RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Organising, developing and presenting practicals in genetics at undergraduate level in collaboration with the academic personnel;
- The academic administration and logistical coordination of undergraduate modules, including marking of assignments, tests and examinations and administration of the marks, as well as liaising with the registered students;
- Coordinating activities of the assigned tutors/demonstrators;
- Research support by assisting with financial and research administration;
- Actively contributing to the smooth day-to-day running of the Division of Genetics (and the Dept of BGM) by inter alia overseeing the general maintenance of facilities and equipment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- MSc with specialisation in Genetics (NQF level 9) or a closely related field;
- At least five (5) years’ relevant experience in academic administration of undergraduate modules, as well as in developing and presenting practicals/tutorials at tertiary level;
- At least five (5) years’ relevant experience in a research environment.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills, along with a student-centred mindset;
- Advanced subject-specific knowledge in genetics and molecular biology;
- Experience with the Blackboard eLearning Platform and the development of audio-visual learning materials;
- Experience in research administration, including laboratory management, basic accounting, experience in liaising with representatives of reagent and equipment supply companies, as well as good laboratory practices;
- Reliable, responsible, able to function efficiently under pressure, and work independently and in a team, while maintaining high levels of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality.

- Student and academic-related administration, including:

- Handling enquiries and correspondence and other student and academic administration;
- General typing and preparing of teaching material including tables and graphs and PowerPoint presentations;
- Capturing of marks;
- Assisting the department with general basic financial and facilities administration;
- Assisting the Head of Department with basic staff related administration;
- Administering the personnel information system, research information system and continuous professional development system;
- Organising departmental events and providing assistance with marketing functions; and
- Any other administrative functions as required by the Faculty.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Grade 12 and 4 years’ experience or a relevant 3-year National Diploma and 2 years’ experience in the following:
- General Administrative duties at an academic departmental level;
- Meeting coordination;
- Diary management;
- Undergraduate/postgraduate academic administration on departmental level; and
- Capturing and maintaining of records.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Advanced level of computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint, as well in the use of internet and e-mail (e.g. GroupWise);
- Appropriate language and communication skills with advanced writing skills;
- Strong interpersonal skills, highly organized and a keen commitment to excellence;
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
- Meticulous and the ability to maintain high level of discretion and confidentiality;
- Ability to work independently and participate effectively within a team;
- The ability to liaise and communicate effectively on all levels within the organization and with clients from diverse backgrounds and cultures;
- Meticulous with the capturing of student marks, publications, grants etc.; and
- Attention to detail.

- Overseeing the general maintenance of research facilities, as well as the setting up of new facilities and installations;
- Assisting with implementing and overseeing Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) within the departmental laboratory spaces;
- Asset management;
- Acting as on-call point person in case of the failure of critical equipment due to power or water outages, including after work hours;
- Management and disposal of laboratory waste (chemical, biological, and glassware);
- Research support by assisting with financial and research administration;
- Training postgraduate students and other laboratory users in basic and advanced laboratory techniques and apparatus usage;
- Serving as line manager for departmental messenger;
- Participating in departmental and Faculty committees and/or task teams.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- BSc degree in biochemistry or a related discipline;
- At least three (3) years’ proven experience in laboratory management within a tertiary education environment.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Experience in research administration, including laboratory management, basic accounting, experience in liaising with representatives of reagent and equipment supply companies, as well as good laboratory practices;
- Driver’s license;
- Ability to respond to emergencies outside of office hours;
- Advanced subject-specific knowledge in biochemistry and molecular biology.

- At least ten (10) publications in accredited journals relevant to the above fields;
- Evidence of successful supervision/co-supervision of Masters students or the mentoring of staff;

- Three (3) more years’ relevant tertiary teaching and curriculum development experience in Natural Resources and Environmental Economics;

- Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary Anaesthesiology;

JOB PURPOSE:
Take responsibility for the management, planning, provisioning, maintenance (installation, configuration, upgrade and patching), problem solving, availability, performance / monitoring, backups, disaster recovery and support (also after-hours) of the Oracle Weblogic-based Middleware software environments on which the University’s core enterprise applications rely, as well as the effective supervision of the Middleware Software Administrator subordinate.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Install and maintain Oracle middleware software infrastructure:
- Ensure that middleware software availability adheres to Service Level Agreements committed to by ITS Management;
- Compile installation and configuration documentation and guidelines to be used by subordinate;
- Install and configure Oracle middleware software;
- Maintain the development, test and production middleware environments by using the appropriate administration tools. This includes configurations, upgrades, patches, deploys, sizing and cloning of environments;
- Monitor and tune the development, test, and production middleware environments with regard to availability, performance and disk space;
- Set up and configure the required mechanisms for monitoring the middleware environments and pro-active alerting when systems are not available or are performing poorly, and respond to these alerts;
- Develop, test and implement processes required for ease of maintenance, monitoring of the middleware environments, and improving these environments (including automation of tasks where applicable);
- Ensure that the appropriate backup procedures are implemented by the database administrator and server system team for all relevant environments, and arrange regular testing of restores to ensure that environments can be recovered when necessary;
- Provide after-hours support to ITS Helpdesk and other ITS teams and users, with regard to the availability of the middleware environment, and perform after-hours maintenance tasks on the middleware environment, as required;
- Liaise with product vendors and use vendor information sources to resolve software problems and obtain information about new versions, upgrades, patches etc.;
- Attend relevant presentations, seminars, launches, workshops, and courses from vendors;
- Documentation and planning:
- Document installation, configuration and maintenance processes and working procedures to ensure a well-documented and well-managed Oracle middleware environment;
- Document the middleware architecture;
- Provide input to the compilation of policies related to the Oracle middleware environment;
- Assist the server team with the design, testing, implementation and maintenance of operating system infrastructure to meet business needs;
- Determine capacity requirements on the middleware environments;
- Do continuous research on new available software versions and compatibility between software, and make recommendations to management regarding viability of upgrades;
- Compile implementation plans for software upgrades and patches across development, test and production Oracle middleware environments;
- Support ITS Integration development team:
- Work on specific projects with Capability Development and the ITS Integration team;
- Support the ITS Integration team members with:
- Investigation on configurations of middleware products as may be required for addressing business requirements and/or performance issues, and to improve performance;
- Testing and/or performance testing of integration processes;
- Problem solving on integration process related problems;
- Coordination and planning of deployment of integration processes;
- Deploy integration processes to test and production environments by executing scripts as provided by the development team;
- Implement procedures to ensure well-managed version control on integration processes;
- Administration and adherence to standards, policies and procedures:
- Perform administrative duties e.g., filing, documenting, reporting, attending meetings etc.;
- Control the process of deploying software or software environment changes on production by opening and managing change control requests;

- Talent identification and recruitment of student-athletes (incl. any Junior programme initiatives).
- Implement and engage in fundraising initiatives of the club (incl. but not limited to clinics, workshops).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree or National Diploma
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in Netball coaching at a club/tertiary or provincial level
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in Netball coaching at a club/tertiary or provincial level
- Netball South Africa Level 2 Coaching Certificate or equivalent international accredited qualification.
