LECTURER
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
The incumbent will be expected to:
  • Teach academic literacy in different university faculties;
  • Contribute to curriculum design in the UAL;
  • Coordinate academic literacy courses offered in different faculties;
  • Conceptualize and conduct scholarly research in fields related to academic literacy;
  • Write and publish articles in accredited (and preferably high-impact) journals;
  • Present research at local and international conferences;
  • Participate in generating third-stream income for the UAL;
  • Perform academic administration and management;
  • Participate in other departmental activities (e.g., seminars, colloquia, and symposia;
  • Supervise/co-supervise Honours and Master’s students;
  • Collaborate with academic staff in the new School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures;
  • Perform other duties as delegated by the Director of UAL.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • A Master’s degree in Applied Language Studies, Applied Linguistics, or English for Academic Purposes;
  • At least three (3) years of teaching experience in academic literacy in English or English for academic purposes at a recognised higher education institution;
  • Experience of hybrid (computer-aided) teaching methodologies;
  • Evidence of at least two publications in accredited journals or equivalent recognised outputs and local/international conference presentations.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Excellent academic writing and reading skills;
  • Excellent oral communication skills;
  • Mentoring skills;
  • Knowledge of key theoretical principles that underpin the teaching of academic literacy in the South African higher education (HE) context;
  • Knowledge of new research and research shifts in the field of academic literacy in the South Africa HE context;
  • Ability to manage and lecture large classes;
  • Ability to assess students using different assessment modes and to provide constructive feedback;
  • Ability to work effectively in teams;
  • Ability to use Learning Management Systems (LMS) such Blackboard/ClickUp to teach and assess student projects.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES OR PREFERENCES
  • A doctoral degree (PhD), or significant progress toward such, in an area of work related to the teaching and assessment of academic literacy;
  • Ability to communicate fluently in Sepedi or isiZulu.
 
SENIOR LECTURER/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
The incumbent will be expected to:
  • Teach academic literacy at undergraduate level in different faculties;
  • Teach at postgraduate level (Honours and Master’s), possibly across disciplines and allied departments in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures;
  • Design curricula, study materials and assessments for undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the UAL;
  • Coordinate academic literacy courses offered in different faculties;
  • Coordinate UAL’s tutorial programmes;
  • Write and publish consistently in accredited (and preferably high-impact) journals;
  • Facilitate academic writing workshops to postgraduate students across different faculties;
  • Present research at local and international conferences;
  • Generate third-stream income for the UAL and faculty;
  • Independently conceptualize and lead research projects;
  • Perform academic administration and management;
  • Organize and participate in other departmental activities such as seminars, colloquia, and symposia;
  • Participate in curriculum transformation/decolonization in the UAL;
  • Mentor junior academic staff and postdoctoral fellows;
  • Participate in promoting multilingualism in the UAL; 
  • Participate in committee work in the faculty/institution;
  • Establish research/teaching collaborations with other universities in South Africa, Africa, and beyond;
  • Supervise/co-supervise Honours, Master’s, and doctoral students;
  • Participate in community projects;
  • Perform other duties as delegated by the Director of UAL.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • A doctoral degree (PhD) in Applied Language Studies, Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, or English for Academic Purposes from a recognised tertiary institution;
  • At least 5-8 years of teaching experience in academic literacy in English, English for academic purposes, or academic communication at a higher education institution;
  • Evidence of successful supervision of Master’s and doctoral students (senior lecturer at least 4 postgraduate students and associate professor at least 8 postgraduate students);  
  • Applicants for the associate professorship must have at least a C3 NRF rating;
  • Evidence of publications in high-impact accredited journals or equivalent recognised outputs (senior lecturer: 5-8 published outputs and associate professor: 12-16 published outputs);
  • Evidence of local/international conference presentations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology requires the services of a dynamic person of proven academic stature and relevant management experience to lead the Department of Engineering and Technology Management. The Department's main focus is on postgraduate studies and research is a main priority.
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
  • Promoting, planning, organizing and managing academic and research programmes and the Department’s research profile;
  • Recruiting and managing of world-class personnel;
  • All financial activities, including externally funded projects;
  • Playing an active role as an academic leader of the discipline at a national and international level;
  • Marketing and growing the Department with an emphasis on growth at the graduate level.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Associate Professor:
  • A BSc / BScEng / BEng degree;
  • A relevant Masters’ degree;
  • A relevant PhD degree that follows on the previous qualification;
  • At least 6 years tertiary education experience or 6 years industry experience with some involvement in tertiary education;
  • Experience in curriculum / strategy development and innovation;
  • Evidence of sustained publications output;
  • Majority of recent publications should be in WoS/Scopus/IBSS journals (past 7 years);
  • Evidence of at least 3 research Master’s OR 6 coursework Master’s mini-dissertations successfully completed (supervised or co-supervised);
  • Evidence of Doctoral student supervision;
  • Evidence of conducting reviewer duties for journals and/or conferences.
 
Professor:
  • Same as for Associate Professor, plus;
  • At least eight years’ experience at a tertiary academic institution or industry related experience;
  • Evidence of successful doctoral student completion;
  • Evidence of conducting reviewer duties for ISI/Scopus-indexed journals;
  • A record of previous undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching experience, including graduation of Doctoral students;
  • A well-established and internationally recognised research record supported by publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
 
Head of Department must demonstrate:
  • Experience in the following:
    • High-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards;
    • Managing and leadership activities;
    • Marketing of technical projects to obtain research and development contracts and research funding;
    • Professional knowledge and experience in the engineering environment;
    • Managing academic and technical staff;
    • Accreditation processes;
    • National and/or international collaboration;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

BACKGROUND:
The Department of Zoology and Entomology in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Pretoria envisions being a leading research and teaching department in the disciplines of zoology and entomology in Africa and internationally, recognised for the quality, relevance and impact of its research, and graduates that are sought after by all stakeholders.
The Department is highly productive with a strong emphasis on undergraduate and postgraduate training, mentoring of postdoctoral fellows, and research with a strong focus on biodiversity, systematics, and conservation of African fauna, along with classical disciplines of physiology, behaviour, mammalogy, and ecology. Within the University, the Department has active collaborations with other departments and research entities. It supports the University's institutional research themes and actively collaborates with industry.
An academic position is available in the Department for a Lecturer with a specialisation in animal physiology, including (but not limited to) the fields of ecological or evolutionary physiology.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will have a typical academic mandate of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervising masters and doctoral students, and producing research outputs through scientific papers published in international high-impact journals, and conference presentations. The incumbent will be expected to raise research funds and build a strong internationally acclaimed research programme.
In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Curriculum development, upgrading and updating course material;
  • Participating in professional scientific societies;
  • Participating in community engagement activities;
  • Active involvement in Departmental, Faculty, and/or University administrative tasks.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A PhD degree in Zoology or a related field with specialisation in animal physiology;
  • Academic and teaching experience;
  • An indication of an emerging research career with evidence of publications in academic journals in the relevant field;
  • Experience in supervising/co-supervising MSc students.
