MANAGER: WATER RESOURCES
Park: Kruger National Park
 
Description:
Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the position of Manager: Water Resources in the Kruger National Park reporting to the General Manager: Regional Integration and planning, with cross-reporting to the Conservation Management department. The position will be based remotely at the Phalaborwa or the Hoedspruit satellite offices, reporting to the Skukuza office.
 
Purpose:
To ensure sustainable management of water resources in the Kruger National Park and conservation of its freshwater ecosystems, focusing on broader catchment management collaboration, including at the transboundary Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area level.
 
Requirements:

• A Master's of Science degree with a specific focus on water resources management, freshwater ecology or similar as a minimum, with a PhD being preferred
• Professional registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP)
• 4 to 6 years of experience in water resource management preferably in mid to senior management, with relevant project management experience
• Good knowledge of relevant legislation, public participation processes, water quality monitoring and basic knowledge of GIS
• Computer literacy and valid driver's license (Code 08)
• Risk management and problem-solving skills
• Strategic planning and stakeholder engagement experience
• Ability to work independently
• Good communication skills, written and verbal, interpersonal and analytical and technical report writing skills

 
Responsibilities:

• To maintain, update and implement catchment management plans, and strategies of the park through coordination with both upstream and downstream institutions.
• To influence and support decision-making regarding the management of freshwater resources within the KNP.
• Continue the implementation of environmental water requirements and resource quality objectives of rivers flowing through the KNP.
• To guide responsible resource use practices in the KNP (including both biotic and abiotic resources).
• Further develop the KNP's freshwater management and monitoring program at a transboundary scale in the interests of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation and transboundary water resources management objectives.
• Coordinate and represent SANParks at a national and regional level on sustainable water resources and ecosystem management, including that of Ramsar sites.
• To coordinate resourcing and funding of the KNP River management section to deliver on current and future operational needs.
• Coordinate and give inputs into EIAs and WUL applications.
• To maintain cooperative management of water resources, through stakeholder outreach and create awareness in catchment areas around the park to garner the support of the park's water management initiatives.
• To enable capacity transfer for freshwater ecosystem management in co-managed protected areas.
• Coordinate and where necessary solicit research projects that support the adaptive management of freshwater ecosystem objectives of the KNP Management plan, as well as the Parks' integrated water management needs.
• Coordinate the KNP Freshwater teams' efforts across various departments.
• Provide mentoring support to KNP interns within catchment management programmes.
• Integrate the above with internal processes such as water services and disaster management responses.

DRIVER (EC1): WILDLIFE PRODUCTS SECTION, SKUKUZA
Park: Kruger National Park
Description:
Challenging position exists for a Driver at Wildlife Products Section within Marula Region in Kruger National Park.
 
Requirements:

• Minimum Grade 12 qualification
• Minimum three (3) years of driving experience in the Heavy Articulated Vehicle with a mounted crane.
• Code EC 1 license with a valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP)
• Literate (read and write) in the SANParks communication language (English)
• Good communication, interpersonal skills, and organizational background.

 
Responsibilities:

• Driving a Heavy Articulated vehicle with a total weight of <16000 Kg
• Knowledge of operating a truck-mounted crane.
• Transport Equipment, Goods and Passengers inside and or outside the park
• Collect carcasses from the bush and deliver them to Skukuza Abattoir within the regulated time.
• Take responsibility for goods from point of loading to point of delivery.
• Take responsibility for issued fuel card(s).
• Take responsible use, operation and care of the vehicle in possession at all times.
• Wash and dry the vehicle shortly after offloading carcasses. Sterilize the loader using approved chemicals.
• Daily inspection of the vehicle according to a prescribed inspection sheet.
• Daily completion of trip sheets
• Monthly completion of the vehicle log sheet
• Monthly completion of overtime sheet.

Description:
A vacancy exists for a Supply Chain Management Practitioner to manage the sourcing of goods and services in accordance with the relevant applicable legislations and SANParks procurement policies and procedures at a regional level. BIODIVERSITY STEWARDSHIP FACILITATOR (PARK PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT UNIT)
Park: Addo Elephant National Park
 
Description:
A vacancy exists for the position of a Biodiversity Stewardship facilitator to implement biodiversity stewardship activities in the Greater Addo to Amathole Node for the GEF 7 Project "Catalyzing Financing and Capacity for the Biodiversity Economy around Protected Areas". This project is supported by the World Bank and financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The project aims "to leverage financial resources and improve capacity to implement the Biodiversity Economy and increase benefits from selected Protected Area landscapes to local communities". The project will help to transform South Africa's wildlife economy to become inclusive and sustainable, supporting land reform beneficiaries and other communities in the project landscapes.
The position will be stationed in the Addo Elephant National Park and will report to the Park Expansion Manager.
 
Requirements:

• A recognised postgraduate qualification in environmental or natural resource management.
• Minimum of 5 years experience in biodiversity stewardship facilitation and protected area management. Experience in stakeholder engagement with rural and agricultural farming communities will be an added advantage.
• At least 5 years experience in community-based project management and implementation.
• Conflict and relationship management skills.
• Ability to speak, read and write English; fluency in isiXhosa and/or Afrikaans is an advantage.
• A valid South African resident status.
• Good report writing and presentation skills.
• Basic GIS knowledge will be an added advantage.

Responsibilities:

• Identify, discuss and assess options/models for land expansion through biodiversity Stewardship in communal and private land.
• Build on existing engagements that have been undertaken with landowners who have expressed an interest in having their land declared as part of the national park or supporting buffer protected areas.
• Facilitate the necessary legal and technical support for the signing of conservation agreements and/or the declaration.
• Design, implement and monitor land-use management plans.
• Interact with the landowners to assist with the extension of sound biodiversity-friendly management practices to ensure the conservation objectives are met on the ground.
• Explore biodiversity-compatible land use options (such as game-ranching, nature-based tourism, or sustainable offtake of wildlife and harvesting of medicinal plants) with landowners and communities for optimal, responsible utilization of their land.
• Provide commenting support on identified Environmental Impact Assessments in the buffer zone of the Addo Elephant National Park and engage relevant local and district municipalities on biodiversity and expansion matters in the Integrated Development Plan and Spatial Development Framework.
• Link communities to business development and capacity development support programmes of the project aimed at improving sustainable benefits from the protected area network.
• Assist in the development of strategic institutional arrangements and representative structures amongst landowners in the landscape.
• Establish and ensure the smooth operation of all the co-management and extension structures.
• Link communities with relevant structures including the private sector for support and for partnership purposes.
• Share lessons learnt from the node nationally and internationally through the Global Wildlife Program - for replication and scale-up.

• Assist and conduct investigations relating to any environmental crime negatively impacting on SANParks as and when required.

GEF 7 STEWARDSHIP MANAGER

Description:
A vacancy exists for the position of Stewardship Manager to coordinate and facilitate the community stewardship activities for the Greater Kruger Node as part of the Global Environment Facility project (GEF 7) entitled "Catalyzing Financing and Capacity for the Biodiversity Economy around Protected Areas". This project is supported by the World Bank and financed through GEF. The project aims "to leverage financial resources and improve capacity to implement the Biodiversity Economy and increase benefits from selected Protected Area landscapes to local communities". The project will seek to transform South Africa's wildlife economy to become inclusive and sustainable, supporting land reform beneficiaries and other communities in the project landscapes. The position will be stationed at Phalaborwa and will report to the General Manager: KNP Regional Integration and Planning.
 
Requirements:

• A recognised three-year postgraduate tertiary qualification in conservation/environmental/natural resource management or similar
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in biodiversity stewardship facilitation, agreements and protected area management
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in bioregional conservation programmes and partnerships.
• Experience of liaison with Traditional authorities, DALRRD, Local government, Conservation authorities, and implementation within rural contexts
• Experience in setting up conservation-related governance structures
• Experience in implementing conservation projects in the Greater Kruger landscape

Responsibilities:

• Scoping of stewardship areas: scoping of targeted implementation area of the project and stakeholder consultation, to prioritise land parcels for stewardship support.
• Stakeholder relationships: develop a "tiered" stakeholder engagement approach to strengthen and/or coordinate actions around a shared vision of the biodiversity economy for the Greater Kruger GEF 7 node through multi-stakeholder arrangements.
• Technical support and project facilitation:
  • facilitation of negotiations with community partners
  • support to the development of Governance structures
  • technical support for stewardship models most applicable to targeted land parcels, inclusive of the legal declaration of stewardship sites;
  • technical support to the development of land use plans
  • support to the development of ecological and conservation management plans
  • support the development of project implementation plans for the biodiversity economy projects;
  • support processes relating to the consent of land right users, DALRRD and conservation authorities
  • preparation of stewardship agreements
  • monitoring of stewardship agreements
  • training and mentoring support for stewardship project partners
• Developing and supporting an enabling environment:
  • identification of existing projects, partnerships, and the unlocking of new opportunities, that could enhance the stewardship site conservation and socio-economic outcomes and sustainability
  • development of a partnership strategy with NGOs, Research institutions, DALRRD and key structures relevant to land and stewardship matters within the region

Requirements:

• A recognised three-year postgraduate tertiary qualification in conservation/environmental/natural resource management or similar, with a preference for a four-year degree
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in the biodiversity economy, land use planning, protected area management and stewardship, rural development, capacity building in the environmental context, and socio-economic models pertaining to protected areas within the Greater Kruger Protected area.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in project coordination. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in interacting with a diverse range of role players and experience in bioregional conservation projects and liaison with Local government, implementation within rural contexts, and with a sound understanding i.t.o socio-economic models pertaining to protected areas
• Knowledge of all relevant conservation and environment legislation and statutory processes (IDP, SDF, spatial planning). Clearly list the legislation and statutory processes you have knowledge of in your CV.
• Demonstrate a clear understanding and past involvement in cooperative management models.
• Ability to speak, read and write English
• Ability to speak, read and write in isiTsonga or TshiVenda is an advantage

• Landscape planning: coordinate the development of the Biodiversity Economy Node Master Plan for the landscape site, at local, meso- and macro level.
• Municipal and sector planning processes: integrate the Greater Kruger biodiversity economy nodes and socio-economic plans, guided by the Greater Kruger Strategic Development Programme, into the local municipal planning processes, the District Service Delivery Models, K2C and Vhembe Biospheres, Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA), catchment planning and sector processes.
• Stewardship programme: oversee and provide strategic support to the GEF 7 stewardship programme, including participation in relevant Provincial and National Strategic processes, and declaration of Contractual National Park and other protected areas. This includes supporting communities to participate in biodiversity stewardship agreements and expand land under conservation in the nodes.
• Socio-economic and livelihood opportunities: oversee, with the GEF 7 Economic Project Leads, the adaption of the Biodiversity Economy Node Master Plans into investment frameworks, including identifying potential anchor investments suitable to each GEF 7 cluster, and the associated development of feasibility studies and business plans. This includes supporting SMMEs in the implementation areas: training on business planning/expansion; mentorship and grants, and roll-out of the IFC Financing plan outcomes.
• Governance arrangements: inform and/or obtain expert support to guide beneficiation strategies and structures, land tenure and legal considerations, and facilitate engagement with DALRRD, COGTHA and Traditional authority structures in support of the project outcomes.
• Spatial planning and modelling: mainstream the Greater Kruger land use buffer and fine-scale conservation planning processes into a range of the Greater Kruger Strategic Development Programme strategic instruments, including ecosystem-based adaptation processes, OECMS, Bioregional plans, and site-specific land use plans. This includes providing support for site-specific plans for community-owned land to inform conservation and development land-use options on the piece of the land, after which more detailed feasibility studies and business plans can be conducted.
• Human capital management: oversee the GEF 7 staff, and provide the necessary support for Human Capital development, through the GEF 7, and associated partner programmes.
• Monitoring, evaluation, learning: maintain an effective monitoring, evaluation and learning system to ensure adequate knowledge transfer. To ensure cost-efficient, timely, and quality delivery of project activities and results, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and project reporting. This also includes sharing lessons learned from the three GEF 7 project nodes, at the national level, and internationally through the Global Wildlife Program - for replication and scale-up.
