The Statistics and Population Studies Department is hosted in the Faculty of Natural Sciences. In 2018, the department started an industry directed MSc in Statistical Sciences with specialisation in Data Science. Consider joining our new initiative and help train the Statisticians, Data Analysts and Data Scientists of the future.
- Facilitate learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Statistics/Data Science
- Conduct research and publish on topics related to Statistics/Data Science
- Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision
- Provide academic leadership
- Undertake curriculum development and assessment
- Undertake community/industry engagement and outreach
Minimum Requirements
- MSc in Statistics or Data Science or Mathematical Statistics
- Demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, in the field of Statistics or Data Science
- Currently registered for a PhD in Statistics or Data Science or Mathematical Statistics
- A record of successful postgraduate supervision at the honours level
- A record of quality peer reviewed publications, in the field of Statistics, Applied Statistics or Data Science or proof of peer reviewed technical reports submitted in industry
- Proven expertise in applying complex statistical and data science techniques in statistical packages such as SAS, R and/or Python
Required competencies (skills, knowledge, and behavioural attributes)
- Adaptability and the ability to operate in a diverse environment
- Student focused approach
- Ability and interest to supervise at the postgraduate level specialising in industry directed research
- Planning and organising skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
- Presentation and facilitation skills
- Knowledge and skills in the discipline and in the core strategic areas, namely learning and teaching, research and scholarship and community engagement.

A vacancy exists in the department for a contract Lecturer to teach Statistics in the Extended Curriculum Programme. This is one-year contract, but may be renewed depending on funding. In addition to the teaching responsibilities outlined below, participation in research activities is encouraged, provided it does not interfere with teaching duties, and off-campus research activities should not be scheduled to coincide with academic term times.

As part of its promotion of the scholarship of teaching and learning, the Faculty seeks to appoint a Professor / Associate Professor in Science Education within the School of Science and Mathematics Education.
Key Performance Areas
The successful incumbent will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty. He/ She will be responsible for the following key performance areas with different emphasis in each area depending on the level of appointment:
- Facilitate learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Science Education
- Conduct research and publish in the field of Science Education
- Construct a coherent research agenda consistent with the broad research goals of Science Education and within the Faculty
- Promote and support research activities in the School of Science and Mathematics Education including applications for funded research, and cooperate with SSME and the Science Learning Centre for Africa in research initiatives
- Postgraduate supervision
- Provide academic leadership
- Curriculum development and assessment
- Scholarship of engagement for societal impact
- Serve on committees devoted to the development of the Science Education and faculty objectives
Minimum Requirements
Minimum Requirements (for appointment at the rank of Professor)
- A PhD in Science Education or equivalent
- A strong academic record, with extensive experience in facilitating learning and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the field of Science Education
- A strong track record of quality academic research
- A record of successful postgraduate supervision of Masters and PhD students
- Evidence of expertise, national standing, and international recognition in his/her discipline.
- The integration of community engagement with learning, teaching and research
- Leadership experience at both departmental and faculty levels
Minimum Requirements (for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor)
- A PhD in Science Education or equivalent
- Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the field of Science Education
- A track record of quality academic research with at least 10 DHET accredited publications related to the field of Science Education
- A record of successful postgraduate supervision of Masters and PhD students
- Evidence of expertise and national standing in his/her field of research.
- The integration of community engagement with learning, teaching and research
- Leadership experience at departmental and faculty levels
Recommendation for Professor level (in addition to the minimum requirements)
- A NRF rating would be considered an added advantage

The Division for Student Development and Support (SDS) plays a leading role in creating a holistically focused, enabling environment and provides excellent opportunities for students to develop to their full potential as active scholars and responsive citizens in South Africa.
Applications for the post of Coordinator: Reslife Student Leadership Support (SLS), are invited from dynamic and vibrant professionals who constantly strive for personal growth and self-improvement. It is essential that applicants can demonstrate relevant student housing experience at a tertiary level; they must be client and service oriented and passionate about students and their co-curricular development and well-being.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of student generated programming across UWC student communities (residences) as well as to capacitate, strengthen, professionalise and support student structures by offering opportunities for training and development that contribute towards effective and goal orientated leadership, good governance, accountability, transparency and teamwork.
This includes but is not necessarily limited to:
- Collaboration with student leadership structures in the design and implementation of relevant student driven programming and team building in their residences, and maintaining an event/programming diary for student leadership and general SLS programming
- Coordination of programming procurement related practices in support of the student leadership in the residences
- Design and implement training and development opportunities that strengthen and support structures towards effective and goal orientated leadership
- Design and implement initiatives that professionalise student leadership and maintain grounds for good standing in the student community through the development and maintenance of practices related to good governance, accountability, transparency and teamwork
- Implementation of monitoring and evaluation processes for student leadership service and programme delivery and general SLS training initiatives
- Coordination of Student Leadership Election processes
Minimum Requirements
- Honours Degree in the Social Sciences
- Evidence of involvement in training/workshop/seminar development and facilitation with large groups is essential (minimum of two year’s demonstrated experience)
- Familiarity with working in an academic/residence environment in the context of Higher Education as well as working directly with tertiary students in the co-curricular space
- Prior experience must demonstrate successful background in decision making processes, excellent organisational skills, the ability to multi-task, the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement, good communication skills (both verbal & written) and excellent interpersonal skills
- An employment background demonstrating an understanding of development theory or exposure to work experiences that allowed in-service learning
- Knowledge around policy and constitutional designs and review is preferred
- A valid code B drivers licence must be in possession at the time of application and the applicant must be in possession of the licence for at least two (2) years
