The College of Law and Management Studies seeks to appoint an exceptional, innovative and strategic leader who will be instrumental in shaping the emergence of the School of Commerce and align it to the institutional strategy 2023-2032. The Dean and Head of School (D&HoS) is responsible for the academic leadership and overall management of the School. S/he will be expected to provide high-level academic leadership and champion the strategic direction of the School in research, teaching and learning and community engagement, consistent with the University and College’s vision, mission and transformation ongoing project renewal agenda.
The School of Commerce is organised into the disciplines of Accountancy, Economics, Finance and Management. The Dean and Head of School is part of the College Leadership and Management Team and reports to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head of College although s/he ultimately represents Senate and Council mandates.
Minimum Requirements:
• Professor/Associate Professor;
• PhD/Doctoral Degree in a discipline relevant to the School;
• Evidence of established academic leadership and scholarship with an excellent publication and research record, and proven excellence in teaching and learning at a level that currently does/will attract respect and credibility from within the University, international scholars and other relevant external bodies; and
• Three (3) years’ experience in management and leadership of a School and/or Faculty or Research Unit/Centre of comparable size and complexity.
• A track record of attracting competitive research grants

• Excellent communications skills
• Exceptional interpersonal relationship skills
• Understanding of the higher education environment in South Africa and the relevant legislation.
• Evidence of good knowledge of the SA academic and higher education environment

The Dean in the School of Medicine will oversee various disciplines such as; Anaesthesiology Pain Medicine and Critical Care, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Child Health, Orthopaedic Surgery, Psychiatry, Radiology, along with Family Medicine and other clinical disciplines. The Dean will also oversee other Medical Sciences disciplines such as Anatomy, Physiology, and programmes in Medical Biochemistry, Virology, Haematology, Pathology, and Medical Microbiology will form a division of Medical Sciences in the School of Medicine and led by a Deputy Dean of Medical Sciences.
The Dean in the School of Health Sciences will oversee various disciplines; in health sciences and Nursing (currently in the School of Nursing and Public Health), and their corresponding graduate programmes, and staff in the subjects of Audiology, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Therapy, Dietetics and Human Nutrition, Physiotherapy, Optometry, Biokinetics and Sport Science, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing.
The Dean and Head of School provides high-level academic leadership and strategic direction of the School in research, teaching, community and health engagement, local and continental strategic partnerships, and transformation consistent with the University’s and the Board’s vision and mission.
The incumbent will be highest leader for all academics and professional services staff within the School. The incumbent will also interact closely with professional stakeholders outside the School.
The Dean and Head of School is part of the College Leadership and Management Team and reports to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor though ultimately represents Senate and Council mandates.
Minimum Requirements:
• Associate Professor/Professor with experience in an academic/research leadership role;
• PhD/Doctoral Degree in a discipline relevant to the Schools within the College of Health Sciences;
• Demonstrated experience in an academic/research leadership role with the ability to network with key stakeholders locally and internationally;
• Minimum three (3) years’ experience in management and leadership of a School, Faculty or research unit of a significant size and complexity;
• High profile and standing within the business community AND
• Proven experience in leading and managing change.

• Exceptional interpersonal relationship skills;
• Demonstrated track record of fundraising and attracting competitive research grants;
• Understanding of the higher education environment in South Africa and the relevant legislation;
