The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Environmental Affairs and is governed by a Board. The organisation is an authoritative voice for weather and climate related services in South Africa and is a member of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of:
Forecaster

Job Summary:
The Forecaster is tasked to ensure provision of highest standard forecasting products and services to General public, commercial clients, Marine and Aviation Clients in line with national and international standards as well as best practices in support to the safety of life and property.
Key performance areas:
• Work shifts and provide weather forecasting products and services which include specialized services such as aviation forecasting, severe weather forecasting to local disaster management structures, forecasts for the agricultural fraternity, sports and recreation, the marine industry and all other weather sensitive industries that may require specialized forecasts from time to time.
• Process, analyse and quality control meteorological data required for compilation of meteorological products and services.
• Research and publish meteorological-related articles, and/or research related to the improvement of meteorological process in collaboration with relevant departments where necessary.
• Quality control of Forecasting product and timely distribution thereof
• Monitor weather events and make decision in consultation with any other relevant office(s) as to the issue of warnings
• Self-Development (Keep abreast of new forecasting theories and techniques developed in weather services)
• Participate in the practical and theoretical training of new forecasters
• Assist with the implementation and compliance to the requirements of the SAWS Quality Management System.
Minimum Requirements and Attributes:
• BSc Hons in Meteorology or Honours in a relevant Atmospheric Science (i.e. Basic Instruction Package for Meteorologists compliant – WMO BIP-M) with Forecasting Training.
• Two years’ experience in a weather forecasting environment
• Extensive knowledge, skills and experience in all spheres of operational meteorology.
• Ability to interpret numerical weather products.
• Ability to analyse and interpret weather charts, weather observations (surface and upper air) and weather codes, satellite imagery, and radar imagery.
• Computer/ programming literacy will be an added advantage as the individual will also work with media software.
• Internal candidates to have a valid AMF competency certificate. External candidates to obtain AMF competency within 6 months of appointment.

Forecasters outside of South Africa must hand in proof of BIP-M compliance.
