Ref: HPP/Research Technician/IAVI/Sep2024 
The HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP) has a Research Technician position available. The incumbent will be required to be highly motivated, meticulous and hard-working and be able to work independently. The incumbent will report to the Laboratory Manager / Researcher. 
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 
• Relevant BSc degree in a biomedical field 
• Minimum two year’s work experience in a biomedical research laboratory 
• Experience working with human samples 
• Experience with general molecular biology techniques, such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cloning, sequencing, sequence analysis 
• Experience with tissue culture techniques 
• Good computer literacy (Microsoft Office) 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Maintenance of cell lines for experiments 
• Equipment maintenance 
• SOP review and writing 
• Assist with Health and Safety checks, and evacuation drills of the laboratory, as required 
• Training of postgraduate students and new technicians in laboratory techniques 
• General housekeeping and temperature monitoring of equipment 
• Must be prepared to work after hours and on weekends, when required. 
• Participate in the department’s various academic activities - journal club, research update, lab meetings, quality improvement meetings and audits, etc.

Terms of appointment and Selection Process 
The post will be offered on a one-year, fixed term contract. The terms and conditions governing this appointment will be in compliance with those of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The monthly cost of employment for this position will be R17,000 – R20,000, dependent on the experience of the successful candidate. 
 
The closing date for receipt of applications is Wednesday, 18 September 2024. The University, however, reserves the right in special circumstances to accept late applications or to extend the above date in order to facilitate further searches. The selection process will commence in September 2024 and will continue until suitable candidates are appointed or a decision is taken not to fill the posts.
