BACKGROUND:
The Department of Statistics at the University of Pretoria offers programs in Statistics to undergraduate and postgraduate students, mainly in two faculties, namely the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Science and the Faculty of Economic and Management Science. The Department also presents several service statistical modules and courses in many departments and faculties of the University of Pretoria.  Over the years, the Department of Statistics at the University has become a leading statistics department in learning and teaching in South Africa. It also pursues a research-intensive profile with expertise in a number of fields; including statistical theory and methodology, time series analysis, statistical data science, computational statistics and model-based clustering, and biostatistical methodology and application. We are looking to recruit a suitably qualified individual who will enhance and complement our vibrant and robust teaching and learning as well as our research portfolios 
The Department of Statistical has adopted several teaching and learning strategies using online and hybrid modes in addition to the traditional teaching modes.  We have enhanced our teaching programs to incorporate the very growing data science components. The department offers core modules, and it is expected from the incumbent to teach advanced-level statistical modules offered by the department. Thus, we are looking for an incumbent who will have an academic mandate including teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and supervising postgraduate students. The research mandate also requires an active research program, producing accredited academic research outputs, and conference presentations. It will also be expected from the incumbent to build a strong internationally acclaimed research program.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses; 
  • Mentoring and supervising postgraduate students; 
  • Actively conducting independent and collaborative research and publishing research outputs in accredited journals; 
  • Developing and/or expanding collaboration with academics internationally; 
  • Initiating and delivering specialist courses at national and international levels; 
  • Actively participating in administrative duties within the Department. 
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lecturer:
  • A Master’s degree in Statistics that includes a credit-bearing research dissertation and credit-bearing coursework consisting of core components that align with the required responsibilities of the incumbent; 
  • An indication of an emerging research career with evidence of accredited publications in core components of the discipline contributing to the literature and scientific field of statistics; at least one recent publication in statistics in an accredited peer viewed journal; 
  • Enrolled for a PhD degree in Statistics with proof of significant progress with the study; 
  • Evidence of papers presented at national conferences; 
  • Proven competency and experience are required in:
    • Teaching statistics modules and courses at both undergraduate postgraduate levels as a lecturer; 
    • Advanced knowledge of at least one major statistical software programming language; 
    • Implementation of efficient teaching models that would be applicable in the university setting.
Senior Lecturer (Same as for Lecturer, plus):
  • A Doctoral degree in Statistics
  • Proven record of curriculum development at the undergraduate and postgraduate level or other specialized professional courses; 
  • Evidence of papers presented at national and international conferences; 
  • Proven research publications in accredited journals, of which at least two in the mainstream statistical journals
  • Proven practice of advanced fundamental and applied statistical methodology.
  • Proven record of supervision of postgraduate statistical students 
  • Evidence of supporting and participating in academic citizenship.

  • Recognized by peers as a scholar of high academic standing.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
In addition to the minimum requirements, the following will be an advantage.
Lecturer and Senior Lecturer:
  • Evidence of the relevance, impact and contribution of current research projects to the discipline of Mathematical Statistics/Statistics
  • Coordinating and teaching large classes of statistics service courses as well as core statistical modules.
Senior Lecturer:
  • An NRF rating.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent is expected to perform the following duties. Please note that the below provides a high-level overview and may not include all related functions that may be required.
  • Assisting in identifying potential participants for the study by reviewing eligibility criteria and conducting initial screening;
  • Keeping detailed and accurate records of all recruited participants, noting their contact information, eligibility status, consent and any interactions related to their enrolment in the study;
  • Scheduling appointments or following up on communication to officially enrol participants in the study;
  • Conducting interviews with participants;
  • Transcribing of interview data, taking care to capture participants' responses verbatim;
  • Assisting in the creation of easy-to-understand materials (e.g., flyers, posters, or digital presentations) that explain the purpose and process of the research study to participants in the waiting room;
  • Conducting brief informational sessions or discussions with participants in the waiting room;
  • Utilising the electronic data management systems (such as REDCap) for capturing and managing data for research projects;
  • Reviewing data entries for accuracy and completeness, identifying errors or inconsistencies, and rectifying them as needed;
  • Attending all relevant training sessions and meetings to discuss progress and any challenges related to the research study and
  • Working collaboratively with team members addressing and resolving evolving issues related to the study.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Relevant National 3 year Diploma with 5 years of experience in a research environment OR;
  • Grade 12 with 10 years of experience in a research environment; 
  • Successful applicants must be willing to work in the following areas: Atteridgeville, Cullinan, Mamelodi or Vlakfontein
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Proficiency in maternal and child health;
  • Proficiency in writing, communication and people skills;
  • Proficiency in the use of databases and data management software, e.g. REDCap;
  • Computer Literate and proficiency in MS Office packages, email and the internet;
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Driver’s Licence with own vehicle;
  • Bachelor’s Degree with 2 years of experience in a research environment;
  • Valid Good Clinical Practice Training;
  • Neurodevelopment screening experience (e.g. Bayley Assessment Tool);
  • Experience in anthropometric measurements;
  • Experience in conducting interviews about infant feeding and dietary intake.

The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Lecture at undergraduate and postgraduate level on the Hatfield, Groenkloof and / or Mamelodi Campuses;
  • Provide academic leadership as a teacher, researcher and manager;
  • Conduct research in at least one of the departmental research focus areas (including Mathematics of Finance) and / or initiate a new research direction that lead to publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals;
  • Supervise postgraduate students;
  • Establish international partnerships and linkages;
  • Be responsible for fundraising relating to academic research;
  • Participate in departmental administration and managerial work;
  • Participate in community engagement.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A PhD degree in Mathematics and / or Applied Mathematics;
  • Experience as an independent researcher at an international level, based on a recent body of quality work within the field that attests to on-going engagement;
  • Excellent teaching experience in learning facilitation, subject mastery, curriculum development, development of learning materials and assessment techniques;
  • Proven experience in supervising Master’s or PhD students to completion.
