ANIMAL CONSERVATION OFFICER – AQUARIUM (FISH, AMPHIBIANS AND AQUATIC INVERTEBRATES)

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to plan and implement day-to-day care of the animals and the supervision of animal conservation workers in their sections.
 
This position requires a national diploma in Zoology, Nature Conservation, Game Ranch Management, Animal Health or equivalent qualification at NQF 6 with 4 years of work experience in the relevant field or a degree in Zoology, Nature Conservation, Game Ranch Management, Animal Health or equivalent qualification at NQF 7 with 2 years of work experience in the relevant field. Postgraduate qualification in Zoology, Nature Conservation, Game Ranch Management, Animal Health or equivalent qualification with NQF 8 will be an added advantage.
 
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: excellent swimming skills and be willing to be trained as a commercial diver and possession of a commercial dive license will be advantageous; strong passion for animals and knowledge of captive animal husbandry; ability to do physical labour and work outdoors in inclement weather; extensive knowledge of legislation, policies, procedures, processes, practices, systems, and frameworks related to day-to-day care of animals; advanced planning, organizing, and problem solving skills; excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; ability to work with diverse team and under pressure whilst being cost, quality, and safety conscious; be in a possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel.
 
Key Performance Responsibilities include:
  • Perform and oversee general animal care & feeding;
  • Attend to animal breeding, animal capture, and animal displays;
  • Ensure environmental enrichment and animal conditioning training is conducted;
  • Maintain tools and equipment;
  • Attend to enclosure maintenance and pest control; and
  • Attend to conservation administration, HR responsibilities, and stakeholder relations.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: SANBI LIBRARIES

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated person to develop, manage, and implement business plans, strategies, policies, and procedures for the SANBI Libraries, to analyse, develop, and manage the use of appropriate new technologies to deliver information in a changing digital environment, to develop and manage all services and co-operate with key stakeholders to ensure for the delivery of appropriate and effective information services.
 
This position requires a degree in Information Sciences, Archives and Records Management or equivalent qualification at NQF 7. A postgraduate qualification in Information Sciences, Archives and Records Management or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 6 years of work experience in the relevant field, 3 of which should be in supervisory position.
 
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: in-depth understanding of research libraries; knowledge about legislation pertaining to libraries; knowledge on the management of library systems; project management knowledge and skills; ability to conduct reference interviews and analysing the information needs; excellent communication skills and outstanding customer service ethics; knowledge of human resources, procurement, and financial management policies, a good working knowledge of libraries metadata standards; and a high level of computer literacy with sound knowledge of library databases.
 
Key Performance Responsibilities include:
  • Provide input towards strategy development and implementation;
  • Manage library services and provision of information and training;
  • Manage, supervise and lead team member;

SENIOR ACCOUNTING CLERK: CREDITORS AND CASH MANAGEMENT

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for self-motivated individual to ensure that creditors are paid within SANBI policies and procedures, clear queries from creditors and ensure correctness of accounts payable ledger.
 
This position requires a Grade 12 with job specific qualification, or equivalent qualification at NQF 4 with 5 years of work experience in the relevant, or a national diploma, or advanced certificate in Financial Accounting or equivalent qualification at NQF 6 with 3 years of work experience in the relevant field. An advanced diploma or a degree in Financial Accounting or equivalent qualification at NQF 7 will be an added advantage.
 
The following competencies are required for the candidates to be successful in this position; Knowledge of Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations, Generally Recognised Accounting Practice; Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; Financial report writing; customer service skills; and Sage 300/ACCPAC.
 
Key Performance Responsibilities include:
  • Capture of financial transactions, including upload of payments to online banking system;
  • Process general ledger transactions and reconciliations;
  • Assist with financial risk management; and
  • Follow up on supplier and customer queries and resolve them timeously.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR: REGIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAMME

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to effectively manage and coordinate SANBI’s natural infrastructure programme across various SANBI Campuses. This position requires a degree in Engineering (Civil or Structural) or equivalent qualification at NQF 7. A postgraduate qualification in Engineering (Civil or Structural) or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 8 years of work experience in the relevant field, 4 years of which should be in first line management position(s). The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: valid registration as a Professional Construction Project Manager with the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP); professionally registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA); knowledge of the PFMA; knowledge of National Treasury’s Infrastructure Development Management System (IDMS); knowledge of infrastructure procurement and associated processes; experience in construction project management of similar scaled projects; experience in labour-intensive construction and managing expanded public works programmes; excellent knowledge and understanding of building materials/tools available in the built environment sector; an understanding of the relevant regulatory processes applicable to the Built Environment sector; a high level of project and financial management experience and expertise; excellent analytical, conceptual abilities, and report writing skills; excellent communication skills (both verbal and written); computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook) will be an advantage. ENVIRONMENTAL INTERPRETATION OFFICER

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to manage, maintain, develop & implement interpretation, with emphasis on horticulture, botany, conservation and the natural environment, history, and education. The position requires the research, development and implementation of ways & means of communicating the themes and focus of the Kwa-Zulu Natal Botanical Garden, Institute and various themed gardens within the Garden to the public in a creative, educational, engaging and stimulating way that will enhance the visitor’s experience and reflect positively on the KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical Garden This position requires a National Diploma in Nature Conservation, Horticulture, Natural Science, Botany or Equivalent qualification at NQF 6. A Degree or Equivalent qualification at NQF 7 will be an added advantage. This position requires 4 years’ working experience in the relevant field when having a National Diploma Or 2 years working experience in the relevant field when having an Advanced Diploma or Degree or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: Possess knowledge of ecology, nature conservation, nature conservation, natural biodiversity, ecology, indigenous plants and animals as well as current environmental management practices; proficient in spoken and written English and/or other indigenous languages.; Good communication and presentation skills and excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook) proficient in design programmes e.g. CorelDraw will be advantageous.
