Description
The University of the Free State (UFS) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship on the use of Information and Communication and Technology in Education, within the Teaching Practice Directorate located in the Faculty of Education. 
Applicants interested in pursuing an academic career in ICTs in Education research, with special focus on teaching and learning using ICTs in schools during teaching practice and/or the use of ICTs in teacher education generally are strongly encouraged to apply. The fellowship will enable an outstanding doctoral graduate to obtain experience of research, innovation, and community service at a higher education institution under the mentorship of established researchers.
The fellowship is awarded on a competitive basis, taking into account the applicant's academic achievements, research outputs and potential, as well as the relevance of his/her prior experience and expertise. The fellowship is available for a period of one year, renewable for up to three years subject to satisfactory performance.
 
Duties and responsibilities:
•    Conduct innovative research in the following areas: Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Schooling, especially for teaching the sciences in schools; the use of ICTs in Teacher Education; and School-based Teaching Practice (WIL) in general. 
•    Author/co-author at least three (3) publication outputs per year in the form of DHET–accredited scholarly journal articles or books/chapters in books.
•    Do limited teaching in the Teacher Education and Teaching Practice programmes, where appropriate.
•    Provide limited supervision and/or co-supervision at Honours, master’s and/or Doctoral level where appropriate.
•    Register and reside as a postdoctoral research fellow at the UFS and participate in relevant activities of the School of Postgraduate Studies and the Directorate of Research.
•    Conduct innovative research and obtain evidence- based empirical data on current educational developments in schools associated with the Faculty of Education.
•    The renewal of the fellowship beyond the first year depends on satisfactory performance and the submission of an annual progress report.
•    Prepare and present papers during seminars and other research events.
 
Eligibility requirements:
•    Open to all South African and foreign nationals for full-time research at the University of the Free State.
•    Graduated with a PhD degree in Education with a specialization in the use of Information and Communication and Technology (ICT) in Education within the last five years.
•    Successful applicants may not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship
•    Successful applicants must be able to relocate to the UFS for the duration of the fellowship. This is a residential fellowship: the successful applicant is required to spend 80% of her/his postdoctoral period at the UFS Bloemfontein Campus.
 
Value of the fellowship:
•    R 240,000 annual fellowship.
•    R 30,000 additional research expenses fund.

Description
The University of the Free State (UFS) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship to join the Carbohydrates and Enzymology Laboratory (CHEM-LAB) under the Botany Division in the Department of Plant Science. Candidates interested in pursuing an academic or professional career in Plant Biochemistry with a background in or special research interest in studying Plant metabolomics, proteomics, glycomics or enzymology are encouraged to apply.
 
CHEM-LAB’s research thrust is to correlate the Physiological and Biochemical functions of carbohydrates and carbohydrates-active enzymes (CAZymes) to comprehensively understand their protective role in plants against biotic and abiotic stress agents, and the application of CAZymes in converting agricultural lignocellulolytic biomass into value-added product (VAPs) for the circular economy.
 
The fellowship will be awarded on a competitive basis, considering the applicants' academic achievements, publication outputs and research potential, as well as the relevance of prior experience and expertise. The fellowship is available for a period of one year, renewable for up to five years, subject to satisfactory performance.
 
Duties and responsibilities:
•    Conduct innovative research in the following areas: Plant Biochemistry, Plant Physiology, or related fields. Proficiency in experimental design and execution utilizing structural and non-structural carbohydrates (or glycomics) quantitative analysis; conduct bioassays for analysing the CAZymes specific activities, characterization, and kinetics; extract, process, and analyse physiological processes to established wheat defence strategies against fungal and pest attacks or abiotic stress adaptation.
•    Author/co-author at least two (2) publication output per year in the form of DHET–accredited scholarly journal articles or books/chapters in books. The renewal of the fellowship beyond the first year depends on satisfactory performance and the submission of an annual progress report.
•    Initiate projects and seek funding.
•    Register and reside as a postdoctoral research fellow at the UFS and participate in relevant activities of the Centre for Graduate Support and the Directorate of Research.

Duties and responsibilities:
•    Oversee the scheduling and functioning of all undergraduate and postgraduate clinical learning in the skills- and simulation laboratories.
•    Arrange simulation-based education and debriefing orientation sessions as required.
•    Collaboration with lecturing staff, design and develop simulation-based scenarios (the person must be experienced in simulation to this work apart from assistance from lecturers).
•    Assist lecturing staff to execute simulation learning and other clinical learning opportunities.
•    Maintain and operate the simulation laboratory, including troubleshooting and 
•    Collaborating with information technology personnel
•    Supervise students during learning sessions and maintain safe practices by abiding by all established policies and procedures for the skills- and simulation laboratories.
•    Contribute to the evaluation of students during skills and simulation activities as well as on other occasions by request.
•    Assist in the coordination of the annual simulation short learning programme (SimSLP) for health practitioners, working collaboratively with a team that includes staff from SHoRS and academic staff’s skills unit to plan and organise the event. (the person must be experienced in simulation to this work apart from assistance from lecturers).
•    Oversee the management of equipment and inventory in the skills and simulation laboratories. 
•    Ensure that all equipment is properly maintained and functioning. 
•    Address minor equipment issues in collaboration with the ICT team and report major malfunctions or breakages to the relevant stakeholder (the person must be trained in debriefing to be able to fulfil this duty).
•    Prepare the skills- and the simulation laboratories for scheduled learning activities – these include mannikin and equipment set-up and cleaning up afterwards.
•    Request quotations, order stock and consumables according to needs.
•    Manage voice recordings and video footage in a strictly confidential manner.
•    Integrate research and best practices into simulation-based education.
•    Liaise with suppliers to provide input regarding the acquisition of materials and technology necessary for teaching and learning.
•    Ensure a safe and tidy skills- and simulation laboratory environment.
•    Assist lecturing staff in executing clinical and simulation scenarios.
•    Maintain supervised scheduled laboratory hours as necessary to serve day, evening, and weekend student schedules.
•    Regularly update and maintain policies and procedure manuals for the skills- and simulation laboratories.
 
Inherent Job Requirements:
•    A Bachelor’s degree on NQF Level 8 or Bachelor’s degree on NQF Level 7 or Diploma on NQF Level 6 in Nursing.
•    Current Professional registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Nurse (General, Community, Psychiatric) and Midwifery.
•    Postgraduate qualification in any of the following specialities:
     o    Emergency Care /Critical Care Nursing/ Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment, Treatment and Care/ Advanced Medical and Surgical Nursing Science.
•    Postgraduate qualification in Nursing Education.
•    A minimum of five (5) years' experience in nursing (post-community service).
 
Recommendations:
•    A master's degree on NQF Level 9 in Nursing Science.
•    A minimum of two (2) years' relevant working experience relating to the duties and responsibilities in a higher education environment.
•    Experience with simulation as a teaching and learning strategy in nursing.

Job purpose
The primary function of the role is to attract, recruit, and retain academically deserving students for studies at the university while ensuring the achievement of enrolment targets. This includes the dissemination of recruitment information, execution of recruitment activities, and relationship building with internal stakeholders and external partners. Specifically, this role focuses on attracting students from diverse market segments, with an emphasis on underrepresented groups at the university.  
 
Duties and responsibilities:
    The responsibilities for this position will include, but are not limited to:
•    Develop, maintain, and implement recruitment strategies aligned with institutional objectives, contributing to the university’s Vision 130 as part of the Directorate’s team.
•    Visit identified schools' career exhibitions and engage with parents in the Western Cape Province to deliver presentations and disseminate recruitment information with a focus on identifying and recruiting top achievers from the targeted groups.
•    Explore and advise on possible markets for postgraduate initiatives.
•    Attend selected recruitment activities outside official office hours as per the Recruitment Plan and on request of the Director: Student Recruitment Services.
•    Engage with top achievers and their parents on and off campus to advise on career choices based on their academic achievement levels and career aspirations. 
•    Foster relationships with internal stakeholders, schools, community organisations, and other stakeholders to increase the recruitment of prospective students from underrepresented groups.
•    Provide advisory and reference services to prospective students.
•    Gather data analytics to inform recruitment decisions for discussions during the Directorate’s strategic planning sessions.
•    Identify, approve, and evaluate sponsorship opportunities, ensuring measurable return on investment.
•    Responsible for the financial management of the entities under your control.
•    Manage the use of the university assets allocated to you effectively. 

Inherent requirements:
•    A Bachelor’s degree or a B-Tech degree on NQF Level 7 in Marketing, Communication, Education, or Psychology (Counselling or Educational Psychology). 
•    A minimum of three (3) years of relevant working experience in the higher education sector (in Student Recruitment) or high school environment.
•    A proven track record of working with schools in the Western Cape province in Quintile 5, Quintile 99, and private schools
•    A valid driver’s license.
•    The candidate must be based in Cape Town.
 
Recommendations:
•    Three (3) years of relevant experience in higher education, especially in student recruitment/school liaison.
•    Honours degree on NQF Level 8 in Marketing, Communication, Education or Psychology (Counselling or Educational Psychology).
•    Knowledge of the higher education landscape and the high school environment, focusing on Quintile 5, Quintile 99, and private schools in the Western Cape Province. 
•    A clear understanding of how to communicate or engage with Gen Z.

Inherent requirements:
Lecturer

•    A Chartered Accountant (SA) holding a relevant NQF Level 8 qualification in Accountancy (contract appointment: five years during which a master’s on NQF Level 9 with specialisation in Accountancy MUST be obtained to be converted to a permanent position). 
•    A good academic record.
