The SAMRC Facilities Management Division requires a skilled and experienced Facilities Supervisor who will be responsible for creating a healthy, secure, productive and safe working environment for the SAMRC staff and visitors.  
 
Responsibilities:
  • The Facilities Supervisor will ensure compliance with all SAMRC Policies, Procedures, OHS Act, Building and Construction Regulations, Municipal by-laws, PFMA and Treasury Regulations
  • The Facilities Supervisor will be responsible for building housekeeping
  • Assist with mechanical maintenance
  • The Supervisor will do the general maintenance electrical maintenance, plumbing maintenance and structural maintenance
  • Fleet management, tenant management and client wellbeing
  • Management of contracted service providers, maintenance team and soft services staff.

Location: Cape Town
Remuneration: R 505 716 per annum (cost-to-company)
 
Job Requirements
  • Matric or Equivalent
  • Higher Certificate in Facilities Management (NQF5)
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ facilities management experience
  • Technical experience – Mechanical, HVAC, Electrical, Structural
 
Advantageous
  • Diploma in Facilities Management
  • Technical - Certified Tradesman or 5 years Tradesman Experience
  • Previous experience in a medical research environment with specific experience in a laboratory environment
  • Knowledge of PFMA and Treasury Regulations

The primary purpose of this position is to provide skilled technical support to the Platform, ensuring the efficient day-to-day functioning of the laboratories and assisting with ongoing research activities as directed by the line manager.
 
Job Description
The primary purpose of this position is to provide skilled technical support to the Platform, ensuring the efficient day-to-day functioning of the laboratories and assisting with ongoing research activities as directed by the line manager. Responsibilities include maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment, cleaning and autoclaving glassware, accurate record-keeping, and the proper storage of chemicals and biological materials. In addition, the successful candidate will provide technical support for a range of research procedures such as immunohistochemistry (IHC) , tissue sectioning, and DNA and RNA extractions from biological samples, as well as assisting with animal experiments and the collection of wastewater samples.
 
Responsibilities:
  • General laboratory maintenance and support to staff and students, including IHC laboratory stock inventory,  record keeping, and preparation of basic solutions for the laboratory
  • Wash and autoclave laboratory glassware and consumables.
  • Manage biohazardous and chemical waste removal from laboratories and for collection by waste companies in compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Managing the chemical store and supply to the laboratory when required
  • Monitoring and maintaining CO2 and Liquid nitrogen tanks for the laboratory
  • Assist researchers and postgraduate students in obtaining liquid nitrogen and dry ice
  • Maintain laboratory stock, monitor reagents, and assist with inventory reports and quarterly stocktakes.
  • Perform routine laboratory procedures, including tissue embedding, sectioning of FFPE and cryo blocks, and IHC staining, following established protocols.
  • Assist with DNA/RNA isolation from biological samples under supervision.
  • Support staff and students in experimental animal studies
  • Collect, transport, and log laboratory and wastewater samples
  • Record and compile quality control data and routine laboratory reports.
  • Assist the laboratory manager with SOP compliance and quarterly health and safety inspections.

Remuneration: R 369 669 per annum (cost-to-company)
 
Job Requirements
Core Requirements:
  • BSc or BTech in Molecular Biology, Biomedical Science  or similar qualification
  • 1 -2 years’ hands-on experience in IHC staining
  • 1-2 years’ hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques, including RNA and DNA isolation
  • Familiar with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
  • Maintaining experimental records (lab book) and working with protocols and SOP’s
  • Understanding of quality control within a laboratory setting
  • Valid Code B driver’s licence and ability to travel for sample collection and site activities.
 
Advantageous:
  • BSc (Hons) in Molecular Biology or related field
  • Hands-on experience in immunohistochemistry (IHC) analysis.
  •  Hands-on experience in sample management and handling of biological specimens
  •  Knowledge of laboratory maintenance, including cleaning and autoclaving of glassware, and adherence to occupational health and safety protocols
  •  Experience in handling chemicals, biohazardous materials, and biological specimens.
  •  Experience of working in a GLP or SANAS-accredited laboratory or similar environment

A position has become available for a Senior Scientist (C) (Paterson D3) in the Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform (BRIP). The Platform focuses on health research and innovation, particularly the early detection, prevention, and treatment of non-communicable diseases.
 
Job Description: 
The job holder will be responsible for advancing research on the interplay between diabetes, cancer, hypertension, and cardiometabolic risk by conducting studies aligned with approved projects within the BRIP Platform and in collaboration with national and international stakeholders. They will be expected to conduct, present and publish research findings in line with BRIP’s strategic priorities, secure external research funding, and supervise, co-supervise, and train postgraduate students and staff in relevant skills. In addition, the job holder will contribute to BRIP activities, management, and citizenship to ensure the Platform functions optimally and delivers high-quality research, while adhering to SAMRC policies and procedures. 
 
Responsibilities:
  • Conduct laboratory tissue culture, molecular experiments and manage animal experiments.
  • Publish articles in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Apply for research funding from national and international stakeholders.
  • To supervise/co-supervise postgraduate students (MSc and PhD).
  • Principal investigator (PI) and Co-PI on research projects.
  • Review for international peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Review research grants and abstracts for conferences.
  • Give special (invited) talks at national/ international conferences or seminars.
  • Oral presentations.
  • Effectively manage, train and develop students and staff.
  • Assist with the management of the BRIP Platform and involvement in SAMRC administrative/community engagement processes.

Job Requirements
Core Requirements:
  • Master’s degree in molecular biology, Human Genetics, or a related field and registered for a PhD
  • At least 5 years of hands-on research experience in tissue culture, IHC, flow cytometry, mitochondrial bioenergetics and echocardiograph analysis workflow
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience with qRT-PCR, Western Blot, ELISA and related molecular biological workflow.
  • 1 year of experience in basic Cheminformatics
  • At least 5 years of experience in animal experimental design
  • A track record in publishing 5 lifetime publications, with 3 as first author (ISI journal articles)
  • Track record of leading research projects in the last 5 years
  • Proven skills in data and statistical analysis
  • Ability to independently plan experimental workflows for multiple experiments
  • Track record of supervising Honors and MSc students
  • Experience with Oral presentations at local and international conferences
  • Experience in reviewing research papers and/or national grants
  • At least five years of experience in project management and data management
 
Advantageous: 
  • PhD in Biochemistry, Physiology or related field
  • Experience with Good Clinical/Laboratory Practices.
  • A track record of supervising Honors/MSc/PhD students
  • A track record in the initiation and management of several research projects.

The former includes running RFAs, coordinating the program budgets, portfolio development, and reporting under the supervision of a Program Manager, and liaison with strategic partners generally independently but under the overall supervision of a Program Manager. The incumbent will report to a Senior Program Manager (Precision Medicine).

Job Requirements
Requirements
  • 4-year tertiary qualification or 3-year degree with Honours, preferably in the specific science disciplines of genetics, bioinformatics, data science and/or molecular biology.
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience coordinating/ managing multi-stakeholder projects preferably within an Omics workflow and research environment and preferably with experience in data and grant/project management.
Advantageous:
  • MSc Genetics, Bioinformatics, Data Science and/or Molecular Biology with relevant knowledge obtained in the field
  • Experience in a public funding research environment and/or industry, preferably managing Omics projects and/or workflows
  • Demonstrated experience managing grants for a funder or at a research organization as a project manager of multiple grants with reporting to different funders
