Cochrane South Africa (CSA) is an intramural unit at the SAMRC. Its mission is to prepare and maintain Cochrane reviews of the effects of health care interventions, and to promote access to, and the use of best evidence in healthcare decision-making within South Africa and the region. The post holder will assist with and form an integral part of the SAMRC’s transformation agenda.
The Cochrane Collaboration (http://www.cochrane.org/) is a global, independent network of researchers, health professionals, patients, and others who work together to ensure that healthcare decisions are informed by the best available evidence.
The Unit Director position calls for a senior researcher with international standing, proven leadership skills and the ability to enhance and maintain a centre of excellence that facilitates the generation and dissemination of Cochrane systematic reviews, methodological research and primary research to enhance evidence-informed healthcare and policy. Applicants should possess the following knowledge, skills and experience:
  • Considerable experience and understanding in the conduct of Cochrane reviews or equivalent systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
  • Experience in health-related research at a senior level, with international standing
  • Extensive experience in the management of projects, staff and budgets, including the development of a multi-year programme of work.
  • Sound knowledge of the health system and disease burden of South Africa and the African region
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and a passionate champion of ‘evidence-based medicine/practice’.
  • Extensive experience or knowledge of the working of The Cochrane Collaboration, within South Africa and/or internationally.
  • Experience in training others in these methods.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, and to provide leadership.
  • Ability to work with people from a range of backgrounds, including healthcare and methodological specialists.
  • Advance transformation by mentoring and building capacity in accordance with the SAMRC’s Employment Equity Plan
  • Develop, implement and monitor progress of the Transformation Strategy of the Unit.
 
The post requires that the jobholder have a medical degree with specialist qualifications or a doctoral degree preferably in the health sciences, with a sound knowledge of epidemiology and/ biostatistics and a minimum of 10 years of experience in the field of health research. Experience in knowledge translation would be advantageous. The post holder should have a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel nationally, and internationally.

The Environment and Health Research Unit (E&HRU) is an intramural unit at the SAMRC. The SAMRC’s Environment & Health Research Unit (E&HRU) conducts population-based research on environmental risks to health – with particular emphasis on those living in poverty. The E&HRU – which is made up of experts in environmental epidemiology, public health, chemistry, geography, botany, environmental management and science communication - protects and promotes the health of South African communities by investigating environmental health risks and informing policy.
The post holder will assist with and form an integral part of the SAMRC’s transformation agenda.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Lead and manage all aspects of the Research Unit in line with SAMRC objectives.
• To build networks locally, nationally and globally to support the dissemination of research and maximise impact on health and health/health service policy and practice.
• Development of strategic plan for the Unit.
• Apply governance principles throughout the research unit.
• Advance transformation by mentoring and building capacity in accordance with the SAMRC’s Employment Equity Plan
• Develop, implement and monitor progress of the Transformation Strategy of the Unit.
• Write and secure grants and contracts to undertake research prioritised for the Unit.
• Stakeholder Management and scientific research.
 
KEY REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:
• A PhD in Environmental Epidemiology, Public Health, or other related field or a Medical Speciality
• At least 10 years’ experience in research, of which 3 years must be in a leadership and management capacity within the Epidemiology, or Public Health environment.
• At least 5 years management experience at a senior management level
• NRF A or B rating or evidence of international recognition in a focal area within Environment and Health research.
• A track record of research, grants, publications – national and international (at least 50 lifetime publications (ISI journal articles, editorials or book chapters)).
• Written successful research grant applications for international and national donors to support a research Programme.
• Extensive experience in the management of projects, including the development of a multi-year programme of work
• A track record of working effectively with the National DOH, Provincial Departments, other relevant government departments, international partners, funders and other stakeholders to include health sector policy and services, understand national and regional environment and health research priorities and disseminate research evidence
• Evidence of research translation efforts and international leadership in the field Stakeholder engagement
• Leadership skills in mentoring and managing a research unit.
• Presented research findings to international and national conference audiences, including as an invited keynote speaker.
• Led a programme of research (at any time having multiple conceptually linked projects)
• Strong interest in capacity strengthening at the national and regional level
• A track record of capacity building of emerging scientists through graduating Masters and PhD students and training staff in relevant research methods; track record of contributing to transformation initiatives.

The SAMRC - Grants, Innovation and Product Development (GIPD) Division of the SAMRC seeks to appoint a Project Manager: Grants to manage a portfolio of sub-awards and sub-contracts in line with approved timelines, milestones and budgets for a USAID funded BRILLIANT consortium programme reporting the Executive Director. The post holder will also assist with and form an integral part of the SAMRC’s transformation agenda.
The BRILLIANT Consortium’s programme of research will focus on utilising the existing capacity, scientific talent, ingenuity and investments made in community engagement to advance the HIV vaccine field in sub-Saharan Africa through supporting activities in the following five interrelated areas:
  • Partner with civil society advocates, affected communities including those affected by and people living with HIV/AIDS, policymakers, and communicators to advance sub-Saharan African-led HIV vaccine science
  • Design and implement early-stage clinical trials of HIV vaccine immunogens,
  • Conduct laboratory analyses on samples from trials and epidemiological studies,
  • Test innovative preclinical HIV vaccine concepts, advancing the most promising candidates toward clinical trials,
  • Strengthen systems of collaborations for HIV vaccine research in SSA and increase opportunities to advance the careers of promising sub-Saharan African scientists.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Management of the portfolio of sub-awards and sub-contracts to ensure conduct and delivery of the activities in line with approved timelines, milestones and budgets. This includes:
  • overseeing contracting.
  • monitoring compliance with grant conditions
  • liaising with PIs and host institutions
  • arranging and attending regular meetings with sub-awardees
  • managing financial reporting and disbursements
  • project monitoring and support – review technical and financial reports and make recommendations to management.
  • reporting to management on grant progress and status
  • raising and facilitating resolution of matters regarding sub-awardee activities and budgets

The SAMRC - Grants, Innovation and Product Development (GIPD) Division of the SAMRC seeks to appoint a Project Manager: Grants to manage a portfolio of grants in line with approved timelines, milestones and budgets for a joint SAMRC-MRC UKRI programme, reporting to a Program Manager. The joint SAMRC-MRC UKRI programme will involve running one or more requests for applications, managing all pre- and post-award processes, and managing a portfolio of grants.
 
Responsibilities:
Facilitation of RFAs under the supervision and sign-off of a Program manager, including:
• liaising with internal and external stakeholders to draft and publicize RFA.
• fielding queries from PIs and institutions
• facilitating the peer review and selection processes, including coordinating panel meetings
• preparing EMC submissions for award approvals.
• providing feedback to applicants, including project initiation letters
• facilitating drafting and signing of funding agreements
• contributing to reports to management and funders on the program
 
Programme coordination and administration
• facilitate partner agreements and administer program budget.
• coordinate sourcing of program outputs (e.g., reports, publications, and students)

Senior Program Manager
Duration: 3 years
The Strategic Research Initiatives Unit of the SAMRC seeks to appoint a Senior Program Manager who will report to the Deputy Director, Administration and will be responsible and accountable for the overall management and implementation of the BRILLIANT consortium program. The incumbent will work alongside the BRILLIANT consortium Deputy Director, Administration on financial planning and resource allocation and with the Program Director on strategic partnerships and external engagements. The post holder will also assist with and form an integral part of the SAMRC’s transformation agenda.

• Oversight and coordination of all program activities, deliverables and reporting

• Manage periodic reviews of program activities.
• Broad stakeholder engagement with other relevant stakeholders in the HIV vaccine field and dissemination, including:

Senior Project Coordinator

  • Monitor grant timelines, deliverables and Coordinate reporting to USAID (progress reports, interim reports, and final reports as required by USAID)
  • Generate reports and metrics on program activities, financials, and outcomes for program management and stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records and documentation for the program and facilitate access to information for all consortium members.
  • Establish grant accounts, budgets, and financial reporting structures within the SAMRC and monitor program administration budgets.
  • Manage procurement on the program by SAMRC, including the execution of contracts in line with SAMRC and USAID policies.
  • Track and document program expenses and ensuring appropriate utilization of funds.
  • Serve as a central point of contact for the program and manage coordinated communication with all partners, including drafting of letters (for sign off by the Program Director or Deputy Director, Administration).
  • Contribute to the preparation of stakeholder communication materials (e.g. website material, presentations, reports, marketing materials, press releases, program pamphlets, etc.)
  • Arrange and coordinate internal and external consortium, partner working group and governance committee meetings and workshops, including:
    • Travel arrangements (including visa application letters)
    • S&T claims
    • Support with agenda preparation
    • Drafting minutes and actions
    • Monitoring action items
 
Core Requirements:
  • 3-year relevant tertiary qualification in a science or biomedical discipline or similar qualification or higher
  • At least 2-3 years of relevant experience coordinating/ managing projects (i.e. proven project management skills)
  • Proven experience administering funding, stakeholder communication and coordinating meetings.
 
Advantageous:
  • Demonstrated experience working in a public fund/grant administration environment or similar, managing or coordinating project/grant portfolios.
  • Preferably demonstrated experience in working across academia, government departments, industry, and philanthropy
  • A working knowledge of / background in health research

Duration: 5-year Full-time contract
The South African MRC NCDRU’s program on ‘cancer epidemiology and prevention’ is a new research program on priority cancers, as well as their environmental, dietary, lifestyle and genetic determinants in South African and sub-Saharan African region. The program is located organizationally under the auspices of the Office of the Director. NCDRU is looking for a seasoned scientist to develop and maintain its cancer epidemiology and prevention research program. This is a 5-year full-time contract post which is available immediately, based in Cape Town. The post holder must actively contribute to the SAMRC’s transformation agenda.
 
Responsibilities will include:
1. Leading the development and maintenance of an integrated program of research to improve the understanding, prevention, detection and control of priority cancers and their determinants.
2. Identifying funding opportunities and lead grant proposals writing to attract funding to support the research portfolio of the program.
3. Developing and maintaining a network of collaboration in research on cancer epidemiology and prevention in South Africa and Africa
4. Establishing and maintaining links with stakeholders both national and internationally, to create new opportunities and maximize the reach and impact of the research of the program.
5. Leading scientific knowledge generation in the form of original and other forms of scientific articles on issues relating to cancer epidemiology and prevention.
6. Presentation and national and regional conferences
7. Developing the next generation of experts in research on cancer epidemiology and prevention.
8. Advance capacity development and transformation in the unit by mentoring and supervising junior colleagues as needed.
 
Candidate must meet the following requirements:
• PhD in epidemiology/public health and/or clinical qualification with practical experience on cancer epidemiology and prevention. PhD in biomedical sciences with research focus on cancer will also be considered.
• A least 5 years (8 years for Senior Specialist Scientist) research experience in a research institution or a university, ideally in the area of cancer epidemiology and prevention in the South African and African context
• Good communication and organisational skills
• Experience in managing people and multiple projects as principal and/or co-principal investigator.
• Ability to multi-task and work under pressure
• Ability to lead scientific writing, demonstrated through involvement in scientific papers as first or senior author.
• Experience in grant writing as PI (co-PI for SS) and successfully attracting funding for research.
• Experience in mentoring Masters and PhD students to completion as primary or co-supervisor
• Advanced knowledge of at least one of the following statistical packages: R, SPSS, SAS or STATA
• Experience in mentoring and building capacity in the discipline; contributing to transformation initiatives.

The Biostatistics Research Unit of the SAMRC is an active research entity that collaborates with health and medical researchers from the SAMRC, universities, other research institutions and international agencies. Statisticians in the Biostatistics Research Unit provide statistical support on design, analysis and reporting, to collaborative national and international projects in the SAMRC research portfolio. These range from surveys, epidemiological studies to randomised controlled and clinical trials.
Statistical methodological development as well as the training and supervision of researchers and junior staff, is also undertaken. The Biostatistics Research Unit offers a challenging biostatistics career in health and clinical research within a dynamic environment. The Unit has a number of methodological research programs such as longitudinal data analysis, and spatial data analysis. The successful candidate will have an individual research portfolio and contribute to these programs.
 
Responsibilities:
• Evidence of strong academic background and peer-reviewed ISI publication record in Biostatistics or book chapters
• The ability to undertake projects in Biostatistical methodology and applied Biostatistical research project; or being a co-investigator or study statistician in health-related project.
• Ability to communicate statistical concepts and information to non-statisticians in health and clinical sciences.
• Write-up study design, sample size and analysis plan of proposals including data management, analysis, and interpretation of results.
• Poster or oral presentations at local or international conferences or at external meetings where own research is presented by the statistician.
• Statistical support of master’s or PhD students.
• Assist in organising academic days, journal clubs, etc.

The post holder will assist with and form an integral part of the SAMRC’s transformation agenda. Responsibilities:
• Publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals.

JUNIOR SCIENTIST
Duration: 18-months Contract
The SAMRC’s HIV and other Infectious Diseases Research Unit requires a suitably qualified and experienced Junior Scientist. The Junior Scientist is required to assist with coordinating a qualitative research study focused on maternal and child health in KwaZulu-Natal at the RK Khan clinical trial site. The Junior Scientist will be involved in qualitative sampling and participant recruitment and enrolment, schedule interview appointments with the participants, organize study logistics for data collection activities and conduct in-depth interviews. The incumbent will conduct focus group discussions and assist with interview summaries, analysis and report writing and provide presentations and co-authoring conference abstracts and study publications.
 
Responsibilities:
