The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of:
Manager: Climate Information

Job Summary:
The role of the Manager: Climate Information is to manage the Climate Information unit within the operations of the South African Weather Service with regard to matters pertaining to publishing near real-time weather data and related information for public good services and selling value-added climate data and related information as well as scientific publications for commercial services. Further responsibilities of this position are to oversee the improvement and extension of services to both public good and commercial clients of the Weather Service, and liaison with national and international organisations that are potential users of South African climate data and related information. In addition, the Manager: Climate Information will play a key role in coordinating the activities of the National Climate Centre in support of the National Framework for Climate Services.
Key Performance Areas:
• Manage the team responsible for delivering a public good service by publishing near real-time weather data and related information
• Manage the team responsible for delivering a public good and commercial service related to the provision of value-added climate data and related information and scientific publications
• Ensure the quality and consistency of climate data, products and services provided to clients
• Seek client requirements and tailor climate information services to meet those requirements
• Advise Senior Management of changing trends in the demand for climate services and the type of skills, personnel and equipment necessary to meet these demands
• Manage a costing structure for climate information and publications in compliance with the Finance Policy
• Liaise with national organisations in matters of publications, client services, relevant educational matters
• Answer complex climate and weather-related enquiries
• Maintain service-delivery related documents including but not limited to pricing models, pricelist for scientific publications, disclosure document and payment authorization form
• Maintain the documentation of processes and procedures with Climate Information for inclusion and use within the Quality Management System
• Ensure that all activities of the Climate Information unit take place within budgetary constraints and according to the relevant policies
• Provide monthly, quarterly reports and statistics specifically relating to activities of the Climate Information unit to the Line Manager for EXCO and Board meetings.
Minimum Requirements:
• BSc. Honours Degree (Atmospheric Science or related);
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in meteorology, climatology, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction or other relevant areas and;
• 3 years’ management experience
• Demonstrated ability to manage and engage with stakeholders across the value chain such as the media, national and international organizations, industry, universities etc;
• Code EB Drivers Licence (without endorsements)
• No international travel Restrictions
