The University of Fort Hare invites applications from appropriately qualified and experienced candidates for the role of Head of Department in the Department of Foundations and Pedagogical Studies Education.
The University of Fort Hare is seeking to appoint a Head of Department (HOD) who will oversee the management of academic curricula, staff, and student administration processes in alignment with institutional policies, rules, and faculty guidelines. The incumbent will lead and manage the department to realize its full potential, ensuring excellence across all areas of academic activity. This role is integral to the University’s leadership, requiring the HOD to understand and contribute to the broader University Strategic Plan, including its vision, mission, goals, and targets, while also managing the daily operations of the department within the Faculty.
 
This is a 3-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal for one additional 3-year term, contingent upon maintaining good academic standing and a satisfactory performance assessment.
 
 Minimum Requirements: 
  • A Doctoral Degree
  • Senior Lecturer rank level, but preferably at Associate Professor or Professor level
  • 5 years’ experience in the higher education sector, of which 2 years in an academic leadership role
  • Extensive undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research experience
  • A credible track record of high-quality academic work
  • A track record of international and national accredited research publications commensurate with the academic rank of Senior Lecturer, Associates Professor or Full Professor
  • Postgraduate supervision experience including successful Doctoral supervision commensurate with the academic rank of Senior Lecturer, Associates Professor or Full Professor
  • Evidence of successful national / international fundraising for research
  • Experience of effectively line-managing individual members of staff and teams.
 
Added Advantages
  • Recognition as an established scholar in a chosen area of research (e.g., NRF rating, international keynote addresses/ plenary lectures).

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop academic and operational plans for the department in consultation with the Dean, ensuring alignment with the Faculty’s Operational Plans and the University’s Strategic Plan, Annual Performance Plan, and Institutional Operational Plans.
  • Translate strategic goals into operational plans, leading the department to implement these plans and contribute to the department's strategic objectives.
  • Provide leadership in research and postgraduate studies, ensuring that the department meets the University and Faculty’s research goals and targets.
  • Promote excellence in research and innovation among both students and staff, establishing mechanisms that emphasize the importance of research and development, and facilitating research grant funding applications.
  • Ensure the performance of all staff in the department aligns with departmental and faculty plans, which contribute to the goals and targets stated in the University’s Annual Performance Plan and Institutional Operational Plan
  • Develop and implement staff retention mechanisms by promoting continuous professional development and career advancement opportunities.
  • Oversee the programs and modules offered by the department, ensuring the implementation of all related University policies, rules, and procedures.
  • Foster positive morale and cohesiveness within the department, managing and motivating all staff to provide students with a quality education in a positive, encouraging, and effective working environment.

The University of Fort Hare is seeking to appoint a Head of Department (HOD) who will oversee the management of academic curricula, staff, and student administration processes in alignment with institutional policies, rules, and faculty guidelines. The incumbent will lead and manage the department to realize its full potential, ensuring excellence across all areas of academic activity. This role is integral to the University’s leadership, requiring the HOD to understand and contribute to the broader University Strategic Plan, including its vision, mission, goals, and targets, while also managing the daily operations of the department within the Faculty.
 
This is a 3-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal for one additional 3-year term, contingent upon maintaining good academic standing and a satisfactory performance assessment.
 
 Minimum Requirements: 
  • A Doctoral Degree
  • Senior Lecturer rank level, but preferably at Associate Professor or Professor level
  • 5 years’ experience in the higher education sector, of which 2 years in an academic leadership role
  • Extensive undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research experience
  • A credible track record of high-quality academic work
  • A track record of international and national accredited research publications commensurate with the academic rank of Senior Lecturer, Associates Professor or Full Professor
  • Postgraduate supervision experience including successful Doctoral supervision commensurate with the academic rank of Senior Lecturer, Associates Professor or Full Professor
  • Evidence of successful national / international fundraising for research
  • Experience of effectively line-managing individual members of staff and teams.

  • Translate strategic goals into operational plans, leading the department to implement these plans and contribute to the department's strategic objectives.
  • Provide leadership in research and postgraduate studies, ensuring that the department meets the University and Faculty’s research goals and targets.
  • Promote excellence in research and innovation among both students and staff, establishing mechanisms that emphasize the importance of research and development, and facilitating research grant funding applications.
  • Ensure the performance of all staff in the department aligns with departmental and faculty plans, which contribute to the goals and targets stated in the University’s Annual Performance Plan and Institutional Operational Plan
  • Develop and implement staff retention mechanisms by promoting continuous professional development and career advancement opportunities.
  • Oversee the programs and modules offered by the department, ensuring the implementation of all related University policies, rules, and procedures.
  • Foster positive morale and cohesiveness within the department, managing and motivating all staff to provide students with a quality education in a positive, encouraging, and effective working environment.
  • Control expenditure against departmental budgets and manage information about research budgets and expenditure within the department.

A full-time postdoctoral position is available in the Faculty of Education in the School of General and Continuing Education, Faculty of Education, at the University of Fort Hare (UFH), East London Campus.  The fellowship will enable an outstanding doctoral graduate to obtain research and innovation experience at a Higher Education Institution under the mentorship of established researchers. The fellowship is awarded on a competitive basis, considering the applicants' academic achievements, publication outputs and research potential, as well as the relevance of prior experience and expertise. The fellowship is available for a period of one year
 
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
  • Candidates should have a Doctoral degree in Education, with a focus on Language in Education issues
  • Open to South Africans and foreign nationals
  • Preference will be given to South African citizens, women in particular and permanent residents.
  • Young and emerging scholars
  • Successful applicants may not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship.
  • Successful applicants must be able to relocate to the UFH for the duration of the fellowship.
 
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL BE REQUIRED TO:
  • Reside as a postdoctoral research fellow at the UFH and participate in relevant activities of the Faculty of Education, and the Department of Research and Innovation
  • In conjunction with the host as well as other members of the host school, co-author a minimum of 2 units per annum in DHET–accredited scholarly journal articles or chapters in accredited/credible commissioned books
  • The successful candidate will be required to conduct innovative research and obtain evidenced- based empirical data on Language teaching and learning in South Africa.
  • The postdoctoral research fellow shall reside in East London to access facilities at UFH East London Campus and participate in relevant activities

University of Fort Hare seeks to recruit 1 Post-Doctoral Research fellow to commence by May 2025. This position will support the ongoing research activities in Macroeconomic with a special focus on regional financial integration, institutions, financial flows and growth with a special focus on the Southern African Development Community region.
The Bursary is valued at R300 000 per annum. The appointment is for a 12-month period and will be renewed subject to the production of 2 Units in DHET accredited journals.
 
REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Doctoral degree in Economics or a related field obtained within the past 5 years
  2. Applied knowledge of research design, good computer skills and experience with statistical software such as EViews, STATA etc.
  3. Knowledge and experience of quantitative and qualitative research methods will be added advantage.

A full-time postdoctoral position is available in the Department of English Studies and Comparative Literature, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, at the University of Fort Hare (UFH), Alice Campus, South Africa. The duration of the fellowship is 12 months but renewable depending on the performance of the post-doctoral fellow as prescribed by the research office of the UFH. The fellow is expected to do research involving classroom interaction and learning outcomes in multilingual settings, as well as decolonial language pedagogies in the global south.
 
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
  • Applicant must have completed doctoral degree within the last five years;
  • Must have graduated with a PhD degree in Applied English Linguistics, English Language Studies
  • Preference is given to women, particularly South African Citizens and SA permanent residents
  • Must be a young and emerging scholar, and
  • Must have evidence of publications in DHET accredited journals (minimum of 3 publications will be an added advantage).
 
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL BE REQUIRED TO:
  • Undertake independent research and participate in the research activities of the Department of English Studies and Comparative Literature.
  • Publish a minimum of three (3) journal articles in DHET accredited journals per annum, and

This postdoctoral fellowship program in Biostatistics emphasizes quantitative research in health-related areas to help individuals establish a career in Biostatistics, a field that is expanding in low and middle-income countries because of the rise in biomedical research.
Applications for post-doctoral fellowships should centre on one of the main research queries that can help tackle significant health issues in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  1. In what ways can data science, machine learning, deep learning, or artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms improve personalized treatment for patients with both communicable and non-communicable diseases in Africa?
  2. What will be the response of critical diseases in Africa to expected climate and environmental changes, and how will this affect public health and development outcomes?
  3. Is it possible to determine how personal characteristics, environmental changes, and diseases are interconnected using causal modelling and structural equation modelling?
 
Selection Criteria
  • Doctoral degree in Biostatistics, Applied Statistics, or related field obtained within the last 5 years.
  • Must have strong quantitative and qualitative data collection and analytical skills.
  • South Africans, permanent residents, or internationals for full-time research.
  • Preference will be given to South African black female citizens and permanent residents.
  • Young and emerging scholars with a minimum of 5 publications

Value and tenure
  • The fellowship is valued at R300 000 per year (non-taxable).
  • The fellowship is valid for ONE year, but renewable for a second year based on excellent performance and availability of funds.
 
 Conditions of award
  • Applicant must be ready to publish a minimum of 2units in DHET-accredited journals based on the current project and present at conferences.
  • The successful applicant will be required to be based at Alice Campus for the duration of the fellowship or as agreed by the host.
  • Successful applicants may not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship.
