The Centre for Tuberculosis Research (CTR) is an intramural SAMRC Centre partnered with Stellenbosch University and is focused on Tuberculosis research, with an emphasis on the South African situation. The CTR aims to improve the health status and quality of life of the population through the generation of new knowledge and apply that to health oriented research aimed at reducing incidence and prevalence by diagnosing and treating appropriately and by measures aimed at prevention.
A position for a Specialist level scientist is currently available for appointment at the CTR based at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
We are looking for a dynamic, established researcher to enhance the CTR’s research in tuberculosis (TB). The candidate will take part in and lead independent research that will result in the production of multiple, internationally recognised scientific outputs, the supervision of post graduate students and the generation of income (through grants, contracts). The candidate will assist in the scientific leadership of the CTR.
The position will be on SAMRC conditions of service. The SAMRC offers a competitive total remuneration package, inclusive of attractive fringe benefits and a stimulating work environment. Core Requirements:
- PhD degree in Microbiology or Biochemistry or Molecular Biology or Mycobacteriology or of Genetics or Bioinformatics or Immunology in the field of infectious diseases is required.
- A track record in undertaking and initiating original research and in publishing in accredited journals.
- Experience in the mentorship of post-graduate students (Level: BSc Hons, MSc and PhD).
- Record of successful international and national grant application record.
Desired Attributes:
- Experience in team and co-operative research, and building national and international collaborations.
- Experience in the field of Tuberculosis.
- Experience in working under BSL-3 conditions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- NRF rating, alternatively qualify for NRF rating.
Key responsibility Areas Duties:
- Develop, lead and manage new research directions with particular emphasis on translational and innovation in the field of Tuberculosis.
- Publish in internationally peer reviewed scientific journals.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences.
- Comply with all regulatory ethical requirements of the SAMRC, Stellenbosch University and the National Department of Health.
- Mentor postgraduate students at the level of BSc Hons, MSc, PhD and Post-Doctoral Fellows.
- Develop National and International collaborations.
- Apply for research and travel funding both nationally and internationally.
- Manage grant funds.
- Participate in a Strategic Task Team within the CTR.
- Assist the unit director with the management of the CTR.
- Commencement of duty: There is an urgent need to appoint a qualified candidate to commence duty as soon as possible.
A salary in the region of R1 035 623 per annum, cost-to-company will be negotiated in consideration of experience and qualifications.
