrate successful background in decision making processes, excellent organisational skills, the ability to multi-task, the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement, good communication skills (both verbal & written) and excellent interpersonal skills
  • An employment background demonstrating an understanding of development theory or exposure to work experiences that allowed in-service learning
  • Knowledge around policy and constitutional designs and review is preferred
  • A valid code B drivers licence must be in possession at the time of application and the applicant must be in possession of the licence for at least two (2) years
  • must be prepared to work after hours

An opportunity currently exists for candidates to apply for the position of Administrative Officer to provide administrative support to the Dean’s Office in respect of all Faculty administrative processes, in order to ensure alignment and compliance with central administrative systems and procedures; and to provide a professional support service to academics, students and staff.
