The HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP) is a multidisciplinary HIV pathogenesis research programme based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in Durban. The HPP has been involved in studies of HIV-1 immunopathogenesis for over 15 years. 
 
The HPP has an opening for a highly motivated Research Technician to study the female genital tract microbiome and its role in health outcomes such as HIV acquisition and preterm birth. Our overall research goal is to understand how bacterial interactions shape the vaginal microbiome, which is known to impact female sexual and reproductive health. 
 
The person hired will report to the HPP Laboratory Manager. He/she will also work under the co-supervision of Dr. Doug Kwon at the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard and Dr. Thumbi Ndung’u, Scientific Director of the HPP, on an exciting clinical trial which is the first randomized trial of vaginal microbiome transplant in sub-Saharan Africa. The position will involve handling and processing of tissue and blood samples, immunologic assays, nucleic acid extractions, PCR, sequencing, and utilizing novel assays to study mucosal immune responses to mucosal bacteria. The technician will be based at HPP/UKZN in Durban, South Africa, but will also undergo training at the Ragon Institute in Cambridge, MA USA. 
 
The person is required to be highly motivated and independent, with the ability to work in a dynamic team environment. He/she must have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, good interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communications skills, and flexibility to occasionally work evenings or weekends. Laboratory experience is required. Computer experience including expertise with Microsoft Office programs is essential. 
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 
• Relevant BSc Honours degree in biology, microbiology, computational biology, biological engineering, ecology, or similar required. 
• Hands-on experience in general cellular biology techniques 
• Minimum one-year experience working in a biomedical research laboratory (exclusive of time spent in a lab towards completion of an Honours degree but inclusive of time spent in a lab towards completion of a Masters degree) 
• Familiarity with biomedical research laboratory procedures and safety requirements 
• Good computer literacy (Microsoft Office) 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Perform experiments analyzing microbial and tissue samples from human subjects, assessing the impact of the microbiome and HIV infection on cervicovaginal mucosal health. 
• Perform and assist with experiments involving bacteriology, immunologic assays, microscopy, and molecular biology. 
• Analyze data and present findings to others. 
• Maintain detailed documentation of the experimental work. 
 
 
• Ensure quality control of equipment, reagents, and cellular components. 
• Read and interpret current literature to aid in experimental design. 
• Work closely within the group and with outside collaborators. 
• Maintain close communications with supervisors regarding progress. 
• Participate in the department’s various academic activities - journal club, research update, lab meetings, quality improvement meetings and audits, etc 
• Must be prepared to work after hours and on weekends, when required. 
• Monitoring and maintenance of equipment 
• Waste management 
• General laboratory housekeeping

Terms of appointment and Selection Process 
 
The post will be offered on a one-year, fixed term contract. The terms and conditions governing this appointment will be in compliance with those of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The monthly cost of employment for this position will be R17,000 – R23,000, dependent on the experience of the successful candidate.

The School of Health Sciences wishes to appoint an Academic who will contribute actively to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning, research and community engagement. Candidates will also be required to do administration. 
 
General Minimum Requirements 
• All applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in Audiology; 
• Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Audiologist;
• Computer literacy in Microsoft Office packages (especially Excel and PowerPoint); 
• Valid code 08 driver’s license AND 
• Minimum of 2 years clinical experience as an Audiologist. 
 
Minimum Requirements for Senior Lecturer 
• A PhD Degree in a relevant discipline; 
• Evidence of appropriate teaching experience in a relevant field at the tertiary level; 
• Evidence of current and sustained research publication record in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level; 
• A track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters’ and/or PhD levels, appropriate for the level AND 
• Demonstrated ability to apply for research grants, either as the Principal Investigator or as a member of a team. 
 
Minimum requirements for Lecturer 
• A Master’s degree in the relevant discipline; 
• Experience in teaching and learning, and assessment practices in a relevant field at a tertiary institution; 
• Ability to make the necessary preparation and coordination of various teaching and examination schedules within the Discipline AND 
• Evidence of involvement in community engagement programs. 
 
A successful candidate at the Lecturer level will be expected to complete a PhD within 5 years of the date of assumption of duty. 
 
Specialization in aural rehabilitation, cochlear implants and AVT training would be an advantage. Experience in student training and research supervision would be an advantage. The HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP) is a multidisciplinary HIV pathogenesis research programme based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in Durban. HPP has been involved in studies of HIV-1 immunopathogenesis for over 20 years. 
HPP needs to fill a GENERAL ASSISTANT position. The incumbent will be required to assist with certain physical tasks in the laboratory – changing CO2 tanks, assisting with liquid nitrogen repository duties, etc. The incumbent will carry out autoclaving duties, assist with the receipt and storage of stock, and perform general laboratory housekeeping and maintenance. The incumbent will act as back-up courier of samples, when the HPP courier is not available. The incumbent will also carry out certain simple handyman duties around the department. 
The incumbent will be required to be hard-working and efficient, organized, meticulous and professional, and must be able to work independently as well as part of a team. The incumbent will report to HPP’s Laboratory Manager.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 
• Matric with Mathematics and Life Sciences/Biology 
• Minimum two-year work experience in a laboratory 
• Experience working with human samples. 
• Familiarity with biomedical research laboratory procedures and safety requirements. 
• Computer literacy with standard Microsoft Office applications. 
• Driver’s license (code B or higher) and ability to drive a manual car. 
• Knowledge of basic maintenance and power tools 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Laboratory housekeeping and maintenance 
• Biorepository duties 
• Disposal of biohazardous waste 
• Basic carpentry, repairs and general maintenance 
• Courier / driving
