The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE) and is governed by a Board. The organisation is an authoritative voice for weather and climate related services in South Africa and is a member of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. South African Weather Service (SAWS) strives to be a Weather and Climate Centre of Excellence providing innovative solutions to ensure a weather-smart region, sustainable development, and economic growth.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of:
FORECASTER (3 YEARS CONTRACT)

Centre: National Forecasting Center, Centurion
Job Summary:
The Forecaster is tasked to ensure provision of highest standard forecasting products and services to General public, commercial clients and Aviation Clients in line with national and international standards as well as best practices in support to the safety of life and property.
Key Performance Areas:
1. Weather forecasting and warning services
• Work shifts and provide weather forecasting products and services
• Monitor weather events and make decision in consultation with any other relevant office(s) as to the issue of warnings
• Monitor weather events and make decision in consultation with any other relevant office(s) as to the issue of warnings
• Communicate weather forecasts and warnings in writing and verbally
2. Internal and External Customer Relations:
• Liaise with clients as per office plan
• Represent SAWS at Stakeholder meetings as per plan
3. Training, Development and Knowledge Management
• Participate in all training activities related to weather forecasting within the office
4. Total Quality Management
• Apply prevention and corrective action procedures on all findings related to weather forecasting
• Promote a quality management culture amongst the staff within the office,
• Promote the SAWS Quality Policy and intergrade it into the day-to-day activities of the office,
• Provide assistance during audits of the office as required
• Ensure that the work environment complies with legislative requirements relations to OHS.

Minimum Requirements and Attributes:
• BSc Hons in Meteorology or Honours in a relevant Atmospheric Science (i.e. Basic Instruction Package for Meteorologists compliant – WMO BIP-M) with Forecasting Training.
• Ability to interpret numerical weather products.
• Ability to analyze and interpret weather charts, weather observations (surface and upper air) and weather codes, satellite imagery, and radar imagery.
• Computer/ programming literacy will be an added advantage as the individual will also work with media software.
• A valid Driver’s License.
