The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) and is governed by a Board. The organisation is an authoritative voice for weather and climate related services in South Africa and is a member of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of: 
 
Senior Technologist 
Salary total package: Salary: Negotiable 
Centre: Bloemfontein

Job summary: 
To provide Technical service with specialised knowledge in operating, maintaining and repairing of infrastructure including performance analysis, Design assessment, document and process review. 
 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Assembling and installation of electronic weather systems. 
• Monitor and maintain weather infrastructure. 
• Maintain and repair upper air observation network. 
• Develop and update technical specifications. 
• Support regional technologists and ICT infrastructure. 
• Calibration and verification of observation equipment. 
• Execute plan maintenance activities. 
• Utilize work order system for maintenance activities. 
• Compile and update regional spares inventory. 
• Compile and provide feedback on regional queries and spares requirements. 
• Undertake regional audits and compile reports for maintenance and repairs. 
• Compile, analyse and submit monthly, quarterly and annual reports. 
• Prepare equipment and performance reports. 
• Compile, analyse and submit equipment performance reports. 
• Compile activity analysis and reports. 
• Compile risks, safety and TQM performance reports and action plans. 
• Document SOP and SWP. 
• Develop action plans related to non-conformance. 
 
 
Minimum Requirements and Attributes: 
 B-Tech Degree in Electronics/Electrical/ Communications Engineering is a necessity. 
 BEng/BSC Qualification will be an added advantage. 
 Professional Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is essential. 
 A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the design, development and maintenance of processes and knowledge of software programs. 
 Exposure and experience in maintenance management (planning and support services) is essential. 
 Experience in project management will be an added advantage. 
 Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is essential. 
 Good communication, interpersonal and analytical skills are essential. 
 Must demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning, coaching and mentoring. 
 A valid code 08 driver’s licence with own transport is essential. 
 Willingness and desire to travel to remote sites is essential.
