RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Overseeing the general maintenance of research facilities, as well as the setting up of new facilities and installations;
  • Assisting with implementing and overseeing Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) within the departmental laboratory spaces;
  • Asset management;
  • Acting as on-call point person in case of the failure of critical equipment due to power or water outages, including after work hours;
  • Management and disposal of laboratory waste (chemical, biological, and glassware);
  • Research support by assisting with financial and research administration;
  • Training postgraduate students and other laboratory users in basic and advanced laboratory techniques and apparatus usage;
  • Serving as line manager for departmental messenger;
  • Participating in departmental and Faculty committees and/or task teams.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • BSc degree in biochemistry or a related discipline;
  • At least three (3) years’ proven experience in laboratory management within a tertiary education environment.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Experience in research administration, including laboratory management, basic accounting, experience in liaising with representatives of reagent and equipment supply companies, as well as good laboratory practices;
  • Driver’s license;
  • Ability to respond to emergencies outside of office hours;
  • Advanced subject-specific knowledge in biochemistry and molecular biology.

  • Experience with PeopleSoft’s Human Capital Management System, as well as the Financial and Enterprise Request Systems;

RESPONSIBILITIES:
It will be expected of the successful candidates to:
  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the Department;
  • Supervise final year undergraduate project students and postgraduate Honours, Masters and PhD students;
  • Conduct research as a member of a research group in the Department and publish in leading accredited journals;
  • Raise and manage additional funding from national and international funding agencies and industry to support the activities of the relevant research group;
  • Expand existing research programmes or initiate new research programmes;
  • Perform assigned departmental duties (e.g. of an administrative nature).
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
 
Lecturer:
  • A BEng degree from a university of which the undergraduate programme is recognised by the Washington accord or is recognised by ECSA to be equivalent;
  • A Masters’ degree in Engineering that follows on the previous qualification;
  • Teaching or industry related experience
  • 1 Publication (peer reviewed article or peer reviewed conference paper) or
  • Book chapter(s), recognized articles outputs or industry recognized outputs in a commensurate field.
  • Expertise and research experience in one or more of the following specialist electronic or computer engineering research areas in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering:
    • Advanced Sensor Networks: Internet of Things (IoT), sensing and communication technologies, machine learning, data security, big data information processing and analytics, cyber-physical systems, smart grid, intelligent transportation technologies;
    • Electronics and Microelectronics: analogue and digital electronics, integrated circuit design, integrated sensors, printed electronics, RF and mm-wave electronics and optoelectronics;
    • Signals, Information Fusion and Communications: cloud computing, 5G deployment, terahertz communication, VLC, Spread-spectrum systems.
    • Bioengineering: neuro-prosthetics, medical imaging, computer modelling, computational neuroscience, computational physiology.
    • Control systems: model-based control and optimisation in the process industries, model-based control of disease networks.
    • Intelligent Systems: AI, robotic perception, motion planning, human-robot interaction, autonomous systems, adaptive and learning systems.
    • Smart Sensing and Information Processing: applications in transportation, health care, environmental systems, agriculture, water management, mining, animal sciences, smart homes and cities, and industrial systems. 
 
Senior Lecturer:
  • Same as for Lecturer, plus;
  • A PhD degree in Engineering that follows on the previous qualification;
  • At least three years tertiary education experience or three years industry experience with some involvement in tertiary education;
  • At least 2 articles published in DHET accredited journals or a DHET accredited book;
  • At least 2 other publication outputs (peer reviewed conference paper(s) / book chapter(s) / industry recognized outputs in a commensurate field;
  • Supervision / co-supervision of Master’s students to completion or proven management experience in industry.

  • Preference will be given to candidates who have teaching and research expertise that complement the Department’s needs;
  • Related industry work or consulting experience;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Associate Professor:
  • Relevant PhD degree in Pasture Science or a related discipline with a relevant BSc or BSc (Agric) degree that included Pasture Science or Rangeland Management/Ecology module content;
  • Five (5) years teaching experience at undergraduate level;
  • Experience in undergraduate curriculum development;
  • Postgraduate supervision as main supervisor of at least one graduated PhD student, and three graduated MSc students in a relevant field;
  • Research output, research skills and/or a proven record of research publications in accredited journals or presentation in local and international conferences as appropriate for the relevant level of appointment, specifically, in the field of pasture science or rangeland management/ecology;
  • Evidence of successful multi-year international research grant funding applications;
  • NRF rating (at least at Established Researcher level) or equivalent research standing.
Senior Lecturer: 
  • Relevant PhD degree in Pasture Science or in a related discipline with a relevant BSc or BSc (Agric) degree that included Pasture Science or Rangeland Management/Ecology module content;
  • Two (2) years teaching experience at undergraduate level;
  • Evidence of postgraduate supervision as main supervisor of at least one graduated Masters student in a relevant field;
  • Research output, research skills and/or a proven record of research publications in accredited journals or presentation in local conferences as appropriate for the relevant level of appointment, specifically, in the field of pasture science or rangeland management/ecology;
