Background and Context
As part of its Vision 130 strategic trajectory, the University of the Free State (UFS) is establishing four flagship Research Themes that define the institution’s leadership in areas of national importance and global relevance. The Research Theme: Systems for Societal Development is a central pillar in this framework, focusing on how integrated, innovative, and resilient systems can drive sustainable development and equitable societal transformation.
This theme promotes inter-, multi- and transdisciplinary research that bridges social innovation, governance, digital transformation, economic systems, and human capital development — supporting the creation of sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready societies. The Theme Leader will play a critical role in driving high-impact collaboration across disciplines and sectors to ensure that UFS is recognised nationally and internationally as a leader in research for social and systems transformation.
 
Key Responsibilities:
​​​​​​​•    Provide Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a visionary research strategy for the Systems for Societal Development theme, ensuring alignment with the UFS Strategic Plan, national research priorities, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Position UFS as a national leader and continental collaborator in systemic research for sustainable development and innovation.
•    Drive Interdisciplinary, Multidisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Research Excellence: Lead and coordinate transformative, cross-faculty research programmes that explore how systems — economic, digital, human, infrastructure and institutional — shape and support sustainable societies. Promote integrative research across the theme’s six focus areas: Community Development and Social Innovation; Human Capital and the Future of Work; Digital Futures and Data Science; Infrastructure and Technological Advancement; Financial and Economic Systems; Sustainable Urban and Municipal Development.
•    Advance Societal and Policy Impact: Engage with government, industry, and civil society partners to co-design research that informs public policy, governance models, and sustainable service delivery. Foster evidence-based innovation that enhances social cohesion, inclusion, and institutional resilience.
•    Secure Research Funding and Partnerships: Lead competitive funding proposals to national and international funding bodies, development agencies, and industry partners. Build diverse income streams through grants, strategic partnerships, and contract research.
•    Capacity Development and Mentorship: Supervise postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows in fields aligned with systems, governance, and innovation studies. Cultivate a diverse pipeline of emerging researchers committed to societal transformation and interdisciplinary research excellence.
•    Institutional Collaboration and Representation: Work closely with other Research Theme Leaders and the Directorate Research Development (DRD) to align initiatives with UFS’s strategic research agenda. Represent UFS at national and international research networks related to systems, development, and social innovation.
 
Minimum Requirements:
​​​​​​​​​​​​​​•    A PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Social Sciences, Economics, Governance, Engineering, Data Science, Development Studies, or related interdisciplinary areas).
•    Appointable at Associate or Full Professor level, based on the applicable UFS criteria for such appointments.
•    Proven leadership experience in managing complex, multidisciplinary research programmes or centres.
•    A strong research record in one or more of the theme’s focus areas.
•    Demonstrated success in acquiring and managing external research funding.
•    Experience in stakeholder engagement across academia, government, industry, and community sectors.
•    Excellent strategic planning, communication, and networking skills.
 
Preferred / Advantageous Criteria:
•    NRF-rated researcher or equivalent international academic recognition.
•    Experience in large-scale international or transdisciplinary research collaborations.
•    Knowledge of systems theory, innovation ecosystems, and policy research frameworks.
•    Demonstrated success in translating research outcomes into policy or applied societal impact.

The University of the Free State (UFS) is entering a dynamic phase of research transformation under Vision 130, aimed at positioning the institution as a research-led, globally engaged university. The Research Theme Leader: Sustainable Futures will provide visionary, collaborative, and inclusive leadership to drive the University’s research excellence in sustainability, environmental resilience, circular economies, and future-oriented innovation. The incumbent will advance interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary partnerships that address complex societal and planetary challenges in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Agenda 2063, and the DSI Decadal Plan.
 
Key Responsibilities:
​​​​​​​•    Develop and implement a strategic vision and roadmap for the Sustainable Futures theme, positioning the UFS as a national and international leader in sustainability research and innovation.
•    Foster an inclusive, future-focused research culture that supports high-impact, interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration across faculties and campuses.
•    Lead and expand a portfolio of high-quality, internationally visible research projects.
•    Secure competitive research funding from diverse sources, including the NRF, DSI, industry, philanthropic organisations, and international consortia.
•    Publish impactful research outputs in accredited, high-impact journals and contribute to UFS’s research visibility and citation profile.
•    Build and strengthen partnerships with government, industry, and community stakeholders to ensure that research outputs translate into societal and economic benefit.
•    Represent UFS at national and global sustainability networks, think-tanks, and research alliances.
•    Mentor emerging researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and postgraduate students, cultivating the next generation of sustainability scientists and scholars.
•    Collaborate with other Theme Leaders and the Directorate Research Development (DRD) to align initiatives with institutional strategic priorities.
•    Contribute to institutional policy development, strategic reporting, and performance monitoring related to sustainability research.
 
Minimum Requirements
​​​​​​​​​​​​​​•    A PhD in a field relevant to sustainable development, environmental sciences, or related transdisciplinary areas.
•    Appointable at Associate or Full Professor level, based on the applicable UFS criteria for such appointments.
•    A proven track record of high-impact research outputs and postgraduate supervision.
•    Demonstrated leadership experience in managing large, multi-disciplinary research teams or thematic programmes.
•    Evidence of sustained success in attracting and managing external research funding.
•    Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with a record of partnerships across academia, industry, and government.
•    Excellent strategic planning, communication, and networking abilities.
 
Preferred / Advantageous Criteria:
•    NRF-rated researcher or equivalent international recognition.
•    Experience in international research collaboration and global sustainability initiatives.
•    Experience in developing innovation pipelines, technology transfer, or knowledge translation related to sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:
•    Provide Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a strategic vision and roadmap for the Flourishing Life theme, ensuring alignment with the UFS Strategic Plan and national research priorities. Position UFS as a leading national and continental hub for scholarship in human flourishing, peacebuilding, and cultural renewal.
•    Drive Interdisciplinary, Multidisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Research Excellence: Lead high-impact research that explores the intersections of identity, justice, ethics, and well-being across disciplines. Promote collaboration across faculties and institutes to advance the theme’s three focus areas: Cross-border and Global Issues; Identity, Culture, and Heritage; Peace, Democracy, Social Justice, and Human Rights.
•    Advance Societal and Policy Impact: Encourage research that contributes to reconciliation, inclusive development, and cultural understanding. Engage with communities, policymakers, and civil society to translate research into tangible impact.
•    Secure Research Funding and Partnerships: Lead and coordinate the submission of competitive proposals to national and international funding bodies, philanthropic organisations, and contract research opportunities. Cultivate partnerships with government, NGOs, and private-sector organisations that advance the social impact of UFS research.
•    Capacity Development and Mentorship: Supervise and mentor postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows engaged in humanities and social justice research. Build a diverse and dynamic research community that fosters excellence and inclusivity.
•    Institutional Integration and Representation: Collaborate with other Theme Leaders and the Directorate Research Development (DRD) to align initiatives with institutional priorities. The Research Theme Leader is the leader of a Group: Planetary Health and Well-being, reflecting UFS’s commitment to advancing integrative, transdisciplinary research that links human, animal, and environmental health within the broader framework of the One Health and Planetary Health paradigms. The Research Theme Leader will provide strategic directions to mobilise expertise across the faculties of Health Sciences, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, and Humanities, ensuring that UFS becomes a recognised continental leader in health resilience, sustainability, and ecosystem well-being.
 
Key Responsibilities:
•    Provide Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a forward-looking research vision and roadmap that establishes UFS as a leading centre of excellence in planetary and One Health research. Position the theme within global networks such as the Planetary Health Alliance, BRICS Health Cooperation Framework, and relevant African Union and WHO initiatives.
•    Drive Interdisciplinary, Multidisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Research Excellence: Lead high-impact, cross-faculty research programmes addressing critical intersections between environment, health, and sustainability. Promote data-driven, evidence-based approaches to planetary health challenges, including climate change, food systems, zoonoses, and ecosystem degradation.
•    Advance Innovation and Societal Impact: Translate research into solutions that improve health outcomes, policy frameworks, and community resilience. Foster collaboration with government, industry, NGOs, and international organisations to influence health policy and environmental governance.
•    Secure Research Funding and Partnerships: Lead and coordinate competitive funding proposals to local and international agencies (NRF, DSI, NIH, WHO, EU Horizon, philanthropic foundations, etc.). Develop multi-stakeholder partnerships and manage sustainable funding portfolios to support long-term programme growth.
•    Capacity Development and Mentorship: Supervise postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows in planetary health and related domains. Build research capacity by mentoring emerging scholars, with a focus on diversity, inclusion, and interdisciplinary excellence.
•    Institutional Integration: Collaborate with other Research Theme Leaders and the Directorate Research Development (DRD) to ensure institutional coherence and strategic alignment. Represent UFS nationally and internationally in planetary health forums and policy dialogues.

•    A PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., Environmental Health, Public Health, Epidemiology, Sustainability Science, Veterinary or Agricultural Science, Environmental Humanities, or related interdisciplinary fields).

Description
The University of the Free State (UFS) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship in the School of Biomedical Sciences, Department of Basic Medical Sciences. Candidates interested in pursuing an academic or professional career in biomedical research, with special research interest in preclinical (in vitro) cancer research and advanced cell-culture modelling, are encouraged to apply.
The fellowship will enable an outstanding doctoral graduate to obtain experience of research and innovation at a higher education institution under the mentorship of established researchers.
The fellowship is awarded on a competitive basis, taking into account the applicants' academic achievements, publication outputs and research potential, as well as the relevance of prior experience and expertise. The fellowship is available for a period of one year, renewable for up to three years subject to satisfactory performance. 
 
Duties and responsibilities:
•    Conduct innovative research in the field of New Approach Methods (NAMs), relating to the development and validation of novel advanced three-dimensional (3D) cancer models for pharmaceutical applications. 
•    Conceptualise own research project and secure external funding.
•    Training and co-supervision of postgraduate students.
•    Author/co-author at least three (3) publication outputs per year in the form of DHET–accredited scholarly journal articles or books/chapters in books. The renewal of the fellowship beyond the first year depends on satisfactory performance and the submission of an annual progress report.
•    Participate in interdisciplinary research projects.
•    Register and reside as a post-doctoral research fellow at the UFS and actively participate in research events within the Faculty of Health Sciences.
 
Eligibility requirements:
•    Open to all South African and foreign nationals for full-time research at the University if the Free State (Bloemfontein campus). 
•    Graduated with a PhD degree in the field of Biomedical/Medical-Bio/Pharmaceutical sciences or related field within the last five years.
•    Strong scientific publication record.
•    Experience in conventional (2D) cell culture, advanced (3D) cell culture - (advantageous) techniques.
•    Experience in conducting experiments using microscopy, Western blot workflow and qPCR using the QuantStudio 5 system.   
•    Experience in quantitative data analysis.
•    Ability to work independently as well as in a team. 
•    Successful applicants may not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship.
•    Successful applicants must be able to relocate to the UFS for the duration of the fellowship. This is a residential fellowship: the successful applicant is required to spend 80% of their postdoctoral period at the UFS.

-    Inspect all buildings to ensure proper compliance with fire protection and safety regulations.
-    Coordinate training for emergency coordinators and other occupants.

Reporting of Incident:
-    Ensure all accidents are reported to the compensation commissioner within 7 days when medical treatment is required.
-    Ensure first doctor's report & accident report must be submitted to the Compensation Commissioner to consider a Claim.
-    Ensure if the injury continues for a long time, the medical practitioner sends a Progress Medical Report to the Commissioner.
-    Ensure the progress reports are submitted monthly until the condition is fully stabilized.
-    Ensure a Final Medical Report is submitted to the Compensation Commissioner.
-    Ensure resumption Report is completed and submitted to the Commissioner.
     Injuries caused by motor vehicles accidents:
-    Obtain a case number and a copy of the driver’s license of the employee.
-    Open a file for the employee and place copies of all documents and correspondence related to the accident in the file.
-    Keep all documentation related to the accident for a minimum of three (3) years.
-    Complete the Motor Vehicle Accident Report in co-operation with the employee.
Fatal Accidents:
-    Report on the fatal accident with Protection Services.
-    Report on the fatal accident within one (1) working day to the Compensation Commissioner in Bloemfontein. 
-    Submit the required documents to the office of the Compensation Commissioner.
Injury Statistics
-    Collect and report monthly injury statistics to University Estate.
-    Complete Incident Investigation form.
