POST: Captain
LOCATION: National Cold Case Investigative Unit, Operational Support, Monitoring and Evaluation Cold Case Unit, Head Office, Pretoria
LEVEL OF REMUNERATION (Band C) R370 908 per annum

Generic Requirements:
Applicant must display competency in the post-specific functions of the post;
be in possession of a Senior Certificate (Grade 12); or National Certificate (Vocational);
be proficient in at least two official languages, of which one must be English;
Must be a South African citizen;
Must have no previous criminal/departmental convictions or criminal or departmental cases pending; Be in possession of at least a valid light motor vehicle driver’s licence
Must not have visible tattoos when wearing the summer uniform;
Applicants will be subjected to a vetting process which will include security screening and fingerprint verification.
Computer literacy, interpersonal communication (verbal and written) and organising skills, report writing skills, communication and co-ordination skills may serve as an advantage.
Applicants must also be able to analyse problems and work under pressure.
Additional Requirements:
Be in a possession of at least a three (3) year Degree or Diploma recorded on the National Learner Record Database on NQF level 6 or higher in Police Science, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Social Sciences and Information Technology or other relevant field of study;
Candidates must have at least two (2) years’ experience in the field of the post, of which one (1) year should be on supervisory level. Experience in investigations will be an added advantage
Core Functions:
Administer all Cold Case Investigation related operations, as instructed by the Sub-section Commander.
Monitoring the assistance with planning, participation and evaluation of transnational/ national/ provincial operations where problem areas have been identified.
Planning of compliance interventions according to information received or requested from the Sub-section Commander.
Reporting of findings on intervention sessions and follow-up on identified dysfunctions.
Attending of meetings.
Receiving of requests for inputs and management information concerning the field of responsibility.
Overseeing conformation to- and applying standards for information security, as prescribed by the Minimum Information Security Standards and other legislation relating to the protection of information.
Improving of working relations between the section and members involved in other areas of policing (internal and external).
General:

* Certified copies of an applicant’s ID, Senior Certificate and all educational qualifications obtained, service certificates of previous employers stating the occupation, proof of relevant experience in the field of the post and motor vehicle driver’s license (if applicable).
* The copies must be correctly certified on the copy itself, not at the back. The certification must not be older than three months.
* Qualifications and driver’s licences submitted will be subjected to verification checking with the relevant institutions. The South African Police Service will verify the residential address of applicants and conduct reference checks.
* Appointment will be made in terms of the SAPS Act, 1995 as applicable to the post environment.
* Applicants appointed under the Police Service Act will be subjected to a medical assessment by a medical practitioner as determined by SAPS prescripts.
* Applicants appointed under the Police Service Act will be subjected to undergo a lateral entry training programme at a SAPS training institution, where applicable.
* Applications must be mailed timeously. Late applications will not be accepted or considered.

* If a candidate is short-listed, it can be expected of him/her to undergo a personal interview as well as a practical assessment.
* Reference checking will be conducted on all short listed applicants.
* Short-listed candidates for appointment to certain identified posts, will be vetted in terms of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 2007 (Act No 32 of 2007) and the Children’s Act, 2005 (Act No 38 of 2005). A candidate, whose particulars appear in either the National Register for Sex Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register, will be disqualified from appointment to that post.
* All short-listed candidates will be subjected to fingerprint screening.
