BIOINFORMATICS & SCIENCE MANAGER
Park: Table Mountain National Park
 
Description:
A challenging vacancy exists for a Bioinformatics and Science Support Manager, based at the Cape Research Centre, working with the Scientific Services division of South African National Parks (SANParks). The successful candidate will lead and coordinate an initiative to modernise biological species data management at SANParks.
Salary scale: D4 level.
This two-year contract position will be based at the Cape Research Centre, in the Tokai section of Table Mountain National Park, Cape Town.
 
Requirements:
  • MSc degree in Natural Science/Information Science or equivalent qualification.
  • Five years of working experience in an ecological field and/or bioinformatics-related field.
  • Five years of project management/coordination experience
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in data management, including in database development.
  • Experience managing teams and project finances
  • Strong experience in manipulation and analysis of large datasets from different sources
  • Sound understanding of taxonomy and South Africa's biodiversity datasets
  • Good working knowledge of GIS
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A driver's license and willingness to travel to national parks across the country
Preferred
  • PhD degree in Natural Science/Information Science.
  • Experience working with geographically-dispersed project teams.
  • Experience writing peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Demonstrated experience and networking within South Africa's bioinformatics community, especially with SANBI’s biodiversity information systems team.
  • Experience working with GBIF data and APIs.
  • Experience working with Excel, Access, BRAHMS and Specify software.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Manage and administer a complex two-year national-scale project
  • Oversee a project team and manage finance according to SANParks’ policies and procedures
  • Coordinate development of knowledge systems and facilitate data management, synthesis and use for informing SANParks' conservation actions
  • Manage relationships with the donor and project partners, including SANBI

VISUAL DATA SCIENTIST
Park: Table Mountain National Park
 
Description:
A vacancy exists for a Visual data scientist in the Scientific Services division of South African National Parks (SANParks). The successful candidate will apply a suitable system for managing visual records, including capturing, storing, managing and analysing image datasets, such as baited remote underwater videos (BRUVs), images from camera traps, remote sensing imagery and drone imagery, across all parks and nodes. The position will include the rescue and collation of potentially vast biodiversity and habitat information resources to set up opportunities for interpretation and analysis of trends over decades. There is some flexibility in the final placement of the successful candidate, depending on their particular skills and preference.
Salary scale: D3 level.
This two-year contract position will be based at Table Mountain, Garden Route or Kruger National Parks.
 
Requirements:
  • MSc in Natural Science/Information Science or equivalent qualification.
  • Three years of working experience in an ecological field and/or bioinformatics-related field.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in visual data management.
  • Strong experience in manipulation and analysis of large visual datasets from different sources
  • Capable of writing code for detecting biological trends such as species abundance, occurrence, habitat preference and activity patterns from photographs and videos.

Preferred

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct an inventory of visual datasets, including BRUV and camera trap data, and their locations
  • Develop a strategy and operational plan for capturing, managing and sharing these data
  • Conduct visual data capture, collation, interpretation and analysis
  • Develop and mobilise a strategy for documenting and storing SANParks visual data
  • Store, manage and mobilise visual datasets

Description:
A vacancy exists for a Biodiversity Information Scientist for the Arid and Central Nodes of the Scientific Services division of South African National Parks (SANParks). The successful candidate will provide data management and support functions for node research focused on the arid zone and central national parks. This includes herbarium curation, data capture, management, storage and analysis, including spatial data.
Salary scale: D3 level
This two-year contract position will be based at the Arid Research Unit in Kimberley.
 
Requirements:
  • MSc in Natural Science/Information Science or equivalent qualification.

Salary Scale: Patterson D3 band
This two-year contract position will be based in Skukuza in Kruger National Park.
 
Requirements:
  • At least an MSc in Natural Science
  • Three years of post-graduate working experience in an ecological field and/or bioinformatics-related field.
  • Proven record of accomplishment of scientific writing, including first author peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, scientific assessments and reports.

SCIENTIST: FRESHWATER & ESTUARINE SYSTEMS KNOWLEDGE COLLATION
Park: Garden Route National Park
 
Description:
A vacancy exists for a freshwater and estuarine knowledge collation scientist in the Scientific Services division of South African National Parks (SANParks). The successful candidate will locate, review and synthesise existing literature (peer-reviewed and grey) and important findings from ongoing research (by SANParks and external researchers) across parks to produce various State of Knowledge reports for freshwater and estuarine systems. The incumbent will be based in the Garden Route & Frontier Research Unit, working out of our offices in either Knysna or Sedgefield. S/he will work closely with SANParks scientists and managers on this critical project. The incumbent should be highly motivated and able to work independently, have a demonstrated track record in information synthesis, and have very strong scientific writing skills and experience. S/he will join a dynamic group of scientists and must be a team player, able to integrate diverse information to produce knowledge for applied management needs.
Salary Scale: Patterson D3 Band
This two-year contract position will be based at the Rondevlei (preferably) or Knysna office of Scientific Services in the Garden Route National Park.
 
Requirements:
  • At least an MSc in the appropriate Natural Science field.
  • At least three years of post-graduate working experience in an ecological field Sound knowledge and understanding of the diversity and functioning of freshwater and estuarine ecosystems in South Africa.
  • Experience working in freshwater and estuarine social-ecological systems.

Requirements:

  • Manage all operations and business processes within the Kruger National Park (KNP).
