The incumbent in this role plays a pivotal part in the comprehensive management of property, plant, and equipment at the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC). Responsibilities include the seamless integration of new assets into the JD Edwards (JDE) system, implementation of efficient barcoding procedures for accurate asset tracking, and rigorous verification processes to maintain a reliable asset register. Additionally, the role involves identifying obsolete and damaged assets, initiating write-off submissions to the asset committee, and overseeing the disposal of assets on the JDE system. The incumbent is also responsible for the meticulous management of vehicle log sheets, ensuring compliance with organizational policies, and handling the processing of stores journals, along with ad-hoc journals such as year-end accruals. This multifaceted position requires a keen attention to detail, proficiency in asset management practices, and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams to uphold the highest standards of accuracy and compliance within the SAMRC.

Core Requirements:
• 3-year National Diploma in Accounting or higher.
• 5 - 10 experience with asset management
• Experience with processing financial journals
• Advanced experience in MS Excel, proficiency in MS Word and Qlikview
• Must have worked on a Financial System
• General office administration experience
• Knowledge and experience of Public Finance Management Act and Supply Chain Management
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Drivers license.

The SAMRC’s, IT Services Division, has a vacancy for a self-driven and results oriented individual to fill the above position. The incumbent will be expected to assist in the development and maintenance of software applications. The software applications will include but not limited to ASP.NET C#, Reporting services and other Microsoft development tools. The incumbent may also be required to assist with the administration of SQL servers. In addition, they will be required to solve software problems on a variety of platforms and assist users with their queries.
 
Core Requirements:
• 3-year National Diploma/Degree in Information Technology or other relevant qualification
• Microsoft Certifications: MCSD or Current Microsoft Developer Certifications
• 5+ years’ experience using C# and MS SQL Server technologies
• A valid driver’s license

SENIOR SCIENTIST (S)
Duration: Permanent position
 
The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is seeking to appoint a Senior Scientist (S) in its Burden of Disease Research Unit (BODRU). BODRU collects and analyses data on South Africa’s health status to estimate and monitor the burden of disease (the impact of health problems) and factors associated with the health of the population. The Unit provides information on the trends in the country’s health status as well as causes of disease and death for future planning to improve the health of the nation. It has developed exceptional expertise in summary health measures, health surveys, and mortality data and health informatics analysis.
The successful candidate is expected to lead on methods, advanced statistical analysis, interpretation and reporting of data from nationally representative survey datasets on the prevalence of multimorbidity (incl. communicable, non-communicable and injuries), and be proficient in conducting systematic reviews on the topics. The candidate will be required to enhance the unit’s research, by contributing to funding proposals towards multi-morbidity/multiple long-term conditions, within a multi-disciplinary team. Presentation of findings at national or international conferences will be required.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Provide expertise in study design towards research on multi-morbidity/multiple long-term conditions.
  • Lead advanced statistical analysis, management and interpretation of data from large datasets.
  • Conduct systematic reviews of scientific literature.
  • Lead and/or contribute to papers for publication in national and international peer-reviewed journals
  • Disseminate research findings through national and international conference presentations
  • Contribute to and lead protocol development to generate income for research on multimorbidity/ multiple long-term conditions.
  • Manage research projects including human resource and financial management.
 
Core Requirements:
  • A Master’s degree in Public Health, or similar qualification or higher
  • At least 10 years’ experience working in a health research environment (post Master’s degree)
  • Experience in injury epidemiology, multimorbidity, burden of disease and/or related research methods
  • PI on a proposal or managing research, staff and budgets
  • Evidence of having conducted statistical analysis (using STATA or other quantitative data analysis packages) on large projects
  • At least 1 first author publication in an ISI accredited journal
  • At least 1 oral/poster presentation of findings at an international conference, in addition to minimum experience
  • Experience in nationally representative survey datasets
  • Registered for PhD with substantial progress made
Advantageous:
  • A PhD in Public Health or similar, with at least 1 years’ experience post-PhD
  • Advanced statistical analysis skills
  • 5 or more first author publications in an ISI accredited journal
