Duties and responsibilities:

•    Conduct institutional research that supports planning, policy formulation, and decision-making.

•    Conduct analysis that improves our understanding of the external context within which the UFS is located (e.g., trends in state funding of higher education, policy shifts, and matric results).

•    Process research data into business intelligence by focusing on uniform data definitions, analyses, and the interpretation of information.

•    Contribute to research publications. 

•    Manage the administration of all research projects and stakeholder engagements.  

•    Engage in institutional strategic planning efforts, contributing to the formulation of the University's vision, mission, and deliverables.

•    Actively contribute to the University's strategic planning and quality assurance processes, including monitoring implementation, evaluating impact, and preparing relevant reports.

•    Participate in planning and team meetings within MIR and DIRAP.

•    Contribute to statutory reporting, including compilation of the annual report, annual performance plan, and mid-year reports. 

•    Liaise with relevant external bodies.

•    Fulfil all responsibilities regarding own performance management.

•    Assume responsibilities within the department that may arise spontaneously or as needed, in line with the Assistant Director-level appointment. 

 

Inherent requirements:

•    A Master's degree on NQF Level 9 in Higher Education or Education.  

•    A minimum of four (4) years of working experience related to the duties and responsibilities.

 

Recommendations: 

•    A PhD on NQF Level 10 in Higher Education or Education.

•    A minimum of five (5) years of work experience in the South African higher education environment.

•    Knowledge of university systems, policies, and procedures.

Description

Background and Context

As part of its Vision 130 strategy to position itself as a research-led, globally engaged university, the University of the Free State (UFS) is establishing four flagship Research Themes that define the areas in which the institution will demonstrate national leadership and global impact.

The Research Theme Leader is the leader of a Group: Planetary Health and Well-being, reflecting UFS’s commitment to advancing integrative, transdisciplinary research that links human, animal, and environmental health within the broader framework of the One Health and Planetary Health paradigms. The Research Theme Leader will provide strategic directions to mobilise expertise across the faculties of Health Sciences, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, and Humanities, ensuring that UFS becomes a recognised continental leader in health resilience, sustainability, and ecosystem well-being.

 

Key Responsibilities

​​​​​​​•    Provide Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a forward-looking research vision and roadmap that establishes UFS as a leading centre of excellence in planetary and One Health research. Position the theme within global networks such as the Planetary Health Alliance, BRICS Health Cooperation Framework, and relevant African Union and WHO initiatives.

•    Drive Interdisciplinary, Multidisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Research Excellence: Lead high-impact, cross-faculty research programmes addressing critical intersections between environment, health, and sustainability. Promote data-driven, evidence-based approaches to planetary health challenges, including climate change, food systems, zoonoses, and ecosystem degradation.

•    Advance Innovation and Societal Impact: Translate research into solutions that improve health outcomes, policy frameworks, and community resilience. Foster collaboration with government, industry, NGOs, and international organisations to influence health policy and environmental governance.

•    Secure Research Funding and Partnerships: Lead and coordinate competitive funding proposals to local and international agencies (NRF, DSI, NIH, WHO, EU Horizon, philanthropic foundations, etc.). Develop multi-stakeholder partnerships and manage sustainable funding portfolios to support long-term programme growth.

•    Capacity Development and Mentorship: Supervise postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows in planetary health and related domains. Build research capacity by mentoring emerging scholars, with a focus on diversity, inclusion, and interdisciplinary excellence.

•    Institutional Integration: Collaborate with other Research Theme Leaders and the Directorate Research Development (DRD) to ensure institutional coherence and strategic alignment. Represent UFS nationally and internationally in planetary health forums and policy dialogues.

 

Minimum Requirements

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​•    A PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., Environmental Health, Public Health, Epidemiology, Sustainability Science, Veterinary or Agricultural Science, Environmental Humanities, or related interdisciplinary fields).

•    Appointable at Associate or Full Professor level, based on the applicable UFS criteria for such appointments.

•    Proven leadership experience in managing interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research programmes or networks.

•    A strong publication record in planetary or One Health, environmental health, or sustainability science.

•    Demonstrated success in securing competitive external research funding.

•    Experience in stakeholder engagement across government, academia, civil society, and private sectors.

•    Excellent strategic planning, communication, and partnership-building skills.

 

Preferred / Advantageous Criteria

•    NRF-rated researcher or equivalent international recognition.

•    Experience in international research consortia or global health collaborations.

•    Expertise in health systems strengthening, climate-resilient development, or environmental governance.

•    Demonstrated capacity to link research to national and international policy frameworks (e.g., SDGs, AU Agenda 2063, WHO One Health Strategy).

Description

The University of the Free State (UFS) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship to join the Department of Animal Science. Candidates interested in pursuing an academic or professional career in Animal Breeding, with a focus on molecular genetics (including rumen microbiome dynamics) or quantitative genetics.

The fellowship provides the opportunity for a talented doctoral graduate to obtain experience of research and innovation at a higher education institution under the mentorship of established researchers.

The fellowship will be awarded on a competitive basis, considering the applicants' academic achievements, publication outputs and research potential, as well as the relevance of prior experience and expertise. The fellowship is available for a period of one year, renewable for up to three years, subject to satisfactory performance.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

•    Conduct innovative research in the following areas: Estimation of genetic parameters in livestock; Genome Wide Association Studies; Genetic Marker Analysis; Rumen Microbiome Diversity Analysis, Animal Production Trials.

•    Author/co-author at least three (3) publication outputs per year in the form of DHET– accredited scholarly journal articles or books/chapters in books. The renewal of the fellowship beyond the first year depends on satisfactory performance and the submission of an annual progress report.

•    Initiate projects and seek funding. 

•    Register and reside as postdoctoral research fellow at the UFS in Bloemfontein and participate in relevant activities of the Centre for Graduate Support and the Directorate of Research Development. 

 

Eligibility criteria

•    Open to all South African and foreign nationals for full-time research at the University of the Free State. 

•    Graduated with a PhD degree in a relevant discipline within the last five years 

•    Successful applicants may not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship. 

•    Successful applicants must be able to relocate to the UFS in Bloemfontein for the duration of the fellowship. This is a residential fellowship: the successful applicant is required to spend 80% of her/his postdoctoral period at the UFS. 

 

Value of the fellowship:

•    R 270,000 annual fellowship.

•    R30 000 additional research expenses fund

Client Support

Internal Reporting

Process Administration

Administrative Duties

Duties and responsibilities

Senior Lecturer

•    Provide supervision to postgraduate students (PGDip in Business Administration, MBA, and PhD students).

•    Lecture operations management (with demonstrated expertise in strategic supply chain management and the integration of AI in business operations, as strong recommendations) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

•    Conduct quality research in operations management and/or related disciplines such as supply chain management, the use of AI in operations, and business optimisation.

•    Create and present short-learning programmes (SLPs) in operations management and/or related disciplines such as supply chain management, the use of AI in operations, and business optimisation.

•    Perform academic administration pertaining to undergraduate and postgraduate subjects – this may include typing, setting and marking of all question papers and memorandums, recording of marks, and handling of student complaints.

•    Serve as a member of various academic committees, cluster leader, and perform any other tasks allocated by the Director.  

Associate Professor

•    Provide supervision to postgraduate students (PGDip in Business Administration, MBA, and PhD students).

•    Lecture operations management (with demonstrated expertise in strategic supply chain management and the integration of AI in business operations as strong recommendations) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

•    Lead the development and delivery of high-quality teaching and learning material, resources, and activities for undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including executive education programs and other related modules with articulation pathways, micro-credentials, and alignment to business and societal needs.

•    Conduct high-quality research in operations management and/or related disciplines such as supply chain management, the use of AI in operations, and business optimisation.

•    Create and present short-learning programmes (SLPs) in operations management and/or related disciplines such as supply chain management, the use of AI in operations, and business optimisation.

•    Participate in the development and programme enhancement for formal and executive education programmes and perform the role of cluster leader.

•    Participate in Business School consulting services to outside parties.

•    Perform academic administration pertaining to undergraduate and postgraduate subjects – this may include typing, setting and marking of all question papers and memorandums, recording of marks, and handling of student complaints.

Applicants interested in pursuing an academic career in Education Management and Leadership research are strongly encouraged to apply. The fellowship will enable an outstanding doctoral graduate to obtain experience of research, innovation, and community service at a higher education institution under the mentorship of established researchers.

The fellowship is awarded on a competitive basis, taking into account the applicants' academic achievements, research outputs and potential, as well as the relevance of his/her prior experience and expertise. The fellowship is available for a period of one year, renewable for up to three years subject to satisfactory performance.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

•    Conduct innovative research in the following areas: Education Management and Leadership; school violence and learner (in)discipline and obtain evidence- based empirical data on current developments in leadership and management practices of addressing school violence and learner (in)discipline within the South African context.

•    Author/co-author at least three (3) publication outputs per year in the form of DHET– accredited scholarly journal articles or books/chapters in books.

•    Initiate research projects and seek funding for them.

•    Do limited teaching in the Programmes where appropriate.

•    Provide limited supervision and/or co-supervision at Honour’s, master’s and/or Doctoral level where appropriate.

•    Register and reside as a postdoctoral research fellow at the UFS and participate in relevant activities in the Faculty of Education the School of Postgraduate Studies and the Directorate of Research Development.

 

Eligibility criteria

•    A PhD on NQF Level 10 with a focus on Education management and leadership.

•    Open to all South African and foreign nationals for full-time research at the University of the Free State.

•    The fellowship will terminate once your PhD degree reaches the fifth (5th) year of graduation.

•    Successful applicants may not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship

•    Successful applicants must be able to relocate to UFS for the duration of the fellowship. 

•    This is a residential fellowship: the successful applicant is required to spend 80% of her/his postdoctoral period at the UFS QwaQwa Campus.
