SENIOR SCIENTIST
One – Year Contract
Unit/Directorate: SAMRC- Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform (BRIP) in collaboration with Environment and Health Research Unit (E&HRU)
Region : Cape Town Office

The South African Medical Research Councils Biomedical Research Innovation Platform in collaboration with the Environment and Health Research Unit (EHRU) requires a suitably qualified and experienced Senior Scientist.
To cover the multifaceted aspects of the post, we require an energetic person with a strong theoretical and practical background in molecular biology.

Responsibilities:
- Play an active role in wastewater-based epidemiology research at the Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform.
- Performing DNA/RNA extractions from wastewater for quantitative RT-PCR analysis and genomic sequencing of pathogens.
- Contributing towards science outcomes (publications, research proposals and writing grants/sourcing for funding), planning, tracking, implementing, managing scientific initiatives, and coordinating projects.
Core Requirements:
- MSc degree in Genetics/Biochemistry or related sciences with suitable molecular biology training.
- 5 years post-MSc working experience of genotyping techniques (RNA extraction, primer design, qRT-PCR , Massarray genotyping, ability to work with large genetic data sets and perform statistics).
- Ability to work as a team member and plan own research.
- Sound communication with at least five 1st authored publications in the related field.
- Experience in Project Management across multiple project sites.
Advantageous:
- A relevant PhD.
- Experience with post-graduate teaching in molecular biology.
- Evidence of successful writing and obtaining of research grants.
- Experience in extraction and quantification of viral RNA from wastewater.
- Analysis, interpretation, quality assurance and troubleshooting of qRT-PCR results.
A salary in the region of R749 401 per annum, cost-to-company will be negotiated in consideration of experience and qualifications.
