RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Preparation of sequencing libraries for all samples to be sequenced on the Oxford Nanopore Technologies platform (ONT);
- Loading of flow cells and setting up of the PromethION and MinION Instruments to analyse the prepared samples, as well as running and monitoring the instruments;
- Accurate sample quality control before and during library preparation and sequencing;
- Accurate recording and reporting of all laboratory procedures, as well as reagents and consumables used during the workflow for each sample processed;
- Proper storage and handling of all samples, reagents and consumables at all times;
- Careful management of reagent and consumable levels, and timely order requisition for all required reagents and consumables;
- Assisting with data management on sequencing computers;
- Cleaning and setting up of all equipment used in the ONT workflow;
- General laboratory maintenance of the UPGL laboratories. This includes very strict contamination control in potential cross contamination hotspots;
- Communication with clients regarding their samples and progress of the workflow when required;
- Assisting in basic project planning;
- DNA isolations for method development projects of the UPGL;
- Keeping up to date with the latest development in the ONT community and the NGS space in general;
- Optimising new protocols when required;
- Own time management within allocated project delivery times;
- Deliver good quality data on time;
- Active contribution in workshops hosted by the UPGL.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- BSc (Hons) in a Biological Sciences discipline with MSc exam copies submitted for examination;
- At least two (2) years’ experience in Molecular Biology obtained during postgraduate studies.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Proficient in common molecular biology techniques:
- Accurate pipetting;
- DNA isolation for NGS sequencing;
- PCR;
- DNA ligation;
- DNA electrophoresis;
- DNA QC;
- Meticulous attention to detail with good documentation skills;
- Proven troubleshooting skills in molecular biology;
- A self-motivated person with the ability to manage time effectively;
- Must be reliable and must have the ability to work accurately while under pressure;
- Must have the ability to troubleshoot potential problems in the ONT sequencing workflow;
- Good interpersonal relationship skills;
- Proven competency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- MSc in a Biological Sciences discipline;
- Extensive practical experience in DNA based molecular biology techniques;
- Presentation at workshops and training events;
- Previous NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) library building and DNA sequencing experience;
- Experience in high molecular weight DNA isolation.

The Department seeks an experienced veterinarian to join our dynamic team tasked with enhancing small stock/flock health management. This person will focus on the teaching, providing services and research in Flock health.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:
- Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students (including special emphasis on small stock/flock health management);
- Clinical and herd/flock health services through the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, surrounding community and satellite clinics, including participation in a 24-hour service; The successful candidate will be expected to actively recruit additional clientele to fulfil this mandate;
- Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate;
- Research and publication in scientific journals;
- Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
- Community engagement – participation and supporting student activities;
- Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
- Academic self-development.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lecturer:
- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinarian;
- Must be registered or willing to register in 2024 for Masters programme – MMedVet degree in Small stock flock health or MSc veterinary science (if the latter then with a relevant production animal focus), and be able to graduate in reasonable time;
- Clinical experience predominantly in Ruminant medicine and Flock health aspects; and
- Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development.
Senior Lecturer:
- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- An appropriate MMedVet-degree and/or equivalent specialty board certification in Ruminant medicine particularly in Small stock field;
- Registration with the SAVC as a specialist;
- Minimum of five years of veterinary clinical experience with at least three years’ experience in predominantly Ruminant medicine and Flock health aspects; and
- At least two full research paper of which one can be a case report in an accredited scientific journal as senior author (NB: Case study involves the descriptive outcome or one of more clinical cases; and
- Teaching experience is recommended.
- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- MSc degree with particular focus on production animal aspects;
- Registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian;
- Minimum of five years of veterinary clinical experience with at least three years’ experience in predominantly Ruminant medicine and Flock health aspects post acquiring a Master’s degree;
- Five or more research-based full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author and/or co-author in the last five years. The research should be focused towards a particular subject area (e.g. specific disease or condition) and not be broad; and
- Teaching experience is recommended.
Associate Professor:
- A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- An MMedVet (Ruminant Medicine and Flock Health)-degree or equivalent specialty board certification currently registered or registerable with the SAVC;
- Five years of veterinary clinical experience as a specialist in Flock health management;
- At least five full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author or co-author in the last five years. The research should be focused towards a particular subject area (e.g. specific disease or condition) and not be broad); and
- Teaching experience at undergraduate and post graduate level;
- A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- MSc degree and a PhD with particular focus on production animals. In exceptional cases: MSc with significant professional recognition (supported by both national and international peer reviews);
- Registered or registerable with the SAVC;
- At least seven years of veterinary clinical experience as a specialist in Flock health management;
- Ten or more research-based full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author and/or co-author, with five of these publications being in the last three years; and
- Teaching experience at undergraduate and post graduate level;
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work with an emphasis on ruminant herd health aspects;
- Research interest appropriate to the position;
- Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain a PHD in reasonable time in a field relative to the discipline of ruminant/small stock flock health;
- Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; and
- Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.

- Demonstrate strong potential to become an established researcher; and
- Registered for MMedVet or MSc (Toxicology) and committed to acquiring a Master’s degree within two years of appointment.
- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
- Registration (or registrable) as a Veterinarian with SAVC;
- Master’s degree in toxicology or a related field;
- Registered for PhD or committed to acquiring a PhD within three years of appointment;
- Five or more ISI accredited research-based full papers in accredited scientific journals as senior author and/or co- author; and
- Teaching experience at undergraduate level.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES FOR BOTH LEVELS (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Proven knowledge and competency in toxicology;
- Research interest appropriate to the position;
- Candidates without a MSc or PhD: Commitment to obtain a further postgraduate qualification in a reasonable time;
- Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
- Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation, word-processing, spreadsheets and social networking skills.
- Critical thinking ability.

- Experience in grantsmanship;

- Registration/authorisation with the SAVC as a Veterinarian;

- Four years veterinary experience with three years’ experience in predominantly Clinical Pathology.

JOB PURPOSE:
The purpose of the job is to oversee critical processes and various teams, including the Call Centre and General Enquiries. RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Management, planning and decision making:
- Manage and optimise resources, including financial, human, and technological resources, to ensure operational effectiveness and efficiency;
- Develop and implement strategic and operational plans and initiatives to support organisational objectives and adapt to changing environments and client needs;
- Conduct regular analysis and reporting to track performance, identify trends, and inform decision-making processes to drive positive outcomes;
- Manage any service disruptions and adapt to sudden changes in the environment to minimise the impact on operations and clients, upholding the University’s reputation;
- Identify security threats, and in collaboration with Security Services, make timely decisions regarding safety and security measures such as evacuation, ensuring the well-being of personnel, students, and clients in the SSC building;
- Identify and rectify operational issues, ensuring adherence to University policies and regulations;
- Cultivate and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders;

Human Resources management:
- Ensure compliance with HR policies and procedures during recruitment, selection, and personnel management;
- Lead, manage, and motivate the User Support Team, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to foster collaboration and accountability;
- Recruit, appoint and schedule personnel complement (including full-time staff, temporary workers, and interns) to maintain service continuity;
- Manage and maintain a performance management system to develop and enhance the performance of individuals, teams, and the division, thus contributing to the performance of the division;
- Provide guidance to staff to enhance their individual output and quality criteria, and establish and maintain formal procedures to ensure that individual staff members are utilised optimally;
- Communicate the formulated UP policies with the staff, contract appointments and consultants, and ensure their adherence to them;
- Manage the complete process of the recruitment, selection, and placement of staff;
- Provide learning and development opportunities to staff members, according to organisational and individual needs, through the development of a personnel development programme and according to succession planning principles;
- Attend to grievances according to prescribed Grievance Procedure guidelines;

Financial management:
- Compile divisional personnel, capital, and operational budgets on an annual basis;
- Manage divisional funds according to University policy;
- Manage annual budgets and control income and expenditure through monthly reports;
- Manage and guide contractual agreements with service providers;
- Ensure all payments made for the SSC to issue academic records are correctly allocated to the appropriate cost centre, and follow up with the Department of Finance on any misallocated payments to prevent loss of funds;
- Collaborate with the Finance Department to manage and authorise refunds related to study applications fees;

Service excellence and monitoring:
- Provide excellent service across all divisional interaction channels, including walk-in, telephone, and email inquiries at the Call Centre and General Enquiries centre;
- Conduct quality assurance by monitoring and reviewing call recordings and email communications to assess service quality and adherence to University policies;
- Implement quality assurance standards and procedures to maintain high service levels across both phone and email interactions;
- Collaborate with other departments to address cross-functional issues and improve overall service delivery;
- Promote the University's brand reputation by developing and executing strategies within the division to provide customer service experiences, and maintaining quality service standards in alignment with organisational objectives;
- Implement University regulations, policies, and departmental processes to ensure that client interactions are managed according to these guidelines;
- Oversee the User Support Unit that attends to requests for password resets from students, personnel, and alumni, following University and ITS policies and business rules;
- Ensure that the User Support Unit issues official university documents in compliance with University policies, rules, and regulations, including adherence to the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA);
- Measure and report on client satisfaction levels by collecting and analysing customer feedback through surveys and direct interactions, providing feedback to relevant stakeholders to continually improve service delivery;
- Conduct routine inspections in the SSC Foyer and Call Centre to adhere to UP branding protocols as well as Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards;

Projects:
- Manage special SSC projects in collaboration with the management and project team, plan and set objectives, timelines, and resource requirements;
- Allocate personnel, equipment, and materials to ensure project or event success;
- Monitor project progress, identify gaps and develop strategies to mitigate them, ensuring smooth project execution;

Technology and systems:
- Ensure optimal functionality of all systems within the division's portfolio and those supported for clients;
- Collaborate with Information Technology Services and other departments to integrate new technologies that enhance service delivery;
- Address system-related issues as per timelines, ensuring consultants are trained in first-level troubleshooting;
- Ensure compliance with data security and privacy by collaborating with ITS, and providing personnel training on best practices;

Administration:
- Oversee and manage the receipt and removal of hold for enrolment contracts;
- Manage escalations for academic records of financially unsuitable students to be sent to third parties;
- Verify compliance with University policies, procedures and POPIA legal requirements before releasing the records;
- Manage financial holds on student records;
- Collaborate with the communications office to ensure the timely updating of information on the UP website, UP letters, social media platforms, and publications;
- Continuously monitor and enhance administrative processes as required to ensure efficiency and effectiveness;

Access control and parking:
- Ensure consultants have a comprehensive understanding of access-related policies, business rules, client categories, and security protocols;
- Manage the issuing of access cards, procurement process for access cards, card holders, consumables, and parking discs and stickers, recognising the significant financial investment involved;
- Manage stock levels of access cards, parking discs and related items across all campuses, ensuring an adequate supply;
- Monitor usage to prevent wastage or loss.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Relevant Bachelors/BTech degree; WITH
- A total of three years’ experience in the following roles/environments, one of which must at least be in management:
- Administration;
- A Client Service environment, including Customer Relationship Management (CRM);

- Ability to train student psychologists and supervise their practical work;
