The University of the Western Cape (UWC) enjoys national and international acclaim for its continuing contribution to democratic change in South Africa, for making quality education accessible to all South Africans and for developing centres of excellence of national importance. UWC seeks to appoint a writer to communicate a set of meta-messages to internal and external stakeholders that are underpinned by its strategic objectives as set out in the Institutional Operating Plan (IOP).
The individual will report directly to the Editor or Manager: Media, Marketing & Communications who reports to the Director: Institutional Advancement. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team. The post is located in the Media, Marketing and Communications Unit.
The appointee’s duties will include, but not be limited to, the administration and execution of the following tasks:
- Researching, writing and editing articles for various UWC.
- Proactively seeking story leads.
- Writing press releases for mainstream media.
- Writing features for internal and external stakeholders.
- Producing content for UWC electronic communication platforms, including the website and social media.
- Liaising with academics and other faculty and unit support staff to identify newsworthy articles.
- Collating the latest UWC and higher education news for the university’s electronic newsletter and
- Other ad-hoc duties, such as photography and videography, to support university projects and events.
Minimum Requirements
Minimum Requirements (Qualification and Experience)
- A Bachelor’s degree at NQF level 7 or an equivalent qualification in Media and Communications.
- At least five years’ experience directly related to the specified duties and responsibilities in the media industry or a similar higher education media office.
- A portfolio of evidence showcasing relevant work.
Required competencies (skills, knowledge and behavioural attributes):
- Knowledge of current and emerging media trends.
- Excellent journalistic skills – particularly in writing and editorial functions.
- An outstanding command of the English language and a good command of either Afrikaans or isiXhosa.
- Operational planning and project management skills.
- Ability to evaluate public opinion and conduct online research.
- Good organisational skills and time management.
- Ability to accurately popularise academic research.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with various constituencies.
- Previous experience in the higher education environment will be an advantage.

The Library’s goals are enabled through dedicated and knowledgeable staff working within a quality-driven service ethic. Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the post of Library Systems Administrator. This post forms part of the LICT team and is responsible for managing and maintaining the library’s IT spaces, systems and infrastructure along with contributing to the development of IT strategies and efficiencies.
Key Performance Areas:
- Manage and administer library-specific servers and server-based applications,
- Ensure the seamless operation of library IT equipment, including student and library staff computer environments,
- Manage the Knowledge Commons (KC) and library MakerSpace, ensuring facilities are well maintained and running optimally,
- Assist with Systems Librarian functions; deputise when needed,
- Collaborate with library staff, ICS, and vendors to align systems with institutional goals,
- Other duties that contribute to overall planning and implementation of Library IT strategies.
Minimum Requirements (Qualification and Experience)
- Matric Certificate with relevant accredited (industry-recognized) professional IT certifications and 5 years relevant experience.
- A relevant IT National Diploma at NQF Level 6 with 3 years relevant experience
Required competencies (skills, knowledge and behavioural attributes) etc.:
Knowledge of Windows and Linux servers,
- Analytical and problem-solving skills,
- Strong understanding of APIs, networking protocols, and system integrations,
- Knowledge in database management systems (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle),
- Proficiency in data extraction, analysis, and visualization tools,
- Ability to create and maintain technical documentation, policies and processes as related to IT infrastructure environments,
- Ability to evaluate the applicability of new technologies,
- Knowledge of ensuring security and integrity of IT infrastructure.

An exciting opportunity exists in the UWC research development and postgraduate support office for a suitably qualified candidate to contribute to the Institution`s research activities and achievements
The successful incumbent is responsible for the following Key Performance Areas:
- Provide support, education and assistance to the researchers and their teams
- Serves as the link to ensure accurate & timely information flow by maintaining effective working relationships with the team and stakeholders.
- Responsible for all aspects of administration associated with the research ethics and research integrity procedures.
- Coordinate and promote good research conduct and practices across the University.
- Provide guidance and education with respect to submission content
- Ensure accurate interpretation and implementation of current submissions.
- Coordinate the ongoing development of research ethics processes, including the introduction and implementation of new standard operating processes and policies. This will be done by offering training sessions to staff on REC processes and guidelines.
- Coordinate and update information in the University and Office Research Development databases to ensure that all research ethics-related documents and forms are up to date.
- Support in the preparation of Annual Reports to National Health Research Ethics Council
- Prepare / issue notifications of ethical approval by the research committee; complete and issue approval forms for granting agencies.
- Develop, implement, and maintain records and follow up procedures for all research projects.
- Coordinate logistical arrangement for other training opportunities outside of UWC, for REC members.
- Maintain an effective filing system
- Arrange and organize research ethics meetings; prepare and distribute agenda and materials; arrange for all investigators and guests to be present.
- Coordinate the logistical arrangement for the REC meetings.
- Coordinate the preparing and distributing the meeting pack prior to each meeting.
- Minute-taking at the meeting, where applicable
- Preparation of minutes following the meeting, as well as the coordination of any actions resulting from the meeting.

- A relevant Honours Degree at an NQF 8 or an equivalent qualification
- A minimum of 5 years relevant experience in administration of a Research Ethics Committee.
- A minimum of 3 years staff supervision experience.
- Experience and understanding of a research ethics environment at a University, Research Institute, or equivalent.
- An understating of NHREC requirements and standards, guidelines relevant to clinical and research ethics.
- Proven report writing and minute-taking skills and working ability of the Committee Management Systems.
- Working knowledge and experience of higher education governance policies, procedures, and structures.
- Proficiency in MS Office and Digital Media.
