The Department seeks an experienced veterinarian to join a team that focuses on reproduction and welfare of domestic and wildlife species, community and environmental health. This person will focus on the teaching, clinical service and research in fields related to veterinary reproduction.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:
  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in reproductive health in the different species;
  • Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital including participation in a 24-hour service;
  • Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate;
  • Research and publication in scientific journals;
  • Engagement with owners, breeders, farmers and relevant industry stakeholders;
  • Community engagement;
  • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
  • Academic self-development.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lecturer:
  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) or registrable within a reasonable time;
  • Must be registered or willing to register in 2024 for Masters programme – MMedVet degree (Gyn) or MSc veterinary science (if the latter then with a relevant reproduction focus), and be able to graduate in reasonable time;
  • A minimum of three years of veterinary clinical experience predominantly in reproduction aspects (case log required); and
  • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development.
Or
  • A Bachelor’s degree (BVet Nursing or BSc) degree or equivalent professional veterinary nurse qualification;
  • Registration as a Veterinary nurse with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC);
  • MSc degree with particular focus on companion or production reproduction aspects;
  • Minimum of five years of veterinary nursing clinical experience (case log required); and
  • At least five full peer reviewed papers in accredited scientific journals as senior or co-author.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work with an emphasis on reproduction aspects;
  • Research interest appropriate to the position;
  • Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain a PHD in reasonable time in a field relative to the discipline of veterinary reproduction;
  • Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; and
  • Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Experience with relevant specialised procedures, techniques and tools, e.g. assisted reproduction technologies such as gamete cryopreservation;
  • Prior experience of, or intention to develop a focus for supporting clinical and research aspects of an IVF program;
  • Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience; and
  • Exposure to research in an appropriate field.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or an equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) or eligible for authorisation by the SAVC;  
  • Postgraduate studies and publications;
    • An appropriate PhD degree in a relevant area of Wildlife Veterinary medicine and/or health with eight (8) or more research-based full papers in accredited scientific journals, five (5) of which should be as senior/first author (Provide a portfolio of evidence of how these criteria are met) or;
    • A research Master’s degree and specialisation/certification in a relevant area of Wildlife Veterinary medicine and/or health with eight (8) or more research-based full papers in accredited scientific journals, five (5) of which should be as senior/first author.   • A record of previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching;
  • Proof of primary supervision of postgraduate students (at MSc or PhD levels);
  • Experience in research activities including experience in grantsmanship; and

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Relevant Master’s degree;
  • Preference will be given to qualifying candidates with a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Studies or Academic Development;
  • Five (5) years of higher education or training-related experience;
  • Three (3) years’ experience in institutional initiatives for the academic development of students and lecturers;
  • Expertise in blended and online learning;
  • Experience in using the affordances of technology to promote teaching and learning;
  • Proven experience in the development and application of innovative teaching and learning strategies;
  • Experience in working with a Learning Management System.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Honours Degree in Industrial Psychology, Human Resources Management, Social Sciences or any other relevant field;

  • Experience in advocacy and facilitation of transformation, diversity and social justice projects and initiatives;
  • Experience in implementing student capacity building programs in the education sector;

  • Evidence of successful design and implementation of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Proven supervision to completion of at least two (2) master’s students;

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Performing excellent patient care and handling;
  • Clinic management (record keeping, hygiene, stock control, care of equipment, safety measures etc.);
  • Supervising support staff;
  • Administering and monitoring of anaesthesia and sedation;
  • Performing emergency procedures;
  • Communicating with patient owners;
  • Demonstrating techniques to and instructing students and student nurses; and
