The successful candidate will assess the carbon footprint of the existing Building Integrated
Photovoltaic (BIPV) and other solar PV systems at the University of Fort Hare SolarWatt Park.
THE KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS INCLUDE:
- Continuous thermal and electrical performance assessment of the BIPV
- Develop a model and EPDs inventory of the BIPV for energy-use intensity simulation and carbon footprint assessment
- Energy-use intensity and carbon footprint optimisation relative to sustainable building best practices and standards
- Upscaling of optimised BIPV in the residential sector of South Africa
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Doctoral degree in Physics (Building), Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Building Engineering or related field obtained within the last 4 years
- A minimum of 3 years relevant experience in the abovementioned research areas
- A track record of publications in DHET accredited journals
EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
- Development of novel products and or processes
- A minimum of 4 publications in DHET accredited journals
- Co-mentoring of postgraduate students
- Assist with teaching and learning in primary department

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
- The broader research centres primarily on how communication could improve pro-environmental behaviours within the context of addressing climate change-related issues and challenges around food security.
- To ascertain media salience and public exposure to climate change and food security issues.
- Determine public perception, knowledge and attitude toward climate change and food security issues.
- Establish the role of media accounts in forming public attitudes and beliefs about climate change and food security.
- Understand the links between media accounts and pro-environmental behaviours (climate change and food security)
- Explore the role of the media, particularly community radio, in galvanising the silent majority, especially the rural population, to embrace climate change and food security efficiency behaviours.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AND CONDITIONS ARE:
- Prospective fellows must be self-driven with a solid environmental communication research background, especially in the areas of climate change and food security
- Possess a doctoral degree not older than five years in communication or a closely related discipline.
- Preference will be given to South African Citizens, particularly women, and holders of a South African Permanent Residence permit.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL BE REQUIRED TO:
- Produce at least three (3) research articles in DHET-accredited journals.
- Contribute to building the research profile of the Environmental Communication Research Group.
- The PDRF will actively participate in research activities within the Department of Communication and postgraduate students' supervision and mentoring.
VALUE AND TENURE:
- The annual stipend is R300,000 non-taxable and payable in four equal instalments
- The Fellowship is valid for ONE year and renewable subject to satisfactory performance.

- Applicants should have a PhD in Zoology/Genetics (or related field) obtained within the last 5 years.
- Excellent academic record with demonstrated ability to publish in high-impact factor journals as corresponding/lead author.
- Experience in presenting research at national and/or international conferences (oral presentations).
- Data analysis will require an extensive knowledge of multivariate statistics of metagenomic analysis, and R programming skills to analyse the generated data.
- Lab work will require advanced knowledge of genetics methodologies involving dietary analysis using faecal samples (i.e. species identification, sex identification and DNA metabarcoding) and/or population genetics using hair/tissue samples.
- Knowledge of metagenomic methods in general is important, specifically the laboratory preparation of samples (DNA extraction to library preparation for high-throughput sequencing of targeted amplicons) and a solid understanding of metagenomic data analysis methods.
- An added advantage would be experience with the Oxford Nanopore sequencing technologies.
Key performance and expectations:
- Publish a minimum of 3 peer-reviewed research articles per annum in DHET accredited journals.
- Assist with supervision of post-graduate students on campus (lab and statistical analyses, write-up).
- Participate in other research activities as delegated.
- Present research at local conferences (funding-dependent).
Value of the fellowship and tenure:
- R300 000 per annum.
- The fellowship is available for a period of one year, renewable up to a total of 3 years, subject to satisfactory performance.

The Research in Inclusion and Township Economies (RITE) Research Niche Area at the University of Fort Hare seeks to recruit A Post-Doctoral Research fellow to commence as soon as possible. This position will support the ongoing research activities on Township Economies and inclusion.
The Funding is valued at R300 000 per annum. It is tenable for one year and renewable for up to three (3) years, subject to satisfactory performance.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Doctoral degree in Human settlements, Economics or a related field obtained after the 2019 academic
- Research in any of the focus

The University of Fort Hare (UFH) is among the ten universities jointly co-leading the DSI-NRF Institute for the Preparedness and Prevention of Pandemics. The Institute’s activities are multidisciplinary with national spread and continental and global networks. The Institute will have the task of facilitating a unified national response to a future pandemic or preventing an occurrence. The Institute is segregated into Thematic Research Centers and Integrated Platforms, and UFH is jointly hosting Thematic Research Centers, and one of the Thematic Centers focuses on the epidemiology of endemic and emerging pathogens. Anti-microbial resistance will be a key research focus
POSITION:
Three (3) postdoctoral positions are available at the Institute. The postdoctoral researcher will focus on the surveillance and analysis of pathogens of public health priority. Candidates with hands-on experience in molecular biology with a bias on monitoring antibiotic susceptibility patterns and investigating mechanisms of endemic and emerging pathogens, disease modeling, and epidemiology are particularly encouraged to apply. The postdoctoral fellowship is available for a period of one year, and the anticipated starting date is June 20, 2024. A tax-free stipend of R300 000 per annum has been granted for each position
MAIN RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:
- Establish sentinel surveillance sites to enable real-time testing and data reporting of novel members of the ESKAPE + V
- Establish the drivers of virulence in novel members of the ESKAPE + V
- Set up a reporting system for pathogen diagnosis from the environment and fomites to enable real-time testing and data
- Strengthen surveillance programs for diarrheal pathogens, to investigate the incidence, prevalence, and seasonal distribution of these infectious
- Modeling infectious
- Publish at least three (3) research articles in DHET-accredited journals and book
ELIGIBILITY AND DESIRED PROFILE:
- The candidate will have a PhD in Microbiology, Molecular biology, Computational biology, Bioinformatics, Microbial genomics, Biostatistics, or related fields, and experience in high-throughput genomic technologies and Disease Modeling and Anti-Microbial
- The candidate will have a proven competence to publish in Q1 and Q2 journals in NCBI-indexed and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) Journals which shall all be DHET-accredited
- The postdoctoral fellow should be willing to support the postgraduate students’ research in the Patho-Biocatalysis Group (PBG) and the Infectious Diseases and Medicinal Plants Research Niche
