The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires the services of hardworking and self-motivated individuals to render labour intensive support for the maintenance and development of the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and its associated estate and nurseries.
 
The successful candidates must be willing to work independently as well as in a team. The nature of these positions requires hard and physical labour and applicants must be willing to work outdoors. Applicants must be S.A Citizens and reside within the local municipality where the Kirstenbosch garden is based (proof of residence will be required i.e. letter from the ward committee/ traditional authority or utility bill). An applicant must be physically and medically fit to do manual labour.
 
Key responsibilities:
Among other duties, the successful candidates will be expected to perform manual labour including (Experience in any of the above work activities will be an added advantage) :
  • Cleaning paths and walkways, general garden maintenance such as weeding, cleaning and planting, edging of beds, mulching and composting, removing of plants and clearing of overgrown shrubs, opening and cleaning of streams and removing fallen branches and tree stumps;
  • Assisting with alien invasive clearing, and repairing paths and trails on the mountain, waste collection, erosion control, road maintenance, fencing repairs and maintenance
  • Propagation of plants and performing specialized garden maintenance under supervision
  • Cleaning of equipment and tools, cleaning inside and around nurseries, parking areas and buildings
  • Adhere to health and safety requirements.
  • Partake in training and development activities

DIRECTOR: CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a highly motivated individual to provide strategic leadership and direction, and champion SANBI’s programme of work on climate change adaptation. This will include providing technical leadership for bridging science, policy and practice interface associated with the biodiversity climate change nexus, and supporting resource mobilisation efforts associated with SANBI’s accreditation with the Green Climate Fund and Adaptation Fund.
 
This position requires a postgraduate degree in Social Sciences/ Life Sciences/Natural Sciences/Ecology/Biology/Botany or equivalent and relevant postgraduate qualification at NQF level 8.  A relevant postgraduate qualification at NQF level 9 will be an added advantage. This position also requires a minimum of 10 years of work experience in the relevant field, 5 years of which should be at middle management level. The successful candidate will be required to acquire a Senior Management Service Pre-entry Certificate offered by National School of Government, before assumption of duty.
 
The following competencies are critical for the candidate to be successful in this position: technical expertise in biodiversity and climate change adaptation, comprehensive knowledge and experience in the development and oversight/ implementation of large donor funded projects, in a multi-disciplinary context that includes natural resource management, biodiversity and or climate change adaptation, knowledge and experience in engaging with government and non-government stakeholders and a track record of building and managing stakeholder relationships, an understanding and experience of policies, procedures, processes, practices, systems, and frameworks related to climate change adaptation in South Africa and internationally will be advantageous. Strong leadership capabilities and management skills; professional writing and editing skills; strong project management skills; proven ability to think strategically, analyse information logically, and exercise sound judgement; ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member whilst being reliable, quality and cost conscious; a clear-thinker who is able to solve complex and challenging problems; advanced planning, organizing, interpersonal skills; excellent communication skills (both verbal and written); computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (MS Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook). The possession of a valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel nationally and internationally is essential.
 
Key Performance Responsibilities include:
  • Provide leadership and direction in the development of SANBI’s strategy and building of institutional capacity for climate change adaptation and provide strategic inputs into SANBI-wide processes and procedures;
  • Lead the development of SANBI’s proposal development pipeline in support of resource mobilisation for climate change adaptation, and processes to strengthen the institutional and enabling environment for this work;
  • Provide strategic leadership for SANBI’s and South Africa’s programme of work in Ecosystem based Adaptation, across the science, policy and implementation interface;
  • Facilitate climate change or ecosystem based adaptation for sustainable development, reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience to climate change in multiple sectors as human settlements, health, water and biodiversity, disaster risk reduction and early warning systems;
  • Bridge the science policy interface for climate change adaptation;
  • Support the coordination and implementation of SANBI climate change adaptation programmes;
  • Maintain relationships with national and international partners;
  • Facilitate team management, Human Capital Development, change and transformation within the Directorate; and
  • Ensure proper governance, effective risk management and compliance to applicable legislation.

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for four self-motivated individuals to care for the National Zoological Garden animals according to the required global standards of animal husbandry and welfare, as well as maintenance and management of their enclosures in which they live.
 
This position requires a Grade 10, job specific qualification, or equivalent qualification with NQF 2 with 5 years of work experience in the relevant field, or a Grade 12, job specific qualification, or equivalent qualification with NQF 4 with 4 years of work experience in the relevant field. Higher certificate in Nature Conservation or equivalent qualification at NQF 5 will be an added advantage.
 
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: a passion for animals and knowledge of captive animal husbandry; be able to operate and function under pressure and after hours whilst being quality, cost, and safety conscious; proven ability to work with a diverse team and independently; be able to operate within the framework of the approved standard operating procedures; good planning, organizing, interpersonal, time management, and problem solving skills; excellent communication skills (both verbal and written); computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, Internet and Outlook) will be advantageous. THREE POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS ON BIOLOGICAL INVASIONS

  2. Collating and interpreting data on the impact of invasive species to facilitate decisions
  3. From biodiversity observations to national-level reports to action
Three post-doctoral fellowship are available to conduct research as part of the South African National Biodiversity Institute’s work on biological invasions. These projects all share the same feature.  In working at the interface of research, management, and policy, post-doctoral researchers brought on board would both do high-quality research, producing results that have impact (e.g., on the regulations or on how plants are managed). The positions thus provide opportunities for post-docs to develop their skills and bring new skills in the context of real-world problems.
Value R 300,000 p.a. for 2 years

Requirements
Post-doctoral research funding is open to anyone who has completed their PhD in the last five years (not including any gaps in working or pro rata part-time positions) or can provide evidence that their PhD will be awarded shortly.
