SOUTH AFRICAN WEATHER SERVICE (SAWS)
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Affairs and is governed by a Board. The organisation is an authoritative voice for weather and climate related services in South Africa and is a member of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. SAWS strives to be a Weather and Climate Centre of Excellence providing innovative solutions to ensure a weather-smart region, sustainable development and economic growth.
The SAWS is therefore seeking to appoint a fit and proper person to undertake the role of an Accounting Officer in the capacity of:
Chief Executive Officer

Job Summary:
The position of Chief Executive Officer reports to the South African Weather Service Board. The successful candidate will be required to provide strategic leadership and direction to the organization in a manner which ensures that it can discharge its legislative mandate and obligations consistent with applicable national and international standards.
Key Responsibility Areas
Provide strategic leadership and direction for SAWS to achieve its mandate
Drive and steer implementation of SAWS 5-year strategy including key strategic projects in line with SAWS business cycle
Position SAWS services in the market through networks
Foster a high organisational performance culture and a corporate culture that promotes individual integrity, ethical practices and social responsibility
Ensure optimum balance between public mandate and that commercial goals are achieved
Manage all stakeholder relations and play an influential role to government and international stakeholders on meteorological issues and governance
Identify new markets and opportunities for commercial purposes
Ensure and increase the financial viability of the organization
Ensure the achievement and consistent compliance of ISO9000 accreditation
Ensure organizational adherence to world class corporate governance practices
Minimum Requirements:
Post graduate degree at Masters level and or MBA or equivalent
A post graduate qualification in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences or related sciences will be an added advantage
A minimum ten (10) years working experience in an Executive Position (previous experience as CEO would be an added advantage)
Solid knowledge of corporate governance in South Africa
Good understanding of Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and its regulations
Understanding of SAWS mandate and applicable regulations
Be able to work under pressure in a competitive science knowledge industry
Knowledge and Competency Requirements:
Excellent leadership and vision
Knowledge of Commercial Business, Business Development, Marketing and Strategic Management of Commercial Partners
Knowledge of SA Government priorities & regulatory frameworks
In-depth knowledge of corporate governance and general management best practices
Innovative, resource driven and visionary leader with a proven record of overall corporate leadership
Should exercise the care, diligence and skill as reasonably expected of a CEO
Excellent and highly developed human relations in a professional and unionised environment

Note:
The position will be based in Pretoria, and will entail both national and extensive international travelling (shortlisted candidates must not have any existing international travel restrictions);
All candidates are required to conform to section 13(5) of the South African Weather Service Act, 2013;
