Job Profile:
Perform routine and ad-hoc maintenance activities in accordance with the prescribed quality management program within the SAFARI-1 Research Reactor. The incumbent must be able to work in a team and perform routine maintenance and fault finding on electronic & instrumentation systems and subsystems relating to the SAFARI-1 Nuclear and Process systems.
Key Performance Areas
Key responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:
- Perform maintenance (electronic / instrumentation) activities as required in accordance with the various specification requirements of the Safety Analysis Report (SAR), maintenance programs, legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Assist with maintenance and repair work on various Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) systems throughout the SAFARI-1 plant.
- Assist with electronic fault finding and repair work on various systems throughout the SAFARI-1 plant.
- Ensure that quick and accurate calibrations are performed on an on-going basis during shutdown periods in conjunction with the various quality and maintenance systems and programmes.
- Update and control drawings as required in the management systems, as applicable.
- Evaluate conditions applicable to non-conformance in the plant and pro-actively identify (together with operational and technical staff) the appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
- Problem solving of ad-hoc faults and problems reported on the Request for Maintenance (RFM) and to ensure that the facility stays in operation and that regulatory and specification are adhered to.
- Support SAFARI-1 with specialised projects and on development of new facilities.
- Update and record data in the store control database for controlling stock levels.
- Administrative, ensuring that an effective documentation and records system are maintained.
- Coach and mentor staff on an on-going basis.

Qualifications and Experience:
- National Diploma in Electronics.
- Thorough knowledge of nuclear facilities and the various regulatory requirements will be a huge advantage.
- Printed Circuit Board (PCB) level repair work is a definite requirement.
- PCB repair and soldering techniques will be an added advantage.
- Computer literate preferably with programming skills.
- At least 5 to 10 years applicable experience with preferably 5 years in an instrumentation maintenance environment.
- Driver’s license and own transport: the incumbent will be required to work after hours and placed on standby duties as needed.
- The incumbent must be medically fit to qualify as a radiation worker and chemical worker.

POST REQUIREMENTS
The incumbent will undergo different Phases of training as a learner reactor operator at the SAFARI-1 Research Reactor. The incumbent will perform routine tasks under supervision and undergoes extensive theoretical and practical training. Phase I training must be completed successfully within 6 to 9 months where after the incumbent can be appointed as a Plant Operator and will start with Phase II of training. At phase II the incumbent will perform certain tasks without supervision. Further theoretical and practical training will be presented over a period of 12 months. Upon successful completion of Phase II training (maximum of 12 months allowed) the incumbent can be appointed as a Licensed Reactor Operator (should there be a vacant position and subject to the recruitment process). The Licensed Reactor Operator is responsible directly to the Duty Shift Supervisor for the execution of all routine tasks and special tasks related to the control and selective maintenance of the Research Reactor and experiments.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Prepared to work shifts.
- In-service training will be offered.
- The incumbent must be medically fit in order to qualify as a noise; radiation and chemical worker.
- The in-service training will be in English – therefore the ability to communicate well in spoken and written English will be a prerequisite.
- Persons will be required to undergo, amongst others, tests for suitable comprehension of Mathematics and English concepts.
- Must have own transport.
- Must be able to work effectively in a team.
- High integrity, dedicated and time management
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Technical Diploma in Engineering (preferably Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics). Preference will be given to persons with experience in process plants.
- Computer literacy.
- Have a Code EB (old Code 08) driver’s licence at the date of appointment.

Job Profile:

The incumbent (Plant Artisan) must be able to work in a team and perform routine maintenance and fault finding on mechanical systems, subsystems relating to the SAFARI-1 Nuclear Process systems and Building.
Key Performance Areas
Key responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:
- Assist the mechanical section head with management of the mechanical maintenance workshop and subordinates (2 Artisans 1 Assistant, 2 Students, ±20 contractors and all SAFARI-1 personnel for mechanical maintenance related tasks), planning and coordinating maintenance activities and job cards as required in accordance with the various specifications of the SAR, maintenance programmes, legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure that all scheduled maintenance activities, performed during shutdown periods, are attended to and completed in time and accurately. Any breakdowns need to receive immediate attention and often require innovating and original ideas in order to find solutions for sometimes complex problems.
- Routine mechanical maintenance on pumps, fans, motors (mechanical aspects), valves, compressors, building, hand tools, reactor components and systems as indicated in the various maintenance programs.
- Tasks relating to work that can be performed irrespective of reactor operation are for example, preparations for maintenance activities during shutdowns, installation and commissioning of equipment, production of small and modification of existing items, etc.
- Purchasing - Control purchasing of materials/spares for all upgrades/modifications and non-routine maintenance. Liaise with suppliers to ensure that the most suitable item or equipment is obtained at the best possible price.
- Support all members of the maintenance team as required. Support with maintenance on radiation facilities.
- Routine and statutory inspections of pumps, fans, overhead cranes and ladders, building etc.
- Supervision and assistance to riggers during inspections of lifting equipment.
- Support with modification of reactor components and equipment.
- Ensure that maintenance equipment is in good state and use calibrated equipment, when required.
- Perform specialised task as requested on the maintenance request programme.
- Follow-up preventive and corrective actions as required from the maintenance request programme.
- Manufacture of small items and components w.r.t. the above mentioned.
- Report on event / non-conformances investigation.
- Maintain an effective documentation and records system on completed maintenance work.
- Prepare work procedures and checklists (i.e. commissioning –plans, calibration checklists, work procedures, etc.), including the updating of mechanical drawings.
- Assist and support with ensuring the continual upgrading and revision of the relevant mechanical maintenance documentation and programs (RR-MPR-0003, etc.)
- Administrate the maintenance store(s) to ensure that critical items are available and controlled as required.
- Provide training to all groups concerned in SAFARI-1 regarding new and existing equipment and maintenance programmes.
- Support QHSE management system requirements and continuously ensure compliance through ISO and other standards. Also provide support during compliance audits, both internal and external.

- Machining experience is a definite requirement.
- Computer literate.
- Valid driver’s license and own transport: the incumbent will be required to work after hours and placed on standby duties as needed.
