KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent responsibilities include but are not limited to: 
  • Providing operational, research and administrative laboratory support services for the research groups in the core FABI complex;
  • Contributing to strategic planning regarding molecular biology tools, bioinformatics and data management systems;
  • Training and mentorship of postgraduate students as well as visiting scientists and students;
  • Providing sustainable bioinformatics support and data management and analysis for the students and research projects;
  • Performing laboratory-based investigations by undertaking technical and experimental tasks.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • MSc in applicable Molecular Biology field with a minimum of 4 years of experience in the following:
    • Molecular Biology laboratory research;
    • Bioinformatics and Genomics research;
    • Research and data management.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES): 
  • Standard molecular biology laboratory techniques;
  • Next generation sequence data analysis scripts, programs and algorithms;
  • Ability to prepare technical reports related to molecular biology, bioinformatics and genomics research;

  • Expertise in NGS DNA and RNA sequence data management;

  • PhD in applicable Molecular Biology Field with specialisation in Bioinformatics and more than 4 years of experience in the following:

    • Competence in working with NGS data;
    • Training and capacity development experience.
  • Additional qualification in research/data management.

POSITION
The University seeks to appoint a Faculty Manager in the Dean’s Office. As part of the Faculty management team, the Faculty Manager will play an essential supportive role and assist the Dean in developing and managing strategic and operational initiatives of the Faculty and managing the risk register, as well as fulfilling other functions.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Support the Dean in leading and managing faculty-wide strategic projects to ensure alignment with institutional goals and timely delivery.
  2. Oversee risk management and compliance by identifying potential risks and ensuring adherence to university policies.
  3. Implement effective monitoring and evaluation systems to track progress and support data-driven decision-making.
  4. Coordinate daily faculty operations to ensure efficient workflow, resource use, and timely execution of initiatives.
  5. Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including government bodies, industry partners, and alumni.
  6. Support student engagement and well-being through collaboration with Student Affairs and incorporation of student feedback.
  7. Drive faculty transformation by implementing equity, diversity, and inclusion strategies across policies and programs.
  8. Oversee financial planning and ensure compliance with budgeting and expenditure regulations.
  9. Lead fundraising initiatives and secure external funding through donor engagement and strategic partnerships.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Educational Background:
  • A postgraduate qualification at NQF Level 8 or higher in Project Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, Education Management, or a closely related field.
Experience:
  • A minimum of five (5) years of proven experience in project coordination or management, preferably within a higher education or academic environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, risk management, monitoring and evaluation, and operational oversight.
  • Proven track record of stakeholder engagement, including managing partnerships, marketing efforts, fundraising, and alumni relations.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

Senior Lecturer:

  • Registered for a PhD or committed to acquiring a PhD within three years of appointment; and

Associate Professor:

Lecturer/SENIOR LECTURER:  WILDLIFE CLINICIAN

The Department seeks an experienced veterinarian to join our dynamic team tasked with enhancing wildlife productivity and welfare, community and environmental health. This person will focus on clinical services. Teaching and research in fields related to wildlife health.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:
  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in medicine, surgery and management of wildlife;
  • Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, surrounding community and satellite clinics, including participation in a 24-hour service;
  • Postgraduate training and supervision;
  • Research and publication in scientific journals;
  • Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
  • Community engagement;
  • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
  • Academic self-development.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lecturer:
  • A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
  • Registration with the SAVC at the time of appointment or eligibility for registration within a reasonable time;
  • A MSc-degree in Veterinary Science with the research topic related to wildlife Medicine; or at least 2 years of specialist training in wildlife by the time of appointment;
  •  Publication in wildlife medicine would be an added advantage.
 
Senior Lecturer:
  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • Registration as a Wildlife Specialist with the SAVC, or eligibility for immediate registration;
  • An appropriate MMedVet degree and/or equivalent specialty board certification;
  • At least 4 years’ full time experience in wildlife medicine and health;
  • Demonstrate the potential to become a competent lecturer at undergraduate and post graduate level;
  • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development;
  • Demonstrate strong potential to become an established researcher; and
  • At least two full research peer reviewed papers in ISI accredited scientific journals as first or senior author.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work;
  • Willingness to participate in extracurricular academic activities or events
  • Skills in herd or population level problem investigation, management interventions and consultation;
  • Research interest appropriate to the position;
  • Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain further postgraduate qualification in reasonable time;
  • Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; and
  • Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Experience with relevant specialised procedures, techniques and tools, e.g. software;
  • Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience; and
  • Exposure to research in an appropriate field.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
