The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Environmental Affairs and is governed by a Board. The organisation is an authoritative voice for weather and climate related services in South Africa and is a member of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. South African Weather Service (SAWS) strives to be a Weather and Climate Centre of Excellence providing innovative solutions to ensure a weather-smart region, sustainable development and economic growth. 
 
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of:
 
Marine Engineer
Salary total package: R539 981 – R701 937

Key performance areas:
Technical Functions
• Working experience in Electronics, Electrical; Mechatronics and or mechanical engineering with special emphasis on marine infrastructure • Trouble shoot and perform maintenance functions on marine electronic equipment (including bench and field repairs) • Analyse breakdown • Service the maintenance plan and schedule • Ensure availability of spares in order to minimise downtime of marine observing platforms • oversee the performance of planned and unplanned maintenance • ensure achievement of SAWS annual performance plan and agreed KPIs wrt Marine infrastructure and data • software development (programming) with special emphasis on Marine data to become compatible with SAW current data management systems • development of dissemination platforms • development of cost effective earth observing system with special emphasis on marine infrastructure • Lead Ice buoy developments • lead National HF Radar Tender process which includes national specifications criteria • Lead SAWS contribution to DEA Marine infrastructure development, deployment and data transfer.
 
 
Project and Contractor Management
• Effectively plan and execute projects • Co-operate with all other stakeholders • Ensure that the contractors conform to safety and security requirements.
 
Administrative Functions
• Attend and contribute in departmental and other organisational meetings • Cooperate and adhere for requirements of performance agreements and assessments • Compile SCM documentation and participate in SCM committees as and when required • Adhere to time and attendance standards of the organisation • Comply with SAWS policies •Report writing and presentations • Assist with budget process • writing of funding proposals • provision of high level strategic reports • assist with budget preparations which includes MTEF proposals.
General Departmental Duties
• Health and Safety duties as required from time to time • Travel local, international and at sea • Serving in various task teams.
 
Minimum Requirements and Attributes:
• BSc:(Engineering) Experience in engineering Designs and Management of more than 5 years • MSc (Engineering) will be an added advantage • Professional Registration (ECSA). • Programming (e.g. Python, Matlab, C++, etc.)
• Electrical and electronic design and repairs • ICT skills (network communication, telemetry, HF/RF/Iridium communication) • Computer Literacy. • Analytical and presentation skills • Excellent organisational and key planning skills • Excellent communication skills (written & verbal) • Good interpersonal skills and Team player • Trained, skilled and able to work a theights up to 30m above ground. • Punctuality and ability to work under pressure • Adherence to SAWS regulations and policies • NO criminal record. • Commercial divers license will be an added advantage • Drivers license.
