SENIOR MECHANICAL MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN: ZONE OPERATIONS DIVISION (RE-ADVERTISEMENT 12 MONTHS FIXED-TERM CONTRACT)

PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Senior Mechanical Maintenance Technician is responsible for the operation and maintenance of machinery at TASEZ.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Operation and Maintenance of Machinery:
- Develop, implement and maintain preventative maintenance schedule for machinery in accordance with the Original Manufacturer’s Specifications, applicable South African National Standards and statutory requirements.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance of machinery in accordance with the preventative maintenance schedule.
- Identify critical spares and service providers required for the maintenance of machinery and inform supervisor of these resources.
- Provide supervision of all machinery operation and maintenance activities undertaken at TASEZ to ensure that these activities are carried out safely and that all persons performing such activities are competent.
- Respond to mechanical incidents/emergencies, identify the root causes of these incidents and implement actions to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
- Diagnose mechanical issues using various root cause analysis techniques.
- Perform minor repairs and replace faulty components of machinery and test the equipment before commissioning.
- Install, assemble, and test new equipment or machinery according to the original manufacture’s specifications.
- Ensure that installations are performed safely and efficiently, adhering to manufacturer specifications, applicable standards and statutory requirements.
- Ensure that new mechanical installations are performed by competent persons and that these installations conform with the original manufacture’s specifications, statutory requirements and applicable standards.
Safety and Compliance:
- Develop, implement and maintain safe work procedures for maintenance of machinery in accordance with applicable statutory requirements and South African National Standards.
- Identify hazards, risks and continuous improvement opportunities for all machinery activities and implement actions to mitigate these risks or to improve work practices.
- Identify activities that require isolation of energy sources and enforce control measures to ensure that these activities are carried out safely and that all persons performing such activities are competent.
- Implement the organisation’s SHE policies and procedures and stop any activities that do not comply with these policies and procedures or statutory requirements and other applicable requirements.
- Ensure that all applicable permits and job-cards are issued to the maintenance service provider before any mechanical activities are undertaken by the maintenance service provider.
- Inspect all work performed by the machinery maintenance service provider and ensure that all statutory documents and records are maintained.
- Review proposed changes to mechanical installations and provide guidance on best practices and compliance requirements to implement these changes safely.
- Train mechanical assistants on the safe operational and work procedures.
- Report all incidents, non-conformances and non-compliances to supervisor as soon as these come to your attention, identify the root cause of these incidents, non-conformances and non-compliances and actions to prevent recurrence thereof.
- Develop tender specifications for the procurement of services providers and equipment.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Inform affected stakeholders of planned maintenance that may impact their operations.
- Maintain a list of emergency contacts related to the response to mechanical incidents.
- Work closely with other technicians, engineers, and production staff to ensure machinery operates smoothly.
- Provide input on process improvements and maintenance strategies.
- Communicate effectively with team members and management regarding maintenance issues and resolutions.
COMPETENCIES/KNOWLEDGE
- A successful candidate must have a good understanding of preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in maintenance.
- Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems
- Project Management
- Strong organizational and planning skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Proficiency with maintenance management software (e.g., CMMS) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and report writing
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Must have excellent understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety legal requirements.
- Must be in a possession of a valid drivers’ license
- Must be able to work flexible hours which include day and night-time operations
QUALIFICATIONS
- Engineering Diploma or equivalent in mechanical engineering
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993, General Machinery Regulations, 2014, Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, Lift, Escalator and Passenger Conveyor Regulations, 2010, Pressure Equipment Regulations, 2009
- Operation and maintenance of HVAC, Fire Systems, Plumbing, Roller Shutter Doors, Lifts and Driven Machinery
- Reading and interpretation of technical drawings
- Use of hand and power-driven tools

ATTRIBUTES
- Must have proven record of operating and maintenance of machinery
- Must be able to work overtime or stand-by in accordance with operational needs.
- Must be in a possession of a valid drivers’ license
- Must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
WORK EXPERIENCE
- 7 year post graduate experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery.
