The Faculty of Dentistry is a world-class Oral Health Centre committed to the promotion of oral health through excellence of its Learning & Teaching, service rendering and research. The Faculty seeks professionally qualified candidates with excellent records for a post on the joint establishment of the University of the Western Cape and the Provincial Administration of the Western Cape, on the conditions of service of the University of the Western Cape.
The successful candidate for Professor/Associate Professor/Head Clinical Department in the Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery will be responsible for the following key performance areas:
- Facilitate teaching, learning and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery,
- Assist with teaching, learning and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the other disciplines of dentistry,
- Rendering a maxillofacial and oral surgery service on the combined platform i.e. Tygerberg and Mitchells Plain Oral Health Centres, Groote Schuur, Tygerberg and Red Cross Academic Hospitals and secondary hospitals where indicated,
- Conduct research and publish primarily in the disciplines and related disciplines of Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery,
- Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training and research supervision,
- Provide academic leadership and effective administration,
- Be proactive as a member or participant in national and international conferences, societies, editorial boards, statutory bodies, colleges etc.
- Undertake curriculum development and assessment,
- Participate in community engagement and outreach,
- Be an ethical leader for the department, university and profession.

Minimum Requirements
Minimum Requirements – Professor/Head Clinical Department
- PhD or *equivalent, preferably in the field of Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery,
- Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning, teaching and training, preferably in the field of Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery,
- Valid registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Specialist in Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery with a minimum of 7 years’ experience after registration as a maxillofacial and oral surgical specialist,
- A broad understanding in all aspects of the specialty,
- A record of peer reviewed publications, preferably in the field of Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery,
- A record of postgraduate student teaching, learning, training and research supervision,
- Evidence of expertise, national standing, and definite international presence in his/her discipline,
- The integration of community engagement with learning and teaching and/or research,
- Experience in generating research grants.
Minimum Requirements - Associate Professor/Head Clinical Department
- PhD or *equivalent or master’s degree with an acceptable publication record, preferably in the field of Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery or superspeciality in niche area of interest e.g. Cleft Lip and Palate, TMJ surgery, Oncology Surgery etc.
- Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching, preferably in the field of Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery,
- Valid registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Specialist in Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery with a minimum of 7 years’ experience after registration as a maxillofacial and oral surgical specialist,
- A broad understanding in all aspects of the specialty,
- A record of peer reviewed publications, preferably in the field of Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery,
- A record of postgraduate student teaching, learning, training and research involvement,
- The integration of community engagement with learning and teaching and/or research,
- Evidence of expertise and national standing in his/her discipline.
Kindly note:
*By "equivalent" we refer to applicants that may have a dual qualification (qualified in medicine and dentistry) or a qualification in a sub-speciality in the field of surgery coupled with clinical experience.
The successful candidate will provide maxillofacial and oral surgery services, including scheduled overtime, across designated health centres and hospitals per the departmental roster, with compensation aligning to institutional and labor guidelines.
