JOB PURPOSE

This role exists for a Manufacturing Excellence (ManEx) Operations Internship based at Unilever Boksburg Factory. The internship is focused on supporting the execution and sustainability of the Unilever Manufacturing System (UMS) at site level. The intern will work closely with the Site ManEx Lead, Production teams, and Pillar leaders to implement improvement initiatives, restore basic conditions, and embed World Class Manufacturing practices across the factor. You’ll be part of a team that believes in doing work that matters — for people and the planet.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The intern will support the implementation of Manufacturing Excellence systems by working directly with production teams and pillar leaders.
  • Key responsibilities include:
  • Support implementation and sustainability of UMS/World Class Manufacturing (WCM) activities on the shopfloor.
  • Assist pillar leaders (AM, PM, FI, QC) in executing pillar plans, tracking actions, and maintaining standards.
  • Support problem solving activities by assisting in root cause analysis and implementation of countermeasures.
  • Participate in shopfloor activities to identify abnormalities, restore basic conditions, and improve line stability.
  • Assist in development and deployment of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), One Point Lessons (OPLs), and technical standards.
  • Support execution of Kaizens and focused improvement initiatives led by Production Engineers and the FI pillar.
  • Participate in daily and weekly performance review routines and support closure of actions.
  • Work with operators and technicians to improve adherence to standards and strengthen capability at line level.
  • Assist in validation of implemented improvements to ensure sustainability of gains.
  • Support implementation of visual management systems and 5S standards.
  • Ensure adherence to Safety, Quality, and Environmental standards always.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completed a degree or National Diploma in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Basic understanding of Manufacturing Excellence, Lean, TPM, or continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and willingness to work on the shop floor.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • High initiative and hands-on attitude.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completed a degree or National Diploma in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Basic understanding of Manufacturing Excellence, Lean, TPM, or continuous improvement methodologies.

JOB PURPOSE

This role brings together technology powered expertise and solutions to the overall GMS ecosystem transforming how packaging artwork and digital pack assets are created, adapted, reviewed, delivered, stored and maintained across technology, processes and markets. The role must encompass and bring to life the strategy for automation within GMS across the ecosystem This successful candidate must have a good understanding of how general process flows work, as well as be familiar with current market trends/ landscape within the automation and AI ecosystem.

 

WHAT WILL YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES BE

• Ownership and delivery - Identify key technology solutions in Market to design and run experiments/POCs to drive efficiency improvements in the e2e Artwork Process (2D + 3D)

• Collaborate with key internal stakeholders to identify bottlenecks/ pain points and opportunities in the current and emerging Artwork Process to feed into the automation pipeline for both 2D and 3D (CGI) asset creation.

• Data driven analytics within the Artwork Process (2D and 3D) to identify bottlenecks/ resource intensive tasks and opportunities for automation

• Work with various vendors, IT business partners, Digital Asset Management teams to prototype valid automated and/or AI solutions to address bottlenecks/ resource intensive activities

• Ensure solutions defined can be scaled globally

• Build evaluation criteria and measure speed, cost, quality and compliance improvements

• Document results, risks, and business value

• Ensure compliance with Unilever Security policies when defining and embedding automation solutions.

• Improve integration between external vendors, artwork tools, Digital Asset Management, Functional Source systems, Power BI etc, by defining requirements for API-driven system integration and orchestration

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED

 

Experiences & Qualifications

Relevant Tertiary Degree

A blend of artwork process excellence and Automation/AI fluency

• Experience with technology-driven POCs and delivery using AI, (Generative and Agentic), automation or workflow optimisation.

• Hands-on experience with leading LLMs, multi-modal AI and prompt engineering.

• Experience in AI and automation delivery with 3rd party platforms.

• 5 years in process management, packaging artwork, design-to-print, marketing operations, DAM or related fields.

• A solid and demonstratable understanding of managing projects across multiple markets/agencies.

• Experience working with artwork management systems, Digital Asset Management platforms and creative production tools.

  • Compiles and revises standards and procedures relating to SHE to ensure compliance with UL SHE standards.
  • Maintains a database of the standard operation procedures and copies of all legislation relating to the SHE matters.
  • Maintains a database of remedial actions from accident reports, internal & external audits and safety inspections.
  • Manages the site’s central database of all statutory records.
  • Participates in safety inspections, HAZOP studies and Management of Change discussions.

  • Is responsible for the compilation of site emergency plans and the training of personnel to exercise these plans.

JOB PURPOSE

Site SHE Lead has overall responsibility for managing Safety, Health and Environment improvement activities to achieve excellence at the site level. The Site SHE Lead works with site Supply Chain teams to develop the local SHE Strategy and improvement plans to achieve sustainable SHE excellence by reducing injuries, illnesses and environmental impact as measured in the core KPIs. Where geographical proximity, size and complexity permit, this role may cover more than one site and lead programs across the region. The SHE Lead is responsible for building capability within his/her SHE teams, inclusive of production and engineering teams, with explicit focus on site SHE leadership and technical skills.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cascade, deploy and implement SHE strategy and programs to achieve excellence and compliance in SHE performance.
  • Safety performance & Environmental Impact Reduction: Drive SHE performance through the systematic reduction of Safety KPI’s, managing leading indicators, and ensuring compliance to all standards and procedures. Collaborate with the Site teams to minimize environmental impacts (COD, waste, SOx, CO2, water, and energy).
  • Management Influence: Drive safety and environmental leadership through senior management engagement, business partnering, coaching, and empowerment. Ensuring that Safety is driven as a line responsibility, and (senior) leadership is accountability for all safety compliance and performance.
  • Team Management & Development : Oversee SHE teams including the development of SHE technical skills, leadership development, as well as building a talent pipeline for succession.
  • Safety Culture: develop and deploy plans to significantly shift the safety culture, with a focus on leadership and employee accountability
  • SHE Data Management & Reporting: Ensure timely delivery of prescribed SHE data, as well as accurate reporting in SHE systems (OS/EPR/PAR/etc.), with necessary documentation.
  • Incident Reporting: Ensure timely reporting of recordable incidents per UL and legal requirements.
  • Accident Investigation Advisory: Advise on accident and incident investigations (including IMT’s) and oversee reporting accuracy. Building strong capabilities and compliance with the process. Support all serious incident investigations.
  • Legal Compliance Monitoring and guidance: Ensure compliance with local/national regulations and Unilever standards. Advise site leadership on national SHE legislation and implement relevant policies.
  • Risk Assessment: Drive safety and environmental risk assessments programs and processes, developing appropriate controls. Working with Occupational Health and other technical professional in operations to mitigate risk that may lead to occupational injury, occupational illness, or negative environmental impact.
  • Leadership in SHE Pillars: Lead the Safety & Environmental Pillars establishing the pillar frameworks as the standard ways of working for SHE.
  • BBS Program Support: Understand and support the deployment of the Unilever BBS Program.
  • Subcommittee Committee Leadership assistance: Assist in developing and leading internal safety committees as well as building capabilities. This includes CSHECs, all relevant subcommittees, Management performance reviews/meetings for 3P’s, as well as crisis management committees (IMT’s).
  • Data and Trend Analysis: Conduct analysis of incidents, near misses, and compliance audits data to establish trends and insights of performance and compliance.
  • Continuous improvement: Apply continuous improvement tools, establishing priority focus areas, countermeasures, preventative measure and focused improvement plans to improve metrics and program effectiveness.
  • Audit program & systems: Develop and implement internal & external SHE audit and inspection programs. Ensure compliance and Implement findings audits, adhering to agreed deadlines.
  • Training Needs Assessment and Capability Building: Enhance SHE capabilities from leadership to shop floor, through programs like LTO (License to Operate) and LTL (License to Lead). Identify training needs for all programs, including regulatory compliance and ensure SHE training program delivery.
  • Budget Formulation: Create a single-functional budget for strategic deliverables.
  • Governance Framework Development: Establish governance and compliance models for operational functions.
  • Community of Practice: as part of the regional SHE leadership team, coordinate the SHE professionals’ community of practice activities to drive collaboration, sharing best practices, improving capabilities, and effective cascade of GBU/Global cascade.
  • SHE Culture Promotion: Establish a SHE culture program aligned with the Unilever BBS Program, to improve safe behavior and good working practices across sites.
  • Engineering Safety Support: Apply Unilever guidelines for Engineering Safety as per SIMAS (Safety in Manufacturing and Supply).

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
