The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of:
Meteorological Forecaster Trainer
Regional Training Centre

Job Summary:
The position of Meteorological Forecaster Trainer is mainly responsible for delivering the Public Weather Service (PWS) theory and practical forecaster WMO competency related training, that includes satellite interpretation training as well as other courses within the Post Graduate Certificate in Weather Forecasting of SAWS and to further develop and enhance the courses to the international Public Weather Service competency requirements of WMO and the needs of internal and external stakeholders.
Key Performance Areas:
• Responsible for delivering and assisting in other courses within the Post Graduate Certificate in Weather Forecasting of SAWS and to further develop and enhance these courses for use within Public, Marine and Aviation Forecasting practical’s
• Responsible for satellite interpretation training of new and practising Forecasters
• Design, develop and deliver online, face to face or blended learning courses to commercial clients and SAWS employees
• Give lectures and practical training to other students of the Regional Training CentreTransfer all relevant courses onto the Moodle distance learning platform for online training delivery and keep them updated
• Identify risks within RTC and needs for procurement, etc
• Responsible for linking of other external stakeholders, especially training institutions like Universities with the Regional Training Centre and the Regional Training Centre with internal stakeholders such as PWS (DRR) Operations within SAWS to be able to ensure that all stakeholders are informed about any changes in the training and TC is informed about the changes suggested by stakeholders
• Actively partake in the continuous training/training needs of PWS Weather Forecasters in South Africa, South African Development Community (SADC) region and beyond
• Responsible for management of courses of own responsibility on the SAWS Moodle (course management) platform

• Administrative duties, including training needs analysis, student and monthly training reports sent to the Qualification Manager: Forecasting.
• Knowledge of all Regional Training Centre and South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) regulations as well as WMO competency requirements for Forecasters
• Stay abreast with the latest t developments in the meteorological environment to be able to give effective training
• Perform scientific research in the field of interest, to become a specialist in a certain Meteorological field
• Participate in Assessor and Moderator training and any other training required as per personal development plan
• Maintain the Total Quality Management platform of RTC with respect to the relevant courses
• Be actively involved in other research and international programmes because of the person’s expertise
• Represent the Regional Training Centre in regional and international Meteorological conventions from time to time
• As SAQA representative, keep abreast of the developments in SAQA and a relevant Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA)
• As a WMO recognised RTC, stay abreast with the latest developments in the field of forecasting such as PWS competencies
Minimum Requirements:
• BSc Hons Degree in Meteorology (specializing in Weather Forecasting) or Atmospheric Sciences degree which is Basic Instruction Package for Meteorologist (BIP-M) and with compliant WMO regulations.
• At least 2 years’ experience in meteorological forecasting practises of which Public Weather Service weather forecasting experience
• At least two years’ experience as a part time trainer/ facilitator/lecture of different courses or be mentored to give/develop training products
• Fluent in English
• Excellent knowledge and proficiency in weather observations will be an added advantage
Attributes and Competencies:

• Good communications skills (written and verbal) and ability to engage at all levels within the organisation and with various stakeholders
• Excellent Computer skills
• Excellent facilitation skills
• Sound knowledge of Meteorology
• Knowledge of all Regional Training Centre and South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) regulations as well as WMO competency requirements for Forecasters
