RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be expected to:
  • Engage in teaching, curriculum development, and co-ordination of modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Supervise postgraduate research commensurate with the post level;
  • Supervise practical work in the MA (Counselling Psychology) programme, commensurate with the post level;
  • Conduct research commensurate with the level of appointment and actively contribute to the Department’s research profile;
  • Perform various academic and administrative duties as determined by the Head of Department;
  • Participate in the Department’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching, research, and community engagement;
  • Contribute to transdisciplinary engagements in teaching and research.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • A Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology;
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Counselling Psychologist;
  • Ability to lecture student psychologists in at least one of the following modalities: psychodynamic psychotherapy, narrative therapy, person-centred therapy, and/or group therapy;
  • Evidence of research productivity (e.g., conference presentations; publications in peer-reviewed journals or equivalent; significant progress in PhD studies).
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Professional practice experience as a Counselling Psychologist;
  • Ability to train student psychologists;
  • Ability to lecture in at least two, but preferably more, of the following areas on undergraduate level: introductory psychology, biological psychology, cognitive psychology, psychological assessment, social psychology, developmental psychology, community psychology, critical psychology;
  • Demonstrated research focus, preferably aligned with departmental thematic areas.

  • Registration with the HPCSA as a Counselling Psychologist for three years or more;
  • Experience in lecturing on undergraduate level;
  • Experience in lecturing or professional training at the postgraduate (MA) level;
  • A doctoral degree.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

 THE INCUMBENT WILL BE RESPONSIBLE TO:
  • Provide input into the development of relevant strategic solutions for the effective management of Employee Relations and Wellness in the workplace.;
  • Provide input into the development of the annual departmental implementation plan and calendar;
  • Ensure the division achieves its targets as indicated in the HR strategic and business plan relevant to the division;
  • Provide progress reports and analysis of the division's performance to the line manager as required;
  • Ensure compliance to legislation, regulations and national policy directives applicable to the Human Resources function;
  • Assist the line manager to operationalize the HR Strategic Plan in the division;
  • Ensure all in the section are fully informed of the Divisional targets;
  • Provide input in designing, developing and implementing divisional policies, guidelines and procedures;

  • Provide leadership in the section by modelling a high-performance culture and enhancing the HR Department and division’s professional image;

  • Ensure proper support to line management throughout the dispute resolution processes by advising and proposing resolution strategies;
  • Represent the University on complex and high calibre cases at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), Bargaining Councils, Mediations, grievances, disciplinary and incapacity hearings;
  • Ensure that the University Management is provided with sound internal or external legal advice on all labour matters;
  • Ensure that all corporate labour activities are in line with applicable laws;
  • Develop, review and advise on institutional ER policies from a labour law perspective;
  • Provide legal support to collective bargaining and engagement structure by providing sound legal advice pertaining to relevant issues.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Honours degree in Labour Law, Labour Relations, LLB or relevant field
  • A total of 6 years (of which 2 years in management) of:
    • Employment relations experience in a unionised environment;
    • Specialist experience in labour law if currently a practising attorney, Advocate or Labour Consultant;
    • Experience representing management at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) either as a representative or Commissioner.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • LLM, MBA or any relevant Master’s degree;
  • A total of 3 years higher education experience;
  • Registration with a recognized professional body including Law Society or Advocate Chambers (desirable).

  • Some teaching experience in a tertiary environment.
Senior Lecturer (Same as for Lecturer, plus):
  • Substantial teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels;
  • Potential to be established as an independent researcher in the near future based on a recent body of work.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
Preference will be given to candidates with strong interest in applied and numerical analysis, ordinary and partial differential equations, dynamical systems, or mathematical modelling.
Lecturer:
  • Research experience based on a recent body of work beyond the PhD thesis;
  • Substantial teaching experience in a tertiary environment.
Senior Lecturer:
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels;
  • Experience in the supervision of postgraduate students;
  • Established as an independent researcher based on a recent body of work.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
