RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in veterinary pathology;
  • Experiential training of undergraduate and postgraduates in veterinary diagnostic pathology;
  • Preparation, presentation and review of course material;
  • Lectures, seminars and tutorials, evaluation of students, student support and participation in curriculum improvement and development;
  • Diagnostic necropsy and biopsy duties on a rotational basis;
  • Active participation in departmental research programmes;
  • Service rendering to developing communities and continuing education programmes; and;
  • Administrative and management tasks as delegated by the Head of Department.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lecturer:
  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • MMedVet (Path) degree from the University of Pretoria to be completed within a reasonable time of appointment; 
  • Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a veterinarian; 
  • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio;
  • Strong interest in research and potential to become an established specialist researcher; and
  • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development.
 
Senior Lecturer: 
  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • MMedVet (Path) degree from the University of Pretoria OR a European/ American Board-Certified degree in veterinary pathology (ECVP / ACVP); 
  • Registered or amenable to be authorized with the SAVC
  • At least 2 years’ experience in diagnostic veterinary pathology laboratory/ institution; and
  • At least two peer-reviewed paper in the field of veterinary pathology in an accredited scientific journal as senior or co-author.
 
Associate Professor:
  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • MMedVet (Path) degree from the University of Pretoria OR a European/ American Board-Certified degree in veterinary pathology (ECVP / ACVP); 
  • Registered or amenable to be authorized with the SAVC;
  • Five years’ experience as a specialist in veterinary pathology;
  • At least five full peer reviewed papers in accredited scientific journals as senior or co-author;
  • A record of previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience;
  • Successful supervision of Masters students;
  • The ability to attract independent research funding;
  • Participatory membership of professional bodies; and
  • Evidence of academic scholarship and professional national recognition.
 
Professor:
  • An appropriate PhD-degree; 
  • Registered or amenable to be authorized with the SAVC;
  • Significant national and international professional recognition;
  • Substantial experience in research, supported by a sustained record and impact of publications in national and international accredited journals with focus on Veterinary Pathology;
  • A record of previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience;
  • Successful supervision of several students on Masters, PhD and post-doctoral level;
  • Proof of the ability to attract independent research funding;
  • Participatory membership of professional bodies;
  • Evidence of exceptional academic scholarship;
  • Evidence of community engagement; and
  • Experience in field-based research.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES FOR ALL POSTS (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Proven knowledge and competence in pathology;
  • Research interest appropriate to the position;
  • Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain further postgraduate qualification   in reasonable time;
  • Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
  • Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation, word processing, spreadsheet and social networking skills; and
  • Critical thinking ability.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Lecturing experience in veterinary pathology; 
  • Employment at an academic institution or research facility; and 
  • Laboratory experience in the field of immunohistochemistry. 
 
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

JOB PURPOSE:
The incumbent will provide assistance as required by the line manager in his/ her five KPAs namely:
(i)  To ensure systematic collection and preparation of Foundation Programmes (FPs) data;
(ii) To strengthen the Data Analytics capability of the Foundation Programmes (FPs); 
(iii) To assist with research and support activities; 
(iv) To support the Turnaround Strategy Steering Committee; 
(v)  To develop personal capacity for data analytics.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Systematic collection and preparation of data:
  • Collate data from all offerings and activities of the FPs using clickUP, HEDA and Power BI (any dashboard used by the university) by supporting staff at the early stages of their data collection planning process;
  • Clean and prepare all collected data for reporting purposes;
  • Generate necessary secondary data emanating from all offering and activities around FPs;
  • Strengthen the Data Analytics Capability of the Foundation Programmes (FP’s):
  • Implement new system requirements, and update current functionalities when needed;
  • Ensure analysis reports/results are ready and available for the FPs reporting cycles;
  • Support the Head of Academic Programmes in advancing the data analytics capabilities/management within the FPs;
  • Assist the Head of Academic Programmes in supporting the campus online learning agenda through providing clickUP and dashboards-related training where needed;
  • Research and support activities:
  • Assist the FPs management team in writing appropriate contributions to research and management work in line with research unit outputs;
  • Support research by providing data collection and analysis services to ensure the success of FPs students;
  • Turnaround strategy:
  • Perform analysis and background studies on the performance of the students in the FPs;
  • Generate and provide reports on the FPs in line with the proposals when needed;
  • Customising BI dashboard for managing and evaluating the Turnaround Strategy;
  • Identify gaps in the data collected to support the proposals;
  • Assist with the implementation activities as identified in the turnaround strategies. 
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A Bachelor of Science Mathematical Statistics; or a Bachelor of Information Technology/Science; or a Bachelor of Commerce in Informatics (Information Systems); WITH
  • Two years’ experience in:
    • Working with data and business intelligence tools;
    • An academic environment and development of E-learning material; 
    • The development of online tools.
