The Faculty of Natural Sciences hosts nine academic departments, a School of Pharmacy and several world-class research institutes and centres. Based on a foundation of internationally-recognised quality research, the faculty is committed to learning and teaching excellence and offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the major scientific disciplines as well as a professional degree in Pharmacy.
The Department of Medical Biosciences (MBS) is comprised of the three interrelated disciplines of Physiology, Anatomy, and Medical Microbiology. Housed within the Faculty of Science, the Department offers service courses to the Faculties of Dentistry, Community and Health Sciences, and the School of Pharmacy at the undergraduate level and across Faculties at the postgraduate level.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:
- Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Physiology
- Be able to teach specific Physiology content across the various modules of MBS
- Conduct research and publish in the field of Physiology
- Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision
- Undertake curriculum development and assessment
- Participate in community engagement and outreach
- Play a role in the administrative activities of the Department and Faculty
- Fulfil any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department
Minimum Requirements
- MSc qualification in the research field of Physiology and registered for a PhD in Physiology or related field, with a clear plan for completion
- Experience in facilitating learning and teaching in the field of Physiology
- Evidence of relevant high-quality, peer-reviewed research outputs.
- A record of postgraduate research supervision at Honours level.
- Evidence of active participation in community engagement activity integrated with learning and teaching and/or research.

The role of the Human Resources Department is to support the University’s People Framework which presents challenging people deliverables in relation to change and transformation projects and strategies. Transformational leadership is required from all at the University, and the role of HR is both to enable and facilitate processes for continuous improvement.
Reporting to the Director: HR Service Excellence the successful candidate appointed as Specialist: Employee Wellness will be responsible for planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive and multidimensional employee wellness portfolio and program for the University of the Western Cape, with a balanced emphasis on both organizational and individual wellness. (e.g. nutritional and physical health, mental/emotional health, financial wellbeing and lifestyle, relationship management and cultural wellness) that is accessible and meets the needs of our employees. The Specialist: Employee Wellness will cultivate health and wellbeing programs and initiatives that align with institutional priorities, health-related data, organizational culture and retention goals.
Duties will include inter alia:
- Manage a comprehensive wellness programme;
- Management of wellness communication and related information and keep digital platforms relevant and updated;
- Assist in monitoring program budget;
- Engage and assist with intervention programmes including occupational, reasonable accommodation requests and incapacity related matters;
- Facilitate and engage outsourced counselling service and advisory services;
- Advise internal clients, HR Consultants and stakeholders of appropriate interventions and support programmes;
- Responsible for administration and general inquiries relating to staff wellness;
- Assist and drive the development of Wellness Strategy, annual strategic and operational plans and policies;
- Gather and analyse information to determine trends, programme utilisation for decision making purposes;
- Keep abreast of current national wellness initiatives and activities, develop a network of resources and contacts to further expand the Employee Wellness Program;
- Establish a network of professionals and stakeholders that can contribute towards the wellness offering;
- Submission and writing of reports;
- Facilitate workshops and information sessions;
- Actively participate to the activities of the University’s Integrated Talent Management Framework and Institutional Operating Plan.
Minimum Requirements
For the portfolio of Specialist: Employee Wellness, you will be equipped with the following qualifications and attributes:
- An Honours Degree in Industrial Psychology, Social Science, Psychology, Human Resources or related qualification at NQF 8 level;
- 5 years or more experience in the human resources environment and staffing services;
- Registration with a Professional body (SABPP; HPSCA or related);
- Proven experience in development of wellness programmes, stakeholder engagement and facilitation of wellness and related programmes;
- Proven experience in facilitation of programmes/activities relevant to employee wellness;
- Advanced Digitisation Skills and contribution towards activities in the AI and digital context.
- Experience in a Higher Education environment.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of the Western Cape is internationally recognised for its excellence in teaching and research. We are seeking candidates for this demanding and accountable position in our renowned and respected Faculty. The role is primarily devoted to the oversight, management, and delivery of academic administrative services, working in partnership with the Dean, Deputy Deans and chairpersons of academic departments. As the successful candidate you will have overall responsibility for the operational management of the Faculty’s academic administration and will work closely with the Faculty’s leadership, academics, administrators and students, as well as the Registrar’s office and Human Resources.
The successful incumbent will offer strategic support, guidance on policy formulation, and advice to the Faculty on every aspect of administration management. You will have the responsibility of putting into practice policy and administrative procedures in the Faculty as well as managing the Faculty Office staff and overseeing procedures within the Faculty.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
- Facilitating a vision and mission for the administrative function of the Faculty;
- Providing strategic support in the development and implementation of policies and the Faculty Operational Plan as a member of the leadership team;
- Establishing an annual administrative operational plan in line with the Institutional and Faculty Operational Plans;
- Staff management in relation to the University’s Personal Development Management System (PDS) and Integrated Talent Management Framework (ITMF);
- Advising and liaising with academics, departmental administrative staff, students, applicants and committees;
- Ensuring compliance and alignment with central administrative systems, procedures and standards;
- Governance and committee administration;
- Monitoring, evaluation, reporting, data analysis and planning;
- Administering Faculty finances and preparing an annual Faculty budget for the Dean;
- Integrating central HR practices with Faculty needs;
- Maintaining and improving facilities, equipment, building standards, hygiene and cleanliness.
Minimum Requirements
- An NQF 9 qualification (Master’s degree);
- At least 5 years academic administration experience at a senior level in a higher education environment;
- 5 years proven staff management experience, preferably in higher education;
- Proven working knowledge of Higher Education legislation, regulations and policies;
- Experience in high-level committee servicing;
- A proven ability in the coordination of diverse, complex and high-level administrative functions, as they relate to the academic cycle in a higher education institution;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
- A high level of computer literacy and proficiency in MS packages.
- Fluency in a South African indigenous language.
