  • Evidence of University service, and involvement in community engagement programmes

 

Added Advantage:

  • Experience in supervision or co-supervision of postgraduate students

Job description

The incumbent will be responsible for the ensuring the protection and security of persons, buildings and infrastructure, equipment and assets on his/her particular campus, including the University Managed Residences attached to the respective campus; gathering local crime intelligence; crime prevention; risk assessments, including for events planned on campus; assisting with investigations; access, and internal traffic control and all associated daily operations on their campus(es).

Together with the Director: Risk Management Services (RMS), the incumbent will be required to assist with the establishment and implementation of all relevant regulatory policies, guidelines and regulations, in support of the University’s endeavours, by ensuring the establishment and maintenance of the campus (and its residences) environment, which is secure, safe and conducive to scholarship in keeping with the University's vision, mission, goals, values and strategies. 

The incumbent will be expected to utilise all human resources, both internal and external, at their disposal, and well as any financial resources allocated.

The incumbent will also be required to work closely with a range of  key stakeholders, including but not limited to:

  • Internally: Director RMS; Academic and Support Services managers; Student leadership and the University community at large; Contractors and visitors.
  • Externally: Key external stakeholders including any external services providers and  other organs of State tasked with safety and security (for example: SAPS, POPS, METRO), when on campus.

The position requires the aptitude to lead and manage a diverse campus team, demonstrating a high level of professionalism and service orientation, all undertaken while under pressure from a range of sources and situations.  The ability to manage and analyse information is required, as are good organizational and logistical skills, as well as strong problem solving and decision-making skills.

 

Minimum requirements

  • Grade A Registration with PSIRA (Current).
  • An appropriate 3-year qualification in law enforcement, management or administration.
  • At least eight (8) years combined security, military or police related work experience, of which four (4) years should be at a senior management level. 
  • A valid, unendorsed, Code B or EB Driver Licence. (Code 8)

Job description

The incumbent will be responsible for strategic leadership in the division, in support of all University endeavors, by ensuring the establishment and maintenance of an environment which is secure, safe and conducive to scholarship in keeping with the University's vision, goals, values and strategies. The incumbent will be required to develop, implement and continuously manage functional and cross-functional operations, through co-ordination and supervision of campus-based and cross cutting managers. These functions include, but are not limited to taking responsibly for the daily operations of the various campuses with regard to general security, crime intelligence, crime prevention, risk assessments, investigations, traffic control and occupational and general safety of all users. This includes custodianship all of the associated policies, procedures, rules and regulations, as well as the optimum utilisation of financial and human resources, both internal and external, at their disposal.

The incumbent will also be required to work closely with a range of key stakeholders, including but not limited to:

  • Internally: Executive line management and other Executive members; Academic and support services managers; Student leadership and the University community at large. 
  • Externally: Key external stakeholders including any external services providers and other organs of State tasked with safety and security.

The position requires the aptitude to lead and manage a large and diverse team. An appropriate 3-year qualification in law enforcement, management or administration AND at least ten (10) years combined work experience at a management level with responsibility for safety and/or security (preferably both) preferably in a tertiary institution or a larger public / private sector organization, including at least five (5) year senior management experience with evidence of participation in strategic planning at a corporate level and responsibility for human resources and financial management.

OR

An appropriate qualification or certification in law enforcement, management or administration of less than 3 years duration, AND at least ten (10) years, recent and relevant law enforcement / security experience in a senior management position of a large public / private sector organization / Higher Education Institution, with evidence of participation in strategic planning at a corporate level and responsibility for human resources and financial management.

The Discipline of Electrical Electronic and Computer Engineering in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education’s New Generation of Academics’ Programme, has an exciting opportunity for eligible candidates to pursue a career as an academic and researcher. The successful candidate will be expected to register for a doctoral degree at UKZN and will be closely mentored to become an academic through a programme designed to assist with early career development.

 The incumbent will report to the Academic Leader Discipline: Electrical Electronic and Computer Engineering.

 

Minimum requirements

  • A BSc Engineering or B. Engineering degree in Electrical Electronic or Computer Engineering (NQF level 8)
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Electronic or Computer Engineering, with a pass mark of at least 70%
  •  South African Citizen

The successful applicant will be expected to complete a PhD within 5 years from the date of assumption of duty.

 A brief statement of motivation regarding the applicant’s aspiration to become an academic and a researcher must accompany the applications.
