The successful candidate will conduct monitoring and research on the interrelations between humans and natural environments. Requirements
- A minimum of an MSc or MA degree in an appropriate field of social-ecological science
- Three to five years of relevant experience
- A PhD in an appropriate field of social-ecological science will be a significant advantage
- Proven publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
- Excellent writing, verbal communication and networking skills.
- A sound knowledge of conservation practices and principles, especially those relating to protected areas and sustainable resource use.
- Demonstrated proficiency with qualitative and quantitative research methods, data analysis and report writing.
- Passion and commitment to bridging the gap between society and parks, and comfortable in transdisciplinarity (especially biological and social realms)
- Excellent interpersonal and relational skills.
- Research leadership and supervision experience would be advantageous.
- Experience with facilitating social processes, such as focus group meetings and stakeholder dialogues is a distinct advantage.
- A valid Code B driver’s license and own transport.
- Able and willing to travel extensively to national parks and regularly conduct fieldwork.
- Understanding climate change, particularly ecosystem-based adaptation, is an added advantage.
Responsibilities
- Conducting, coordinating and overseeing both academic and applied research to address socio-ecological issues related to, for example, material and non-material benefits derived from nature, environmental governance, stakeholder perceptions, relationships and engagement
- Developing and implementing relevant monitoring programmes, with emphasis on sustainable resource use initiatives, tourism, and community benefit projects.
- Collaborating with scientists of other disciplines on social aspects of their research.
- Keeping abreast of current scientific thinking and peer-reviewed literature and pursuing appropriate academic development and growth to maintain scientific credibility and recognition.
- Publishing research findings in scientific journals and popular media
- Translating research and monitoring outputs into appropriate policy and management guidelines
- Inputting to or collaborating on relevant cultural heritage, ecosystem-based adaptation, environmental education and/or community benefit projects.
- Developing networks with external scientists and stakeholders towards greater involvement in collaborative projects.
- Representing SANParks at relevant conferences, meetings, committees and workshops.
- Work planning and scheduling, budget control, and general administration.

Responsibilities
- Assist in preparing the AFS/IFS in accordance with GRAP- quarterly, interim, and annual.
- Assist in performing special analysis of major issues as required and recommend solutions to complex business issues.
- Assist Senior Manager in coordinating annual training on GRAP compliance requirements.
- Provide coaching and mentoring to finance staff on new GRAP standards and treasury regulations.
- Oversee the assessment of internal systems controls, identify gaps and recommend strategies for improvement.

MANAGER: LAND ADMINISTRATION PARK PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
A challenging opportunity currently exists for a confident, team-oriented and highly motivated Manager: Land Administration to manage all SANParks land information and coordinate land administration processes in the Park Planning Unit for protected area expansion. A key focus will be on the protected area expansion agenda and related land administration processes. The successful candidate will report to the General Manager: Park Planning and Development and will be based at either the Port Elizabeth, Cape Town or Pretoria Offices.

Requirements
- Be in possession of a postgraduate graduate degree in Environmental Law, Administrative Law or Property Law
- Be in possession of a Legal degree (B Juris, B Proc, LLB) and an Admitted Attorney
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in the environmental, conservation or land sector (clearly stated in CV)
- Experience with Contract, Property and Administrative law (clearly stated in CV)
- Experience with legal agreements related to protected areas or biodiversity stewardship or land would be an advantage (clearly stated in CV)

Responsibilities
- To support the protected area expansion processes through:
- leading the drafting of land purchase and contract national park agreements in consultation with legal services and attorneys.
- supporting land acquisition processes for the organisation, including expropriation as required.
- managing property subdivisions, land surveying, SG diagrams, boundary verification and land exchange processes as required.
- coordinating internal approvals and submissions for, and tracking all park declaration processes and title deed endorsements on behalf of SANParks (as a primary focal point) in close consultation with DFFE- and SANParks Legal Services and maintaining an up-to-date database on all declarations
- To oversee and manage databases pertaining to land owned and managed by the organisation as well as contractual national park land owned by private and communal land owners (including copies of the title deeds).
- To maintain all land registers as current and accessible for SANParks.
- To manage the SANParks land audit process, and coordinate and address matters identified in the land audits.
- To draft terms of reference for consultants and assist in the management of consultants for land-related matters as required.
To build and maintain stakeholder relationships (internal and external) - To give input on legislation and policy that are relevant for SANParks’ land management and park expansion and input into EIA-related comments and appeals.
- To supervise staff and mentor interns on land administration-related matters.
